    I feel that codigos are essential part of tango and they help to shape tango culture and contribute to making tango dance unique and special.

    If tango was a country, nostalgia would be its capital. There is no tango without tradition. Respect it.

    The key to handling sweat smell is to wash clothes immediately (same or the next day), or at least dry them on the sun/balcony. If you put a wet shirt into a corner and leave it there - then it will be stinky even after a wash. Especially for guys wearing a jacket - many of them do not wash it soon enough and smell bad. Socks the easiest problem - just change them regularly. You can do it twice per milonga in worst case.

      Local customs should serve the same purpose. We don't need to adopt some interpretation of what we're told applies in BA (except in BA), unless it's a game everyone subscribes to. It's obvious that not everyone subscribes.

    One point: It;s said that the codigos help protect the women. They do. But they also help keep men in the game. At a typical milonga there is only enough time to dance with some of the followers. With the codigas everyone can choose who to dance with without insulting anyone by saying no. That's a good thing. Sometimes you feel like doing community development and sometimes you just want to dance with your friends.

    I found some guys out there don’t shower before the milonga or practica consistently - not just one off type of situation, it’s very hard to enjoy the tanda as I have to stop breathing somehow for 12 minutes, thank you guys for calling out that issue, it’s a real thing out there

      There are women out there that stink as well. And they can be even worst than the guys as they wrap their stinky armpits on the leaders and make their shirts stink.

    I know some dancers who sweat profusely from chronic pain, medical conditions, genetics, etc. and they wear athletic/jersey material t-shirts to practicas, then long-sleeve button-downs made from the same material to milongas. The fabric wicks away moisture and looks identical to a cotton dress shirt from far away. Main difference is the collared shirts are more form-fitting and usually from dancewear brands vs mainstream fashion

    Suits are there for the ladies but some love it so much that they will put their lipstick on it.
    I don’t blame guys not wearing a suit as I saw many suits ruined by lipstick or mascara.

    Where I have issue is when people see failure to adhere to codigos as, offensive. For example: I ask if you'd be interested in the next tanda (because I'm sitting next to you) and now you're INSULTED, that's taking the codigos too far. Some of the codigos are unintuitive and nonsensical, eg "thanking someone before the end of the tanda", or "ask the man before you invite the woman".
    I personally see the codigoes as USEFUL but also in many situations antiquitdated. As someone who dances multiple other styles, I can see those other styles function fine if not FAR BETTER without our codigos. Sadly when I mention I dance tango, the sad but accurate thing I always hear is "old people dance tango", or "tango people are a bit stuck up".
    In our pocket of the world there's several milongas that only use 2 song tandas, which work very well, and suits that crowd. Note that we also have other milongas that run the spectrum too.

    There is always a pushy guy tailgating you or someone at the front who does weird stuff like going back and forth and bumping into everybody. For that reason, I don't care being pushed into the inner lane. Plus, you kind of get like a spotlight (unintentionally), because sometimes you end up in the dead center of the salon.

    • @CW-om2qq
      @CW-om2qq 3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah. Had that at a recent marathon party with some guy in front. You expect better, but some dancers think they're better than they are. It's rare for an organiser to call out poor floor craft (another codigo!). You can't insist on cancer/mirada if poor behaviour is ignored.

    • @bertle615
      @bertle615 3 месяца назад +1

      @@CW-om2qqwhen I was an organizer I found that early density controlled floorcraft as well as having good dancers come early to set the tone. Guest list and early bird incentives can be used to encourage good floorcraft.

    In some countries in Eastern Europe, people smell awful. Basically, the East part of Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Russia …a little bit in Hungary. All others South in the Balkans, Serbia, Romania, Croacia, Slovenia, are ok in that regard. People do not shower and on top, never use deodorant. Deodorants in Czechia are really bad. If you ever go, bring your own US deo.
    BTW, East Asian people in general, never smell bad. Something in their genetics apparently prevents that B.O.

    My pet peeve is when a lead enters the floor at a crowded Milonga and then spends a minute “establishing a connection” with the follow while the line is waiting to enter the dance floor.

    • @LeftFootRightFootTango

      Well I come from the school of etiquette where the people on the dance floor has the right of way. Since I came late, I have no priority and it will be up to the kindness of the people on the floor to let me in.
      I know this is not a common idea but one that I respect. I will wait patiently until the song ends if I have to so I don’t disrupt the couples already on the floor.

      I always wear a suit at evening Milongas, so it gets dry cleaned every two or three weeks. Always a shower first and always a fresh shirt. I’m fortunate (I suppose) to have a girlfriend dance partner who is sensitive to smells. No cologne either. This goes for ladies BTW. There are a few follows who I enjoy dancing with that I no longer do because their perfume is overwhelming.

  • @CW-om2qq
    @CW-om2qq 3 месяца назад +2

    Of course it all depends which interpretation of codigos is being played out where you're dancing. They have evolved away from BA. Sure, we can play the atavistic game. Hang on, I need segregated sex seating for cabeceo because it's so dark but with disco lighting, and I can only see the back of their heads if they are sat. Or maybe myopia resticts vision both ways. Does my wife need to go separately to get dances? So, what's actually happening is you chat by drinks. Someone comes to sit on the currently vacant seat, and chats. Ir maybe they chat with me or my wife to dance with the partner.
    But then new dancers coming onto the floor just start where they are without checking (cabeceo again).
    It's 2024. No one is going to lose face by being turned down verbally. If you're female, you're already empowered! You can ask me!
    Basically tha whole purpose has changed. I'm no longer waiting for that dance with that special person (target?) I've waited all night to dance with.
    Nevertheless as it's said: when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Observe the game in play, and play along.
    Typically we go together and dance with friends, newcomers and other acquaintances.
    Re attire - depends where you are and the environment. Danced al fresco at 10pm last week with a temperature of 32°C (90°F in old units!). Shorts and a T! (and for a lot of followers). Took a shower and shave before - and showered again after.
    Usually just shirt and trousers if aircon. Jacket? Suit? You're joking - unless built-in cooling. And that's back in north-west Europe.

    Argentine Tango 1940s differs from AT 1920s and certainly from 2024. OK, it got UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage. And there's a lot of lore there. The US got what someone documented, as did Europe. Or maybe it was like the Rudi Valentino movie? It's evolved. Is US pizza, or coffee, anything like real Italian, or just a poor copy?
