Jeremy, I agree with all that you said in this comparison, but I think there is one more important point. Due to all the variability and added features (gaia phase, technologies, etc.), this game has even more for new players to learn than TM. Players familiar with TM can learn GP quickly, but for completely new players GP will take a good 45-60 minutes just to teach the game. TM took a fairly long time to teach, but GP will take even longer. If someone is starting from scratch and has access to both games, I would suggest learning TM first. Then GP is not a big step from there.
Definitely a harder game to teach if the players have not played TM in the past. I taught someone with no past experience and it took 15 minutes total.
lol, no this game definitely takes longer than 15 minutes to teach. That is a gross exaggeration if I have ever seen one. You can maybe say all the base rules in 15 minutes but have an actual base comprehension is a hard no. This is the type of game where your first play through {unless you have played the base TM} is going to be met with lots of "ahah" moments.
One question Jeremy...I love Eclipse, but my gf does not due to the confrontational strategy that the game encourages. She loves heavy games, however, where strategy and in-game planning are important. Like Vinhos, Le Havre, Tzolkin, Through the Ages. Do you think this game might work? (Terra Mystica seemed a bit dry to her).
It is "mostly" the same gameplay as Terra Mystica minus one additional step (Gaia) which allows you to Terraform unihabitable planets...allowing for greater flexibility. I love the game and don't find it dry at all, but I can definitely understand how some people might find it super mathy.
Yes she will love it! GP is an awesome game and 4 players mode is totally great. This is a real Euro that is way way better than Caverna, Toscany, Viticulture, and all that junk, including Terraforming Mars.
Bernardo Rippe I'd appreciate it if you'd refrain from talking with a derogatory tone about my Terraforming Mars. She doesn't appreciate your condescension and neither do I.
Totally off-topic but any chance for your review on Sidereal Confluence? We played it twice within our game group and have been aching for more. It's an amazing game and I think you guys would like it very much!
probably algorithm at this point, but I keep seeing these two and always want one or the other (not sure if I need both). This video is well done to explain the differences, and why you prefer GP. If/when I end up buying it'll probably be GP
One thing to consider is that more variability does not automatically mean more replayability. I have played both and I prefer TM over this one. Shorter teach and shorter playtime and for what it is worth I also found TM abit more involved between players. Especially the map play.
One thing I failed to mention......for now yes. I like the fantasy theme more than the space theme - that's just personal preference. Having said that, Gaia Project is a better game, so yes, I probably will get rid of Terra Mystica in the next year or so.
Zman really knocked it out of the park with components! (sarcasm) I see your boards curling also lol How does that qualify for excellence in production?
My wife and I have played this a few times now....totally agree. This game is phenomenal. Love the depth of play as well as the variability. Also, even though it's a little over produced with pieces for each faction's color - they could have stuck with 4 basic colors, but they chose to have 7 different colors....I love it totally worth it. Game play is tight and forces you to plan. It's also very non-confrontational. Awesome game. I see it over taking TM with ease.
The unique colors for each faction provide for usability to match the faction’s native planet. That doesn’t qualify as overproduction to me. Agree that it works great as a couple’s game.
There are 7 faction boards, so yes, it is possible to play with 5 people. You might run into some problems, though; e.g. there are only four tech tiles of each type so someone will miss each one, there will be more downtime between turns and longer play time, and the board might feel a little cramped. If those don't bother you, go for it!
How does this play as a 2 player game? I’ve enjoyed playing the Terra Mystica app but never bothered buying the board game as it doesn’t really work with 2 players.
Dean Lowdon Scales nicely. Less modular tiles and each end game scoring tile has a number on it, which represents a position on the scoring track where you place a neutral color token that represents an imaginary third player for scoring competition. No other changes. You can even reduce the number of tiles as a variant for any player count to increase competition.
Why do people talk about the research tracks like it's something new and amazing. It's already available in TM! Terraforming and range is on the faction boards. More income is on the favor tiles. And more knowledge income is basically priests. GP has less interaction and are more forgiving. And you can't learn the best strategies for the factions as the map always changing. It should pay of to play the same game over and over. So no thanks, i stick with TM.
Good comparison but the Gaia phase was explained incorrectly. No Gaia transformers are placed. That occurs during the action phase. During the Gaia phase the power tokens that were moved to the Gaia bowl are returned to power bowl 1 (or power bowl 2 for the Terrans) which has an overall impact on power planning, since it occurs after the power charge during the first phase.
I think terra pustica is the worst game I have ever played. Overrated is too mild a word. Luckily, I only lost $14 for the app. Unfortunately, you can’t resell apps.
your production values are through the roof.
Thank you Glen!

Wow, 15 minutes sounds like a very efficient teach for a game like this. Do you hire out? :)

@@smokeabca Teaching the rules doesn't take long. How to actually play well is another matter.
Great explanation. Thanks for your work. I'll try this game for sure! Bravo 🎉
Excellent comparison video. Clear and concise. Was never really drawn to Terra Mystica, but this has piqued my interest.
also the solo play is really great. You just want to play over and over again
Agreed! I've played it solo as well....it's fantastic that they added that option for gamers.
Thanks for the heads up. I plan on playing solo this week.
Can you play GP in a 5 player mode like TM?
Maybe with some adjustments?

ManVsMeeple ok, got it...thanks!
It’s about the same level of dryness as Vinhos.

I am ready! ...... as soon as Nusfjord releases, which is tied in with my Gaia Project order :X
I love Nusfjord as well....such a great, quick playing game!
Any word when Nusfjord is released here in the US? Waiting on Riverboat as well...

We still have yet to play it. #toomanygames
Very good - I’d love to see me ‘vs’ games :D

Have you tried Age of Innovation yet?
Are you getting rid of Terra Mystica? Or is it worth to keep both?

@@meeple I'll give you my address if you'd like to send it to me : )! I'll pay postage.
1 to 4 I am interested

+Icarus Must Burn Thanks, I'll keep a look out and buy it if I see it for a good price.
Love the video. Thanks
Thank you Keith! Wanted to make it short and to the point......though I could talk for a long while about it if I wanted ;)
That is a huge footprint.
Yep, it leaves a pretty large stamp on the table ;)
Okay, I'll buy it. Thanks.

at the end of the day i really do not like the visuals for gaia project over terra mystica. especially all the fiddly plastic pieces.

ROFL. To each his own.
