- It is feared more than 600 people have died after hurricane Helene battered through the US, officials have said.
Nationwide, more than 100 people have been confirmed dead, according to the BBC's US partner CBS, with officials warning that figure is expected to rise.
Helene slammed into Florida as a category four hurricane on Thursday, but was downgraded to a tropical storm.
Rescuers are focusing their efforts on Asheville, North Carolina - one of the worst affected areas.

The area affected is 2x the size of the entire UK, of course it is going to take time to reach hundreds of small towns with washed out roads. The sheer size of the area that is heavily impacted is hard to comprehend.

I hope the death toll doesn't reach 600 but it's going to get quite a bit worse. There are still lots of places that nobody can get to because of the destruction of roads and bridges. Some of these places weren't easy to get to BEFORE this disaster.
I hate how our domestic press has covered it and even on youtube there's a flood of narcissist talking heads making real on site footage hard to find.
It's so much worse than has been shown. First off all tornadoes touched down in the moutains and hills which is nuts and explains the utter devastation but they just aren't talking about that.

A hurricane of same intensity hit Philippines just recently but only 2 people died. Something is wrong here
We are used to 20 hurricanes a year, its a normal Tuesday for us
I'll tell you a big reason, the location and the land. This area, and all of the Appalachians in general does not get hurricanes. The infrastructure isn't built with hurricanes in mind, the people have never had to bear a hurricane, the damn trees never evolved to withstand hurricanes much less even tropical storms. The Philippines have existed within hurricanes since before humans ever reached its shores, they're used to it, they evolved with that as an external factor.
The more global warming intensifies, the more inland places such as western NC and surrounding areas, which are around 500 miles from the Atlantic shore, are affected.

There are places that have worse hurricanes than we do. China and the Philippines come to mind. Storms pick up even more steam when they cross the much bigger Pacific Ocean.
Perhaps if Americans built their homes properly in the first place less houses might be totally destroyed every time?
