Hobbyists use high altitude balloons to capture stunning images from the stratosphere, highlighting the curvature of earth and the darkness of space
Space agencies and companies use stratospheric balloons to test and validate new technologies developed for long-duration space missions and to perform scientific experiments in a near-space environment for far less than the cost of a satellite
These balloons often reach altitudes of 125 000 ft and stay floating in the earth’s atmosphere for months, circumventing the globe many times
And might soon they might be used to transport humans for space tourism
How does high altitude ballooning work?
How can you launch one yourself?
Huge thanks to John Guthery for taking the time to share his experience!
