I agree. JPJ is such an anchor to Led Zeppelin, so steady and present in giving a backseat structure and skeleton to the music, you can forget he is arguably the most compete musician in Zep. I can't count the times where I have heard somebody give the mandolin credit in this song to Page. My favorite band EVER!

From 1971 , which is when this was released , the "California Sound" which was epitomized by bands like Crosby Stills & Nash ( & Young when he'd drop by ) , The Eagles from their early days , Jackson Browne & Linda Ronstadt as well as Fleetwood Mac's first album with the Buckingham & Nicks combo being that bands new additions . "Going to California" fits very much in with the sounds of those artists from that era . Love watching you fall in love with Zeppelin . It does someone who grew up with this music see it pass along to appreciative ears 🙂

"Like a dream." Very good description: it IS dreamlike, the gorgeously dripping notes, Robert's "soft voice" gently telling of unrequited love. Jimmy and Robert were in love with the epic folk singer from California, Joni Mitchell, because of her talent and her beauty. This song was for her. She greatly admired Zeppelin, but never dated any of them, lol. It's not surprising to us fans that LZ "surprised" you here, because they DO do so many different kinds of music, and always with excellence. Glad you liked their softer side as well!

    • @vlj1133

Imagine when she hears D'Yer Mak'er (reggae), The Crunge (funk), Hot Dog (rockabilly), Carouselambra (ummm...?), Black Mountain Side (Celtic folk), Tea For One (jazzy blues), Gallows Pole (Gaelic traditional), and Achilles' Last Stand (prog metal). That much diversity will make her head explode.

Ive been hopelessly addicted to reactions of all kinds for about three years now, & reactions, to me, are 99% about the facial expressions, which show the emotion that the art, a song, or a film, or even a comedian, conjures up in people, becuase the face says it better than words ever could....anyway, this was a beuatiful reaction, just gorgeous...i was only born in 1976 too, so i still had a year to go before i was even on earth when this performance bappened, but i first heard zeppelin, & got into zeppelin as a 12 year old in 1988, & it was the album that this song was on....& just to see a young person react so soulfully, in these increasingly souless times 35 years later?...its a beautiful thing...thank you. Liked & subbed (if there was a "love reaction" to do on youtube, i would have done it, but, i could only "like" the upload, ha).

  • @DianeLake-sw3ym

This is why Zeppelin is the icon of bands. The Goats.
You have a group that delves into many genres. They do hard rock, middle eastern sound, acoustic and folk, instrumental, English Middle Ages, even fun ditties like Boogie with Stu. They are extremely diverse. And the subjects range all over the place.
Then you have the instrument virtuoso in John Paul Jones who plays mandolin and other guitars, bass and keyboards. You have the guitar Goat in Jimmy Page. And the vocal range and beautiful voice of Robert Plant. And while not featured in this song, you have a drummer who has been more influential since Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich of the Big Band Era in John Bonham.
This band is so deep and intricate. Many bands have tried to copy them but, are so superficial and unable to achieve a 10th of what Zeppelin does. They piddle around in mindless songs about girls and being on the road. They have nothing to say or really contribute.
Led Zeppelin is the monster of all rock bands and for a reason.
They have substance, they are musically gifted and are heads above any other band that came after them.

This could be a good start with a Pearl Jam journey.
Pearl Jam is a power rock band formed in 91 and was first put into the "grunge" scene cause most of the group members are also from envoronment of Seattle (like Nirvana).
    Why do I mention them?
One of their great song is a half cover of California Hotel - it is called "Given to fly". There is tons of live versions of Pearl Jam out there. Maybe you wanna start with the version of 2000 because there is really cute beginning where the singer of Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder) is interacting with a woman who is doing sign language.
But anyway - thanks a lot for your reactions 🙂
