      Parenting is just the word we use for “teaching beginners how to human”. You don’t do kids any favors by shielding them and keeping them on the bunny slopes of life. Your job is to get them ready to exist in the actual real world.
      Imagine that you live in a house with a swimming pool. Now you don’t want your children to drown, so you have two choices: build a big wall around the pool, maybe add barbed wire and a tarp, then spend every day of every year telling them that water is evil. Or just teach them how to swim.

      @@notcompletelynormalAgreed. And the same with kids fighting and socializing.
      While accidents do happen in a scuffle, when kids fight they are learning about how to moderate their use of strength - how much will discourage an attacker without causing serious damage. It's much better to learn while the kid has a strength of a kid, and not a full-grown man.
      For socializing, I'm certain that a fair bit of bullying is caused by the bully not even realizing they're bullies, because they've never realized that what they do/say hurts others. Because they don't see the person get hurt, thanks to social media. I'm obviously not talking about people who intentionally want to upset others, such as "classic" bullies and trolls.

      @purpl3loverz I also have a friend like this. Anytime I ever seen that baby eat it's never anything healthy. Ever. I lived with them for almost a year and I noticed the baby was very addicted to screen time. She would cry for it every single morning so she would get it. Well she was old enough to know how to talk but nobody ever worked with her so I started downloading learning games for her and delete the others & when I had the time I worked with her every chance I got. It's a shame that people like me who want a child so bad can't have one, but people who don't even enjoy their kid pops them out left and right.

I had one friend in particular whose mom would make her and her sister run around the block before they could eat a Twizzler. 😅 they would laugh it off and joke about it but she also would go over to everyone else’s house and LIVE for the snacks and treats that were available. If they aren’t getting it at home it’s not like they won’t be able to find it out in the world so better to teach good habits and a healthy relationship with all food groups etc than to totally deprive or restrict. ❤

    I agree. It annoys me when parents go 'you can't have sugar' or 'you can't stay on your devices the whole day' or 'you can't stay up late and you can't go on any devices after blah blah o'clock' because that's what I was told as a kid (my dad got angry when I stayed up past 10 when I was 11-12) and yet they would do this exact stuff. For instance my dad would say 'stop playing games on the computer' and then stay up till 12 or later that night playing games on his computer, contradicting himself on two of his own rules (he would also complain that no one else stacked the dishwasher or did the laundry and then redo that stuff when someone else did it because it wasn't exactly how he thought it should go. this makes my dad sound bad but he was really awesome)
    TLDR: parents annoy me when they contradict themselves on strict rules they set for you and then lie about not doing it, and also complain when no one does chores when they redo them anyway if they aren't done the way they think it should be.
    (edit - this is meant as a pointer to parents that do this because kids just copy adults and anyone older than them. If a parent does something, since they are their kid's role model, the kid will also do that and start to think it's normal. While kids do need to have rules set, if parents break them right away, then it'll be seen as a short - term punishment in the kids eyes. So parents can have more freedom but if they do stuff in front of their kid you can't expect the kid to not do it, because they look up to their parents and we are talking about very young kids here, so they don't get a lot of outside influence on what is normal. Sorry if I didn't make this clear enough (looking over it it isn't clear at all), but please stop coming at me if you read this.)

      @eggy1712 5 месяцев назад +9

      @Kwildcat13 Yes!!! Kids need to be told what they can and can't do, but if parents then go and do those exact things, then the kids will think it was just a short-term punishment, and start doing it again. Sorry if my point wasn't clear there

      @@RRC879parents and kids are not the same. With parents, they know when they are doing too much and can self regulate. With kids, they mostly don't know when to stop and can do too much to the detriment of their health. Children and parents cannot be held to the same standards in the sense of what you're saying. It's just like expecting kids to bring money home because the parents bring money home. It's not the same.

      @pinkskya3871 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@eggy1712 the rules are for the kids and don't necessarily apply to the parents because as a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that you make the best choices for your child and do not overindulge them or be overly strict with them. Parents can tell their kids to not stay up late but the parents themselves can stay up late because their lifestyles are not the same. They sometimes work late, sometimes, that night time is the only time they have to themselves in peace and quiet. And it's important that kids know they are not adults and so adults and kids should not be held to the same standards

    YES, my parents, if I was ever sick and had to miss something, would not let me have any sugar at all, have me go to bed at an outrageous time( as in 6:00 for 8-16y/o) and punish me more for having any screens on. They’re philosophy was that, even though I had no record of ever faking sick, I probably was. That led to little me feeling like I would be punished for being sick and grew a toxic relationship with taking a day off and has led now to me pushing myself past my limit. What you do as a parent matters, you could do anything from inspire a genius to ruin a life and possible end one. Always be fair with your kids.

    You’re an amazing mom Abby and I appreciate you forming a healthy relationship with food and other things for your children. My grandma and mom traumatized me growing up with food, working out and not allowed to have anything with sugar. When you grow up you tend to binge on them because it was restricted from you for so long. I have never loved my body also from their way of thinking. I was so skinny and thought I was fat because of this. You’re doing a great job balancing everything for them. ❤️❤️❤️

    Agree with the idea of moderation but I don’t knock parents who opt out of sugar either. I cut sugar completely out of my life for almost a year and felt healthier than ever… and during that time my kids also were off sugar and it really helped some health issues and behavior issues they had. I still gave them treats but they were made with fruit or maple syrup as the sweetener since they responded better to that. Now my kids eat sugar occasionally and so do I, but our time without it holds a lot of fond memories. (So, I guess I’m an example of an adult who ate zero sugar, which you inferred doesn’t exist.. haha)
    During that time I wished people would be more understanding of our choice because it was benefiting us so much and none of us felt deprived, but people didn’t get it. Ideally people would be understanding of having it in moderation AND of choosing not to have it, no judgement either way… but a lot of people like to judge others choices. I wish the mom shaming had never been a thing.
    You are a great mom and should trust your gut to do what feels right as their mom during each phase of life. You got this!

    • @anacpereira5
      @anacpereira5 5 месяцев назад +6

      If you ate fruit you ate sugar though - just not the "free sugar" from sweets and drinks. So she is technically correct xD

      Same, I haven’t touched refined sugars for 1 year (and 1 month ahaha). My autoimmune disease went into remission for most of it.

    • @aqueen13
      @aqueen13 5 месяцев назад +6

      @@anacpereira5 my point was there is no right or wrong with this, and there shouldn’t be judgement either way. I agree with her on moderation like she talks about but also loved my time avoiding sugar and neither decision should be judged by outsiders. I’m not attacking anyone, just adding some much needed nuance to the discussion, and pointing out that sugar free moms do exist.
      Also, definitions are important. To me sugar literally means processed/refined cane sugar and if you get technical is almost pure sucrose. There are a ton of other sweeteners with their own names too… and yes, fruit has fructose in it but that isn’t what sugar is and isn’t what I was talking about. I have found that for me fruit is easier on my body, probably because it’s paired with the fiber and vitamins in that fruit (which also make it a lower glycemic index food than straight cane sugar). I also handle maple syrup better, likely because it also has natural vitamins like manganese, riboflavin, and zinc paired in its structure and is also lower glycemic index than sugar. Processed cane sugar is not paired with vitamins or fiber so it’s a big hit to the blood sugar levels.
      Glucose is what most sweeteners, fructose, and carbs are converted to in the body and there is nothing wrong with having some glucose. In some studies women more easily balanced their hormones with some glucose in their bloodstream, this is one reason lower glycemic index foods are great. On the other hand, big spikes in blood sugar are known for causing quite a few issues. True moderation with sugar would likely mean that these spikes wouldn’t be consistent which reduces the risk behind the spikes substantially, but if there’s already certain health issues, avoiding those big spikes can help.
      I am not off refined sugar now, nor do I judge anyone who eats it, but I do appreciate how good it was for my physical health to avoid it for a while. Socially it was very difficult and I like having a balance in that way. Both can be true… she can be right and I can be right at the same time. Context is everything.

    That's what I consume, so I wouldn't change that for my kids. No sugar doesn't mean NO sugar. It means natural sugars. Fruits, dates, maybe coconut sugar, and even raw cain sugar are better options.

What I feel like is missing is when they had my younger brothers I felt left out they didn’t teach me how to communicate my feelings and now as a teenager I’m trying learn how to communicate my feelings in an healthy way. They also as soon as I got older just completely started ignoring me and spending more focus on my brother because he has higher needs than I do. My own mom constantly insults me and belittles me, every single day. Teaching moderation and not full abstinence is such a great way to build healthy boundries with your kids. I think a lot of people forget the world we live in now almost makes it necessary to understand screens and phones. I’ve found children with zero screen time tend to have a hard time completing homework or after school activity lessons and home practice if they have no idea how to use a computer or smart phone. And the absolute ban on sugar has been proven to cause adults to seek more than they need once they are “allowed” it. Great job mama!
