      Ya' know, I never saw all the hype in that dunk until now. I just turned 59. Been watching since Kareem was Lew Alcindor, but I never got the hype of that dunk. Yes, it is the greatest of all time. Hell, he gathers damn near at the 3-point arc. Then he swings it to keep it from Coop. Then he, in the flow of the game, "rocks" it back the other way. I never saw all the hype in Chick Hearn either, but to call that what it would come to be as it was happening?
      I have loved Doc's 1980 Finals scoop shot since I saw it as it happened on the tube. We were all floored when it happened. We had seen him get creative, but that scoop was beyond belieft. BUT, the Rock the Baby just might be better.

  • @alohawg

    There's a high degree of difficulty in the dunk by Julius Erving that he makes look so natural and easy. A right hander from the left side and cupping the ball against his arm so fluidly....the whole sequence was the most graceful poetry in motion dunk ever. The defender was nothing to the great Dr. J. I saw this live on tv, never forget it.

    The Doctor's dunk is my favorite basketball play of all time. NBA Finals. I had been watching him since I was a 10 year old in Norfolk and he played for the Squires. Seeing him steal the ball sprint down the court and rock that baby home in the Finals was the best ever.

      In 1972, when I was 11 years old, I went to see those same ABA Virginia Squires play the Kentucky Colonels at the Hampton Roads Colosseum. The ABA used to put on pregame theatrics back then. Julius Erving was the feature at this game. He performed some entertaining dunks and showed off his leaping ability. At the end of the exhibition, all of the kids were invited down to get autographs. I got his and Artis Gilmore's on the ticket stub. Sure wish that I had that ticket stub today.

For me personally, when I see something done effectively versus something done effectively plus beautifully, I'll take the beautiful version every time. Other players-like Bird, Jordan, or others-may have been better players overall, but he was certainly first echelon and good enough. With that level of skill, when I add on how beautiful and effortless his play was, he's the one I always wanted to play like when I was young.

    Love this list! Top 2 dunks in history are spot on. I think degree of difficulty is just much harder with Dr. J's dunk all due respect to Jordan's dunk. Jordan had an incredible move getting out of the corner of the 2 Knick's players. I mean I have literally never seen a move like that before and to elevate over Ewing was audacious! Michael's greatest dunk for sure.
    Doctor's dunk stands alone. There has never been a dunk like that before or since in NBA history. Nobody has even attempted a dunk like that and the fact that it was on a full sprint coming from the side and having to navigate against Michael Cooper - one of the top 2 or 3 defenders of all time - AND come up with a straight arm windmill power jam was EPIC!

    Even John Starks admits he didn't realize Jordan was there. That's how not in the play Jordan was and the media tried so hard to ensure "Jordan got posterized". The fact that Jordan runs from the key to attempt to be a factor in the play shows how far he actually was from getting posterized.

    • @asterisk911
      @asterisk911 5 лет назад +1

      You're right that he wasn't in the play. But he still got posterized, because the poster captures only a single snapshot moment in time, and Jordan IS in the poster (even though he wasn't in the play).

    All great dunks, but the most amazing thing is the Jordan dunk . He is trapped with a double team, does a quick spin move while facing the sideline, and has enough speed and hops to dunk on Ewing. Think about it..........all these other guys had a running lead up to the basket. Jordan was facing the wrong way when he attacked the rim. Probably the greatest individual play in basketball history. He beat three guys and the one at the rim is one of the best defensive centers ever.

      I agree with you. This was mano et Mano with 7 footer who jumped and was protecting the basket. Dr J's was beautiful, rocking the cradle, but it was a race to the basket and the defender was not in position to defend the dunk, so he was just avoiding contact. JORDAN dunked on the 2nd best DEFENSIVE Center in the league. I put Olajwon ahead of him. The dunk over 6'10" Horace Grant was impressive, but help defender JORDAN wasn't really dunked on. He was late. Starks dunk was great, but JORDAN'S was the best, with the Dr. at #2. I even like Tom Chambers dunk better than Starks because of the height he got on it. BUT he dunked on a point guard.
