Once when we were hiking the north end of the Bartram Trail in North Carolina (near where it joins the Appalachian Trail) it rained really hard for a couple-three hours. It was summer. We had umbrellas, so our bodies were mostly dry, but our feet were wet, wet, wet. When it started getting dark, we pulled over to a level place about 50 yards off the trail. Art pushed over a small, dead tree and dug out the dry punk wood in the middle. That was his fire starter, and then we sat around with our boots off and dried our prune-wrinkly feet. That was 15 years ago. Art is really good at this. -ART's dad.

When I was in my early twenties a couple friends and I went snowshoeing in winter on the north side of Mt. St. Helens. It was an adventure, but the related part is that when we stopped to camp, one of my friends started a fire on the deep snow, so he could make tea. The fire sunk about three feet and we had to cut steps in the packed snow to get down to the fire. Actually, I think he had a small, backpacking stove. But it sank.

I would love to see you in videos like this with your Son and Grandkids. I bet you would have a lot of great experiences to share. Nothing beats the sage wisdom of time and experience.

I'm more or less deep in the background of some of the videos. My interest now is in observing the quiet miracles of every day. Like imagining the Earth spinning around the sun--that sort of thing. As an example, we often went out at night and looked for dark skies to observe the major meteor showers. I've got a big bonfire to burn soon. Maybe Art and clan will join me.

More like this, Art. I mean keep up with the homesteading, of course, but wilderness wisdom goes hand in hand with homesteading. One tip I taught my sons about gathering enough fire wood is to gather what you think you need, then gather five times as much. THEN you should have enough!

This was neat. I took a survival course a couple of years ago. We went over starting a fire, but not really how to find dry fuel in inclement weather. I don't even know if that occurred to any of us. Thanks!

It's also good to know how to build a 3 sided shelter as well. So you're protected along with the heat. Just don't burn down your shelter in the process! =P
Great job with that fire Art, I've had to start a fire on the prairie with the winds gusting crazy out here in SD. It's difficult but do-able. =) We were being taught how by one of the guys here on Ellsworth AFB for a field trip for the kids at a local school I drove bus for. It was great to learn. I also got to pretend jump out of a plane (it was really just off a platform) all strapped up in the parachute gear because none of the other bus drivers wanted to do it. LoL It was a really fun day with the kids and the guys from the base.
    🌾Merry meet 🌿

I have a new respect for fire after our recent NC wildfires. Fortunately on a day like this when everything is soaked, the risk is pretty low. On a dry day I would have cleared a larger area of leaves. Good point.
