  • Well you asked for it so here it is, the reaction to the epilogue of Chernobyl. We loved the series and we didn't want you to miss out on any of our reactions so after the audience asked to see us react to this final part of the finale we figured why not. Hope you enjoy....

It's impressive how they chose actors who really resembled the actual people. The epilogue is really a perfect ending to the series; we even get a little bit of uplift, as some people survive and go on to live good lives.

Everyone was talking about the epilogue but I was watching it with them so I didn’t know about it and it was amazing. Thank you so much for reacting to the epilogue as well. I probably won’t have seen it if they didn’t put this out.

Thanks for posting this. It's one of the most enjoyable parts of the series. Especially the news about the 3 heroes. There was so much sacrifice and suffering through this series, it's nice to know something worked out better than expected for a change.

This show was phenomenal. All the factual information in the epilogue was great and essential. Good job, guys!

About the co-called "bridge of death"
That bridge exists, but none of those people stood there the night of disaster. People didn't even go outside that night.

Also apparently Dyatlov wasn't as big of an asshole as the show made him out to be. His colleagues feared him but also respected him.
At the end of the day the dude is still a victim of the regime lying.

Yeah, I love the show but dislike the way they portrayed him. According to the book “Midnight in Chernobyl”, to his death he fought to rectify the names of his colleagues, especially Akimov and Toptunov. He even sent Toptunov’s parents a letter that essentially said “It wasn’t your son’s fault. I’m sorry.”
Also, if I remember correctly, Dyatlov, along with other workers, spent a good portion of the night looking for the doomed Khodemchuk, unaware that he was entombed under the reactor itself.

@@samsungfridge1660 damn I didn't know all that. I did read someone saying that the HBO show essentially used the Soviet narrative about his character. Shame.

@@tiddlesthecat1141 I agree. Sure he was a hard man but he didn’t deserve to be portrayed like that :(

I was just going to say this. After the show, I hated him too, but then I found about an hour long interview he gave shortly before he passed away in which he gave his side of what happened. Completely changed my view of him. Yes he still was responsible to a point, but he was not a villain. And his spirit was crushed. You can easily tell how haunted he was by everything.

2011. We were allowed to stand beside and walk around that sculpture of the hands holding the reactor, but only for a limited time. Warned not to touch any vegetation or lie on the ground. Open-toed footwear was forbidden. Walking through Pripyat was a sobering experience. I asked our guide, who lived for six months in the town of Chernobyl (six months on, six off at a good distance away) what was the most interesting thing he had heard about the incident. He said that someone who had seen the ionized light rising from the destroyed reactor recalled that it was "all the colors of the rainbow". I didn't ask about the bridge story.
On a lighter note, the food in the complex cafeteria where we ate lunch was awful.

I was there in 2011 as well. I remember our guide telling us not to walk on the moss or we might end up leaving our shoes behind. I thought that going through the radiation detector to get into the cafeteria was a little ominous. I actually thought the food was pretty good but maybe that's just because I like borscht!

Thanks for the reaction to the epilogue and especially this whole, amazing show! It is hard to watch, but so incredibly well done and I feel like the whole time I watched it, I had to be like, "this really happened". Wanted to mention, the scene where the helicopter went down - it didn't go down because it went right over the reactor - it went down because it hit the cable hanging off the very nearby crane (which did really happen and there is YT video of the actual accident). However, of course, everyone in the heli would have been toast anyway. 💔 Heroes all - who worked on this disaster. 🙌🏽

If you're interested in seeing more of how the Soviet Union dealt with disaster, I heartily recommend the HBO movie Citizen X (1995), about the hunt for a prolific serial killer and the difficulties the investigators had with Soviet bureaucracy and the initial assertion that serial murder was purely a Western phenomenon. It stars Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland and their characters and relationship bear a marked resemblance to Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard here. It's another hard watch but it's so good.

Citizen X is a great movie and is also the reason why I knew the danger Legasov was in when led into that room with a drain on the floor.
