This template (and no Notion template ever) will give you access to the automation editor for free plans. What automation modules do however is let you build on top of pre-built databases with pre-built automations. That way, you won't need to use the automation editor in the first place.
I'm not looking for an editor at the moment, but I will at another time, so I'm glad you reached out. Do you have X? I'm more active on the business side there: x.com/gosdeeowl. I also can't just leave my email on the comments of RUclips, so this is the safest way 😆

Are you allowed to get a paid plan, make the changes then downgrade to free? do you lose the automations then?
Nope, you don't lose the automations. The automations made by a paid user is retained for free users.
It's not working
Hi! What isn't working? I just tested it out using a Free plan right now and the automation modules are working fine.
