@@CoinPatrol I have a small collection of coins including a 1889 shilling a 1910 shilling and a 1970 shilling .I believe this is from a proof set. They are just stuck in the wardrobe now .
My dad used to work on the gas board emptying meters. In the 1970s he used to come home every evening with a huge bad of shillings and florins then sort through them fishing out all the pre 1947s and swapping them for newer coins. We still have a whole stack of them. With the amount of silver they contain they should be work a few quid now.
a wonderful set of coins there Paul. and to think it was only as recently as 1990 that we were able to use those coins to buy a portion of chips. and other stuff.
Thanks for watching David. Yes, I meant to mention in the video that these shillings were circulating as 5p's up untill 1990. Then I forgot to include it. 👍
Amazing that you can buy an uncirculated bag of coins like that from a charity shop. I'm watching from the states and over here I am guessing this would be similar to a thrift shop or goodwill store. I have just started getting into pre-decimal currency so I appreciated the explanation re: the difference between the English and Scottish Shillings. Great video!
You did well there Paul, on the 1919 shilling they also omitted K.G. initials, do you know why? I noticed the Queen's head on the obverse was not as strongly struck as the reverse striking's, this was also a problem on the South Africa union £. s. d. series I wonder who made the obverse dies for both mints?
@@CoinPatrol I may have found one, but in case that one falls through keep an eye open for me and let me know. I don't always check the Ebay UK site as I'm across the pond here.
What a fantastic little collection. I know you said the George VI coins were not in as good condition as the QEII coins but they were still in pretty good nick as far as I could see.
I'm 73. I remember using farthings. You could get 1 aniseed ball or 1 salad fruit or 1 black jack for a farthing. 1 single ciggie for my grandma for a penny happeny.
Nice to see that 1964s exist. I am still trying to find both English and Scottish varieties.. Funnily enough I have Several of the Scottish 59 and 61 varieties..
Bargin of the century there Paul!--- Does anyone know why the 1976 was deemed NIFC? and in practice did that mean anything different to the Proofs of 1972-, 1973 and 1974?
Hi Ian. Proof coins are struck using hand-finishe dies and is the highest quality of coin a mint produces, made specially for coin collectors. A NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation) is a normal coin, but in 1976 it was only minted for coin year sets.
I don’t mind the lack of gloves at all…but the surfaces of most of those coins were in amazing condition, hardly knocked about at all. Even the older ones. Every time you threw them into your hand or scraped them together I winced at the noises 😂 . And even without gloves, surely at least touch just the edges so as to minimise any future damage from the sweat and oils from your skin? Beautiful set of coins. I’ve got a whole jar of shillings that I collected as an ignorant teenager years back.
They are in very good condition, got my Magnet so funny the warning paper. I now have my 1st £2 Coin which is not bad out of 50 of them. I am going to make a controversial post, got to clear my desk and get camera set up. Love the Magnet have you tried getting something smaller the the thing itself?
when will u be doing another penny hunt its been a while now since u did the lase one i miss ur hunt cos it fasanates me watching ur hunts of old pennies
Hi Wayne. I'm having problems getting pennies from my usual supplier, but I have managed to get a batch from elsewhere. I will be making the video in the next couple of days.
Hi Paul didn’t you do well. When I ask in the charity shops if they have any coins ,they say sorry but we have not long sold them.Just my luck, but I still keep trying. From J.R S.
Hello Coin Patrol. Ive recently been inspired by your 'do you have a rare [date] penny' series and would like to do a version of these videos for my tiktok account. I was wondering if I could make these videos with your permission and give credit to you in the videos?
I had those books that I put my coins in. The acid in the paper eventually corroded the pennies and nickels. Hopefully the ones in the UK are different. EDIT: I see yours were made in Racine, Wisconsin.
Hi Paul, you did well finding these and for £5, whenever I ask it's always "no we haven't got any" or "they get taken to the bank". I did get lucky with some world coins in Luton not that long ago, but considering how many was there and what I paid for them i would of been better off just getting a KG but it was for a worthy charity.
I started collecting coins in my fathers shop 1960 the silver ones 1920 and before after that they were half silver, O and i found a 1952 6 pence was worth £32 dont know now.
I have nearly 5 million views on my videos and you are the first to complain about the background music. I keep it at a vey low volume but it's staying. Sorry you won't be watching.
Bob-a-Job's a good'un 😁 Great condition on those coins, and a steal at the price you paid for them. I get the same knock back answers when I ask about coins in Charity shops. Haven't managed to get a single coin, Uk or World, from any of those establishments yet. Sometimes banks have a few in their safes that they will accumulate, and then send en masse as "garbled coin" once a year back to the Bank of England, who then I suppose send them back to the Royal Mint for melting down. 🧲
I always ask charity shops if they have any coins. Last year one had an old album with Victorian coins in it and a couple of nice George III pennies. They said they couldn't sell it to me though because the boss wasn't there and they had no idea what to charge me. They said she'll be in tomorrow. I went back the next day, the boss was there but they couldn't find the coins! Very odd! I must have asked in over 100 shops over the years and these shilling were the only time I was lucky. 👍
Even the staples were better in the good old days !
In my Whitman albums where the year is blank, my late Father, who passed in 1998 had written the years, so that is precious to me.
Well done to the previous collector who put together all those mostly uncirculated coins
Yes, and we'll never know who it was 😥 Thanks for watching
So satisfying to see a complete set like that! Thanks for sharing your experience, Paul!
Yes, I was very happy with tha. Thanks for watching Andrew 👍
They have been in a wardrobe in that bag for the last 40 years .Great find.

Great Video, how lucky you were. I was born in '53 and do have a UNC penny and a used sixpence, but those shillings looked fantastic.
Thanks... I enjoyed that! This video will make me pay better attention to this series of coins when I find an example while metal detecting!
Cheers Vossie, thanks for watching 👍
Some of the British Whitman folders are getting tough to get. I'm having a hard time finding an empty 1860 to 1880 Penny book for my set.
Yes, I've noticed the older folders are becoming scarce. When they do come up for sale they tend to be quite pricey.

My view of gloves, if they're uncirculated, maybe, but noone was wearing gloves when they were in circulation.

I'm aging myself but I remember using a sixpence in the late 70s at the school tuckshop

A BU 1964 is the only non-silver that I have. I collected it in 1964 during a trip to London. My collection ends with 1946.
I never knew the value of these. Brilliant 🎉
Thanks for watching 2Cap 👍
Another great video and a lovely set to find
Thanks for watching Derrick. Yes, I was very pleased with that lot. 👍
😊😊😊😊😊
Why is there a dot after the 7 in the date at 8.59 ?
I don't know what the significance of the dot is, but it' appears on every 1947 Scottish Shilling.
the king George coins look good given their age i wonder if this was a kids collection as the dates and condition are all over the place
Very nice purchase Paul!! 😃👍
Cheers, Alrik. I was happy with this buy. Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for the video, where can I but the coin sleeves like you are using?
Where do you get it

Where do you get these coin albums from? Would love to get some for my coins!
Hi . I get all my Whitman albums from eBay
@ cheers for that! What is a good price for a Whitman album?
The sweat on your fingers will damage the surface finish if you do not wear gloves.

That was £5 well spent. An enviable collection. My BU shilling collection ends in 1946.

Just worth saying that the first English shilling of 1953 is actually the Obverse 2 variety. As opposed to Obverse 1.
8:10 Dick Van Dyke is a genius. AI refuses to talk about him because his name means two vulger things in America.
Of course it was worth it, you helped a charity shop.

Thanks for the video Paul 👍

What charity shop sell bags of shillings? I need some cheap for an old fruit machine and i cant find none anywhere!.
I'd Dremel those staples back to new...i know I'm a little sad...
That’s a new one on me. I feel the stirrings of an obsession.🤓
I never saw a sixpence in use after about 1972/73 just *never* and shillings were treated identically to 5p pieces :)
Did he say the last shillings were minted in 1966?
Yes, last minted for circulation in 1966
Definitely worth it
Erm, shouldn’t the monarch at the heading of the first page read Elisabeth ll instead of l ?
It should. Well spotted. I hadn't noticed that 👍
Clearly you return the bag so they can look at you just as blankly as when you asked the price.
Not English but uk
11:18 just wonder why there’s no representation of Wales and Ireland those years just Scottish and English only
Innit that unfair tho
Nice find. You've well got your fiver back
Yes, I was happy with that lot Donna. Thanks for watching 👍
Very nice 👍⚓️🧲
Worth it or not id buy the crap outta stuff like this.
Every time you rub your fingers on the coins you are adding your skin oils to the surface, permanently etching fingerprints into the coin.
Wondered why there's none dated 1967?
The last shillings were mimted in 1966 Danny. I've no idea why they didnt go on until 1967. Maybe they had enough in circulation 👍
You don't use gloves to hold a coin, you hold it by the edges, it's then fingerprint (and other contaminants) free.
You can always send them to Brian May
Brian plucks with sixpences not shillings 🎸
And yet the coin you show at the start says 1967?
Thats true real steel wire ...
These would be useful if you are a time traveler.
Scottish shilling with lion rampant.
