  • Today's Engineers With Markers question is, "What are the benefits of pumped two-phase cooling over single-phase cooling"?
The thermal management advantages of Pumped Two-Phase (P2P) cooling include:
    - Isothermality
    - Reduced Coolant Flow Rate
    - Electrical Isolation
In pumped two-phase cooling, the heat is taken by the evaporation of the coolant, so the temperature remains constant as it travels throughout your system. This means the device at the end of your system (or temperature cycle) is no hotter than the device at the beginning. In addition to that, with isothermality, you can control the temperature very well, because the temperature that you're boiling at is a function of pressure. This is achieved by adding a device that regulates the pressure without regard to what's happening in the rest of the loop. So the pressure would be held at that device, allowing your boiling temperature to remain constant and provide isothermality over time and space.
The next advantage is a reduced flow rate. Again, because you're boiling the fluid, its latent heat capacity is much higher than the heat capacity of other fluids. The required amount of heat is less as you're moving through the mass of coolant. That brings a lot of advantages, depending on the rest of the system architecture, your pumps can be smaller because you're moving less fluid, and it is possible to scale down your system beyond the capabilities of a single-phase system. And lastly, in some applications, this is an important one, is electrical isolation.
The coolants ACT typically use for pumped two-phase cooling are dielectrics, which means they're non-conductive. If you're using a water loop to cool your power electronics, your system will require a number of safety measures to ensure electricity does not compromise the entire system. By using dielectric fluids in an ACT pumped two-phase system, your system can operate at whatever voltage you require and still maintain electrical isolation, without the extra hardware. Also, if your system springs a leak, the fluid will evaporate and not throw water on your electronics.
