    Just wanted to give a humungous thumbs up and thank you for creating this video Mr. Nuggetz! I just picked up a Solo bundle (my first drone) a week or so ago and this made learning so much easier.

    Thanks so much Joey. I just worked through all this on my own, and figured out most of it, but this tutorial would have saved me lots of time and struggle. Very well done. I learned a lot that I didn't know, for example that the altitude for a ROI waypoint is where the camera points. Also really great about making sure which mission is loaded. One thing you didn't mention is that you can save a number of different missions on your device with export and import file. One addition: if you take off Solo before initiating the mission, the Auto button to start the mission will show up where the Arm/Dronie is when not yet flying. In my testing, it seems that that speed is not MPH but some multiple of what you have set in Solo. If I have Solo at turtle, 2.0 is slow, but if I have it at rabbit, 2.0 is fast.

      Glad you liked it. Please ensure you set your Solo up so that you have Manual mode mapped to one of the buttons in case you find yourself in a situation where you have to take control over Solo in an emergency such as a weak GPS condition. Not sure what your experience level is but I like to tell all new users about doing that just in case.

    Thanks for taking the time to share these instructions. I'll have to watch it a few more times to be more clear on how to do it all. I tried working along with the video and ended up missing some key points. I'll have to try something real short the first time. I have only had my Solo for a couple of weeks and don't want to lose it or crash yet. Trees seem to be my biggest problem. That and all the restricted flying areas. Never knew there were so many Helo Pads and small private airfields.

    What a GREAT tutorial Joey. Many thanks for taking the time to go through all of this and posting it. I'm starting to get interested in maybe purchasing a quad-copter and the 3DR SOLO seems to have some of the best built in features. I hadn't heard of the TOWER app before. Is that built in from SOLO or is that something you added later?
    1.) On the mission programming, can you just upload a blank mission to clear what was previously uploaded?
    2.) If you have it set so that it will automatically return home when it loses signal and it's behind a building, or ?, will it try to fly straight back (through the bldg) or will it follow the flight path that took it to that position?
    Looking forward to seeing some more tutorials from you. GREAT JOB !!!

    Again I want to say great video Joey, thank you for going to trouble of making it. There's a few questions I have that are not answered in the video and I can't find documentation on (no surprise there as you say that's why you made the video in the first place).
    I like that idea of utilizing Tower in setting preliminary flight paths in new locations that I have not had two opportunity to scout and set up smart shots at yet. To that end a few questions.
    1) What is a Spline Waypoint?
    2) What does a Reset ROI command do exactly? (I understand setting an ROI but I don't understand where the camera is instructed to point after a Reset ROI command is initiated).
    3) What is Do Jump?
    4) What is Set Servo?
    6) What is Realtime camera footprint in the user interface?
    5) Is there a way to reset the default speed of the Solo in Tower? (I found default altitude preferences in the advanced settings menu within the settings menu but nothing for speed). It seems awful fast with a lot of aggressive pitching & rolling as it changes directions between way points. I understand I can set the first command as a reset speed command but it would be nice to not have to do that for every mission but set the default to speed that lends itself to nice cinematic movement.
    6) Similar to question #5 - Is there anyway to slow down or smooth panning & tilting between ROI's? To get the Solo to behave more like it does when utilizing smart shots in the Solo app, i.e. nice smooth logarithmic camera moves, nut sudden herky jerky movements.
    and lastly (for now)...
    7) Has anyone figured a way to safely pause a Tower mission, jump to the Solo app and create and execute a few smart shots, and then continue on with the Tower mission. This was not something 3DR support recommended as their official response was "We don't recommend using both applications at the same time since that could lead to misbehavior. Doing so is completely at the customer's discretion" but I did read a thread on the 3DR forum speculating if it could be done with one android and one iOS device - but it wasn't clear if any of the members were able to accomplish it. If it could be safely done it seems potentially a great way to save flight time/battery usage at new filming locations.

    Fantastic tutorial, thanks! I need to ask what might be a silly question.. In order for the camera to point at an ROI, must the camera/gimbal be controlled by the flight controller? Or if the camera is fixed straight ahead, is the 'copter rotated to point at the ROI?

    Great video Joey. Quick question, if I set failsafe parameter to 2 and upload it to solo, then later on I'm just flying solo under my own control (using solo app) and I lose connection with controller, will solo just keep flying or initiate a RTL? Or, do the changed parameters only affect solo while using tower app on autonomous mode?

    • @joeynuggetz
      @joeynuggetz  8 лет назад +1

      It only affects you in Auto mode. Good question. I had the same concern but this is an auto mode parameter so you should be good to go.

    FYI I don't believe the speed changes from imperial to metric or vice versa. Default is m/s. Very good video though, i learned a lot. The other waypoint that would be good to touch on is Spline since that smoothes all the waypoints and flight paths into curves. I'm also glad you showed how to check what mission is on the solo and make sure you upload your mission. I recently activated a mission that was set up 50 miles away from where i was and sure enough solo turned and started heading that direction. a quick press of the pause button and upload of the new mission solved that quick.

    • @joeynuggetz
      @joeynuggetz  9 лет назад

      +Matthew Bird Holy smokes, Matt. That could have been disasterous. I think I should have hammered that point a little harder in my video. Could you imagine that taking place AND having the return to home parameter set to 2 like I show in my video? :-) Wouldn't even return home. In your case Solo would have eventually come back assuming you didn't change the FS_THR_ENABLE parameter to 2. But that doesn't guarantee it wouldn't hit a tree or a house on the way to or from home :-)

      Glad you found it informative.You're totally right about it missing instructions on how to connect Solo to Tower. I totally didn't even think about that. I guess I assumed that most people were unsure of how to actually use tower so I took for granted that people had at least connected to it. I'll add a caption to the video when I get a moment. thanks for the feedback.

    Hi mate, thanks a lot for such a good, detailed video. Great stuff!
    Lol once I get my new solo from insurance (first real crash practically cracked Solo in half) I'll be pretty keen to get experimenting with Tower!
    Just curious though - if I go to do a mission, especially if I change the parameters and tell solo to continue and come to land 15km away at a friend's house - what would happen if for some reason solo lost satellite contact halfway through the journey? Would it just stop and hover until it regained satellite connection? Would it just land on the spot? Or did I read somewhere that the missions are cached and solo can even complete a mission with the routes and commands saved to the on board computer after having lost GPS signal?
    Cheers, Kev.

    Good video thanks! re the throttle/RC failsafe setting - what happens if it's flying in non-auto mode (ie std or ltr) when the condition occurs? I'm guessing it will "continue with the mission", but which part of the mission (beginning/middle/end)? If it goes to the last waypoint, which should be close to the launch point, then isn't that the same as RTL except maybe for the altitude?

    • @rsilk2969

      Once you attempt to control the video in tower i.e tapping the video preview then the controller gimbals are disabled. You can control the gimbals by dragging up and down in the video window. There's actually a new version of 3dr services out that fixes that. I believe once you click away or minimize the video window in tower, the controller should regain control of the gimbal now with the latest 3dr services version.

    For a real estate video, can you 'circle' one time high over trees, then set waypoints to slow and turtle low across the front and then to the entry, back out to safe altitude and home? The resulting video could be spliced to one of those hand held videos where the door opens magically and you proceed inside. I want to do areal photos and videos at a cheaper cost than using a manned aircraft. I figure to charge $50 for travel time, site study, programming*, mission and travel back with the real estate agent. *So would the programming time make my idea a financial bust, once I learned the ropes?
    I wrote the first flight control system maintenance T.O. for the F-16, so I thought this video was clear and simple. However not for me because I am old now. I was tired so it was hard to keep my eyes focused. It was hard to identify symbols on your little tablet. I never thought to view it full screen. When I can afford a drone I hope this video is still available. Happy Thanksgiving.

    One more important Tower question I forgot to post...
    8) Is there a way to pinpoint a particular location I am unfamiliar with the topography of without physically being located there, such as punching in a specific address and/or GPS coordinates in Tower? Or perhaps changing to "street view" from satellite view and using road names to find a location in an unfamiliar area? Say for creating a mission to film a house in an unfamiliar neighborhood....

      @joeynuggetz  8 лет назад

      I don't believe there's a way to do that. Best you can do is eyeball it with google maps and then swipe the tower map to same location or landmark

      +Joey Nuggetz thanks Joey. Any ideas on the previous questions I posted?

      seanrmatic change the map preferences from satellite to hybrid and you'll get the street names on your map. I hope that helps.

    I need help with the survey part with the solo I can't get it to trigger the camera it just flies and it does the mission I only see waypoints. I even put the settings for Hero 4 and no camera trigger waypoints even pop up

      I dont believe the actual photo triggering part is implemented yet. I was hoping it was by now since we have GoPro controls. When I tried the same last autumn I was sad to see that the solo wasn't snapping pictures.

    What's the name of the app that you're using?

    • @joeynuggetz
      @joeynuggetz  4 года назад +1

      The screen recorder app? I think it was called screen recorder for android. The mission app was called tower but not sure if its still being maintained. Solex app on Android has a similar waypoint feature and is actively being developed.

      @@joeynuggetz sorry I was talking about the tower app because I couldn't find it on the play store. I did some research and found out that is not available anymore and a good substitute is qgroundcountrol. What do you think about it?

    What is structure scan?

      @joeynuggetz  8 лет назад

      It's supposed to allow you to take photos of a structure like a building for later importing into a mapping program. Never used it though.

      Glad you enjoyed the vid. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. If you haven't already, there is another app that lots of people have moved onto called "Solex". Gotta pay for it and its sorta expensive ($30) and then another $20 for the "mission" part of the app but at least the app is supported and the author keeps adding features and fixing issues. There's also a facebook group dedicated to it. Only available on Android.
