What would you guys think about UoL Rekkles? I know Hylissang had positioning mistakes, but most of the games were spent trying to overcompensate for the discrepancy for Zven vs Samux as ADC's. Rekkles can not only play low econ ADC which is normal UoL style, but then also provides a 4th threat to complement the Top, Jung, Mid carry threats. As far as the top 6 teams, Samux is the worst of those ADCs. Compared to Zven, Rekkles, and Nuclear its a joke. Even the tier 2 adcs of Hans sama and Kobbe are better. Also Hjarnan would be an upgrade. Point is that a top team shouldn't have that weak of an ADC. As the #2 team in the region that is their biggest weakness that they now have an opportunity to shore up in the off season, especially with the new money that has gotten dumped into the organization. Do you think that an upgrade will happen (even if not of a known name)? And do you think given how Rekkles was throughout the regular season he would entertain UoL Rekkles, given that his off meta picks would be a perfect compliment for UoL.
I have three problems with UoL Rekkles. 1. It assumes Fnatic are dumb enough to release Rekkles or trade him, which isn't happening. They may be dumb enough to drop Kikis, but at least you can make an argument that he hasn't stuck around when he's not 100% comfortable and they have sOAZ to keep them going. There's no way they're going to get rid of the first guy to come within throwing distance of the MVP award since ReignOver/Huni left. Almost every team would be willing to take Rekkles if he was available, but it's hard to see a world where he would be. 2. Let's look at Samux's numbers so we're all on the same page: 5.0 KDA (5th), 58.7% KP (10th), 38 GD@10 (4th), 8.4 CSPM (T-7th), 460 DPM (7th), 279.0 EGPM (4th), DMG% 23.0% (10th), Gold% 22.3% (10th) There are some obvious trends here. He's not involved in as many plays as other ADCs, and when he is, he's not the main damage dealer. That makes sense when you consider the types of champions Vizicsacsi, Xerxe, and Exileh play. Their team compositions are designed around him being a third carry at best during team fights, and he does so regularly, which brings his DMG% pretty heavily down. They're also a pretty heavy skirmishing team on the top side of the map, meaning Samux isn't involved in as many fights as other ADCs would be. Most of his "bad" numbers come from UoL's playstyle and team compositions rather than his own failings. However, that also brings up his biggest strength. The guy takes much fewer resources than the other ADCs you mentioned. Rekkles in particular took 25.4% of his team's gold. If you're UOL, where do you cut that 3% of gold without fundamentally shifting your playstyle? That's a very precarious balance you'd be looking at, and I'm not sure Vizicsacsi is as good a player if you ask him to take those cuts. Finally, when you look at his laning numbers, he's actually quite solid. Despite UOL's constant cross map skirmishes and Hylissang's tendency to roam constantly around the map rather than stay in lane and assist his ADC, Samux still wins his lane more often than not. You have to be a very good player to pull that off. You can say Nuclear, Hans sama, and Kobbe are better, and they might be, but I'm not sure they'd be better in UoL's system, while I'm pretty confident Samux would be able to pop off more often if they managed to play around his lane. 3. Rekkles isn't the kind of player UoL like to sign. The Unicorns LOVE guys who put winning, growing as a player, and their family atmosphere over anything else. You don't need to be that way to be a great player, but it is a requirement of players who want to excel in the UoL system. It's hard to imagine Rekkles being his usual, confident self in a game where Vizicsacsi has gotten caught out a few times and Exileh is losing lane due to some poor skirmish options. Just look at what happened when sOAZ was tilting him off the face of the earth. To be clear, I think anyone not named G2 would be glad to sign Rekkles. He's an amazing player, and UoL would make him work. They'd even embrace his love of pocket picks and build compositions around letting that shine. Sheepy would have a field day making game plans around him. However, I don't think they'll have the option, and if they did, I think they're happy having a guy like Samux rather than a guy who needs to be a primary carry threat like Rekkles. I WOULD like UoL Kobbe or UoL Hans sama though. Both of those guys are team players who could be REALLY fun if their team would just let them loose. This has been "RUclips comments I really should have sold as an article somewhere given how long this ended up being".
Hey! Thanks for the detailed response. A few more questions: 1. Do you think UoL will make any roster changes? 2. Who do you think would be a likely a replacement for Samux? 3. Do you think UoL needs to also maybe look at a different support too?
I can't really answer #2, since it's reliant on who's available in free agency. No one could have predicted Maxlore would replace KaKAO on Misfits, because no one knew ROCCAT had let him out of his contract. We'll have to wait and see on that one. As for 1&3, my instinct tells me the only way they make a change is if Hylissang wants to become a full time analyst. They hopefully realize after this loss to G2 that the only way they'll climb this final hurdle is with a better, larger coaching staff. I don't think any one player can fix the macro errors and holes in their strategies that G2 exploited all series with their relatively simple disengage comps. If he does step down, however, pay close attention to VandeR and KaSing. They're veteran junglers who could step in on day one and be an asset to 70% of the league, and I'd be shocked if at least one of them didn't find their way to the LCS stage.
