I didn't care about the CGI, I only cared that the hero of my childhood showed up again. As far as I'm concerned, Luke hadn't been seen in Star Wars since 1983. And yes, I shed many a manly tear at this whole sequence.

To anyone disappointed that it wasn't Sebastian Stan, consider this...it was a CGI of young Mark Hamill's face, but it was Hamill himself saying the lines. Meaning that we got MARK HAMILL PLAYING LUKE SKYWALKER ONE MORE TIME.

    • @matthewtopping2061
      @matthewtopping2061 2 года назад +4

Yeah, but they should have just done an actual deepfake (a la Corridor Crew) where they trained a computer algorithm to emulate 80s Mark Hamill's face, instead of the weird, 2D monstrosity that we actually got. Four lines of dialogue and a stretchy, painted-on Luke Skywalker face with dead eyes is pretty shoddy for Disney, you have to admit.

Yes, right. And Luke's line, "Talent without training is nothing" make the sequel films not canon. I don't see any way they can still leave Rey's character as having never been trained and yet be as strong as she is. Somehow, either by adding scenes in a reedited Last Jedi or in some series having scenes where Luke trains Rey. And Leia can not be the one who trains her as it should be Luke because that is who everyone waited to see training her.

Everybody was so used to being disappointed by Disney and went through the roof when we actually got what we wanted for once. So yeah, far be it from a humble human like me to eschew the value of "subverting expectations", but maybe... occasionally...it is the profitable, fulfilling, right thing to do to actually give the fans/consumers what they want/what works.

@@TheRivrPrncess I knew Luke was in the cards after Episode 14. I had heard rumors about him showing up, and he was the Jedi I wanted most of all to appear. I actually had it spoiled for me because I didn't get to watch it until that night in my timezone, which gave youtubers plenty of time to post thumbnails of Luke in the hallway. Thing is, it still got such a strong reaction out of me. At one point I involuntarily clapped my hands like a seal. We got years of material seeing Obi-wan and Anakin in their prime and I finally got to see a little of that explored with Luke. I hadn't had that much of a reaction to film since Godzilla King of the Monsters. It just works so well when legacy characters get a rework in the light we want to see them in.

Just a naive kid with the power to do anything, thrust into something they can't get out of. But no matter what happens, they always do what is right. @@jeffl.304 Diversity for the sake of diversity is bad. Equality of opportunity is far more important than equality of outcome.
If everyone truly wanted equal representation, one could argue that many demographics are overrepresented, when they make up a far smaller percentage of the overall population of a country than the percentage of roles they have. However, that argument is equally stupid, and discriminates equally regardless of who it benefits.
They should simply hire on merit. Diversity quotas keep discrimination alive, as people focus on race, sex, etc, over their performance itself. And changing an established character, or making them act in a completely different way, only to kill them off or write them out is bad writing.

As soon as I saw the X-wing I knew who it was. I expected it to be Ezra that would show up personally - I didn't think they would have the courage to do this. Luke was the one character I was certain it wouldn't be; after how Disney had handled things, I didn't believe they would do anything like this. I have never felt emotion over a TV show like I did when watching this for the first time. I didn't expect seeing the real Luke to hit the way it did. I grew up immersed in Star Wars, it's my favorite thing. But, I had essentially lost all hope for Star Wars by the time this aired - I didn't even start watching until the season was half way through. Before Disney, I would read all the books, play every game, watch every interview I could, etc. Seeing Luke, the real Luke, come back was like A New Hope and Return of The Jedi all at once, only more in real life than in story. It gave me hope for the future of Star Wars again - it made me really enjoy Star Wars again. It made me want to fight for Star Wars against the people who tried to destroy it. The memory of watching this for the first time is my favorite memory of watching any show. It brought the real Star Wars back to me, and no matter what Disney tries to do, I won't ever give that up again.

Well, not exactly. It took Lando with the Millennium Falcon and a squadron of rebel ships to destroy the second Death Star. And Han, Leia, Chewie and the ewoks to turn off its shield.
That didn't look like secondary for me.

@@Herandro_just_Herandro I was more invested for the Luke vs Vader fight, you seem to have completely missed the topic in terms of secondary. It’s not about if what they did was important it’s about what catches the audience attention the most and it’s Luke. Every character did something important even R2, but do you care more about Luke or R2?

@@MarkSmith-vo1vn on the importance of R2D2 for the STAR WARS universe, that was a certain message... "... Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope". I believe NOTHING we're talking about would've happened without it completing its task.
"But you're missing the point, cause in RETURN OF THE JEDI..."
Really? Was it because they were like the main antagonist and main protagonist (at least to what the audience knew about the use of the Force), father and son, good and evil, possible redemption (Vader) against possible new Dark Side Lord (Luke), freedom against tyranny...? So PERHAPS Lucas has focused the narrative on this aspect.
Don't know how old are you, by I've been watching STAR WARS since I was literally a kid.
I can guarantee there's no misunderstanding on my side.
What I meant was no matter how powerful Luke or Vader were, both needed help to do their jobs. To what point can you tell it secondary? That's enough subject for a conference on character and plot building.
BTW, in a good mood here.
May the Force be with you.
One more thing: R2D2 is more like a means to an end. Making a comparison between Luke and Solo looks more valid.

We all see what we see. I pay more attention to mouths than I do eyes, so things like that detract for me. I would imagine the degree of revulsion depends on the person and what points stand out to them in judging what's human and what's not.
