The sealing of the 144,000 could not have begun in 1848, as everyone living then has turned to dust. The 144,000 go alive to heaven without seeing death.
There will be many who do not die before entering Heaven. The 144,000 have a special purpose for which they receive a special seal, before they receive their ultimate reward.
And yet EGW says it begun in 1848. Perhaps your understanding of the 144,000 is wrong.

What does it mean to have his name and his father's name written on their foreheads? Is this symbolic language to mean that you know their names? The name of God is Yahweh and the Hebrew name of the Messiah was Yahshua. Could this be what the Apostle Yahuchanon / John meant in Rev 14:1? God's name Yahweh was removed from the scriptures almost 7,000 times and replaced with "the LORD". The prophet YirmeYahu / Jeremiah prophesied that the Messiah's name would be forgotten:
But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter, and I did not know that they had devised plots against me, saying, “Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit, and let’s cut him off from the land of the living so that his name will no longer be remembered.” Jeremiah 11:19

So does the sealing start at the beginning of the 3 1/2 years?

We are amid the perils of the last days, the time will soon come when the prophecy of Ezekiel 9 will be fulfilled; that prophecy should be carefully studied, for it WILL BE FULFILLED TO THE VERY LETTER. Study also the tenth chapter which represents the hand of God as at work to bring perfect method and harmonious working into all the operations of his prepared instrumentalities. The eleventh and twelfth chapters also should receive critical, thoughtful attention. Let these prophecies be studied on your knees before God; unless you take up the stumbling-blocks which by your own perverse spirit you have laid in the way of many who have been connected with you, God will turn His face utterly from you and your associates.

You know sometimes what people are preaching or teaching is not necessarily error ... it's just that it takes some time to get to the bottom of all the verses in the Bible and the quotes in the spirit of prophecy. We need to come together and pray for each other as the holy spirit is the only one that can make sure we have the proper understanding. Our work is to be unified and kind and caring to each other. I think I understand sometimes and then later someone mentioned something and I am surprised and I can tell that it is truth compared to what I first thought I understood
