    Dear Mike,
You are just fabulous and incredibly informative. I was losing hope after being overloaded with countless and useless "reviews" of these dyes and products all over youtube and google. Most of them are just regurgitated marketing slogans and superficial information.
My bf told me he came across some videos he thought were exactly my taste: "fab and sassy and geeky" at the same time. (I hate it when he is right) I subscribed 20 seconds into your video.
Your clear explanation truly reflects your expert knowledge of the ingredients and their interactions just superbly. For someone like myself who happens to be a beauty junkie yet must understand the basic elements of any products before giving the benefit of doubt- your approach of product reviews are damn valuable. I really hope you continue your style and become huge!

Ammonia - Free color does tend to be Less Damaging - IF it is properly formulated. HOWEVER, it also seems to give LESS coverage of gray and a LESS INTENSE RESULT as well as less lightening. Ammonia will evaporate as the color processes and lower the pH during processing so it starts out strong and gets gentler as the color works.

In my experience, Olia damaged my hair noticeably less than traditional, ammonia based permanent hair color. I recently used a high-lift ash brown color by Loreal, a drugstore box version, to try to lift and tone my hair in one process. I had success doing this years ago using the professional version of this high-lift color. The box version left my hair brassy. It was a rust color which badly washed me out, given my neutral-cool, Bright Winter skin tone.
I used Olia Darkest Platinum Brown only a few days later to get something akin to my natural color. I used to have brown-black hair naturally, but it has lightened over the years to a medium/dark chestnut color which is less intense than my natural color used to be. Anyway! The Olia gave me a lovely soft-black shade which faded to a cool dark brown. My hair didn't seem any more damaged from the Olia than it already had been from the high-lift color I'd used before it.
I used a black Olia color years ago, on virgin hair, and found it very gentle that time, too. So, my experiences seem to suggest that ammonia damages my hair more than the alkaline ingredients in the ammonia-free dyes.
I appreciate you telling me the details of how the colors differ scientifically, though! Thank you for your content!

All my life I had been scared of colouring my hair of the fear that it will increase the greying of my hair and damage my hair. Finally on my 30th birthday I decided to get my hair coloured as a gift to myself and you helped my get rid of my fears. The unknown scares. With the in depth info that you give the fear of the unknown goes away and when you know what you are going to do and how to handle and care for it afterwards things become easy. I owe my new love for hair colour to you❤️. Still everytime I have to go for a hair colour I binge watch your videos the night before and then walk in with confidence into the salon knowing what I want😁

This is reassuring me bc I accidentally bought ammonia and I always do ammonia free bc it was always drilled into me since highschool that anomia is so damaging. They were just learning about this, and it was a good 20-24 years ago. I believe less is best and since I'm dying it red it grows out nicely and doesn't look like a total mess. It blends nicely with my natural brunette. According to what mine says, there's oils and stuff in it as well. So, that in itself has to be good for the hair health. I'm planning on letting it go for 4 months.

I have found that some brands with ammonia really fry my hair, but the ammonia free brands make a lot of my hair fall out and my hair is much thinner. The best dye I have ever used is Garnier Olia, it’s very gentle on my scalp and hair, but not a big shade range. Worst brand for me that I have ever used was clairol nice and easy, it really irritated my scalp and kicked off a round of seboreic dermatitis.

Thanks. I have chronic dry eyes and find the ammonia fumes hurt my eyes. My scalp has been fine after though, tried 2 ammonia based brown box dyes, no itch. One was too strong (Nutrisse) and the other didn't last a week (Belle Color), so I went back to Revlon 50 ammonia free and my head is itchy again. Maybe the PPD?... maybe the MEA? I'm in a quandry over what to use! Maybe I've just been hitting my hair and scalp too heavy in the past 3 weeks, done 6 things to it... I am prone to dermatitis though

Question, you said one is softer and the other is opaque, doesn't the vol of the developer take care of that? i mean the developer is the one that lifts the hair colour right? I'm just confused why inoa should be less intense in the same colour range with majirel.
