A movie with a great use of music is Drive. The music sets the mood and vibe of the movie and the song choices are great. I think a certain aspect of the movie is also built around the music as exhibited by this bit of story about the first meeting of Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn: During the car ride home, REO Speedwagon came on the radio and Refn started singing along and bawling, then turned to Gosling and said "The movie is about a guy who drives around LA at night listening to pop songs". If that song hadn't come on the radio, the movie might not have happened. Another great movie built around the music is Baby Driver.
I love how a goofy crude space blockbuster franchise, which is most appealing to kids, soundtracks music from before they were born! And it makes me want to see or make a movie that would appeal to the 50+ demographic that plays 2010s-2020s teen pop, most of which even weren’t Billboard Hot 100 hits. I’m thinking a serious drama about someone in their 60s listening to their dead grandchild’s music and becoming obsessed with it! Obviously, that’s just one trait of the character and it’s not what the whole movie should be about but it’d be awesome.
