Sadly, just like Valle Colorado the rich moved in, took over driving housing costs thru the roof and almost impossible for middle income people to live there.
The old "flavor" of Tragic City (arrive married, leave singke / arrive singkr, leave married was the "mission of the day" ) as we Coast Guard guys called it is no more.
I was stationed at the Airstation as an AD3 Grumman HU16e Albatross seaplane and Sikorski HH52A Seaguard amphibious helo Flight Mechanic.
Transferred to Miami Florida end of enlistment back to TVC.
Got divorced 3 years later no jobs due to two summers of near constant rain and 2 winters of extremely low show fall abd got custody of my youngest daughter and court approval to move back to Miami where you gotta be just plain lazy or dumb as a stump if you can't get a good job within days of getting here.
Now days it's actually cheaper to live in Miami.
Tropical fruits and standard vegetables are seriously cheaper here.
Plus at 67 I'm not really interested in shoveling snow or wearing 4 to 5 layers of clothes.
      Summer hear you acclimate to.
It's a matter of shade and near constant breezes from offshore, air conditioning and swimming in the ocean.

I know you said those axles hadn't been out in a while, and I'm sure you've removed way more than I ever have. Did a few on some dump trucks and road tractors. We always just smacked the axle right in the center a couple of times and it would "bounce" those cones or wedges whatever you want to call them, out far enough to stick a big screwdriver in the split to spread them and pull them right off. But they were never as Rusty looking as that thing.

In the UK we have places called MOT STATIONS where you have to take your bus, car etc each year to be inspected to find out any problems like rust broken spring suspension etc .If they find anything you are not allowed to put that vechile on the road until it if fixed. then you take the car etc back to get a pass so you can go back on the road.

Where I live in Ontario, Canada, only commercial vehicles must be inspected annually. Private ones only need certification at the time of purchase and transfer of ownership. The idea of annual inspections on all (private) vehicles does appeal (somewhat) to me, so long as the inspection would be at someone else's cost (like the Ministry to Transportation, who would not be tempted to dupe the owners into un-needed costly repairs) , and could be trusted to be fair and honest. Obviously, the owner would have to be willing to pay for necessary upkeep. If the annual inspection was failed, the owner would be obligated to repair or cause the repairs to be performed, then return to the Ministry for subsequent re-inspection and (hopefully) pass.
