How Laundry Used To Be Done | Doing Laundry With A Washboard

- This is a dry cleaners demonstration on how laundry used to be done, you know, with WASHBOARDS!!!
Overall its a pretty straight forward process:
1) Get your washboard, running water, laundry detergent bars, and dirty clothes
2) Work in your laundry bar into the soiled areas of clothing and then rub on washboard
3) Rinse until the product is gone
4) Dry
Keep in mind that lotsssss of people still do laundry this way. Most of us are very very lucky that we’ve grown up with modern machines and products; however this is not the case for most people.

Happy cleaning :)
In Brazil we have sinks made of stone with the washing board already in it, one side is a big tank and I do miss it so much.
I want one
Never in a million years I thought I'd be gladly watching videos about laundry.
With how expensive our buildings laundry is and the fact that the machines only take quarters I’ve been seriously considering just starting to hand wash our clothes
Similar situation and I also hate shared laundry facilities.
I hand wash the easy stuff like leggings and summer dresses. Bath towels, socks, etc still get done by machine. Has cut my laundry trips in over half. I recommend it.
My nicer clothes have stayed nicer, too. Hand washing delicates keeps them in better condition.
I used to hand wash in my bathtub when I had an apartment. It was faster and less hassle than lugging everything across the campus. If they were done every night it wasn't bad. Just became part of the routine like showering was
It takes a lot of time. But if you have the time and arm strength, it does save some money.
It was pretty common to wash shirts, blouses and delicates by hand, and not too long ago. The old top loaders didn`t always have a delicate cycle. Modern detergents make this pretty easy too.
There are pretty good compact washing machines too. The ones that are worth it are the type used in caravans and similar, they do a good job. Black&Decker has a top loader, I think Camec still have a pretty good front loading model. It is worth searching a bit for the best models. LG has a compact model too. There are lots to choose from if you search a bit.
Makes sense if you only have two pairs of clothes and 30 minutes of free time with clear dry weather, less so when it would take 3-4 hours for people to hand wash a family's worth of clothing once a week.
The way he said bucket.. i was waiting for the mop… NOW GET A BUCKET AND A MOO FOR THIS WAP. lol 😂
Im here for the short shorts 😂❤
This is what I was looking for, too😂😂😂😂😂😂
Haha me too
🥵🤤

My boy looks kinda hung not gon’ lie
You forgot to tuck. 💅
Got a lot of faith in those plum smugglers my dude lol
now im in love
Bro is packing 😂
Dude is about to bulge out of his shorts😅
..... it's rude to point too....
😂😂😂
Not really. Where are the balls?
I grew up in the Caribbean doing it by hand, no washboards.
You didn't have a jooking board? In Trinidad, our laundry sinks come with corrugation built into one of the sides
@@chrisz7494 no, I did not have one in St lucia.
Yes and make squashy noises 🇹🇹
Could u explain how u used to do it by hand? Did u use a brush to rub in the soap bar instead of the washboard? (Tryna learn about this stuff for a study).
Thanks for the wonderful video.. people are going to be screwed when the power grid fails if they don’t learn these things lol 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
I still hand wash a lot of things. They last longer. There are still proper enamel wash tubs & metal & glass washboards available if you look
Then the mangle (wringers) came along. I still have my 1966 Maytag wringer washer.
Loved the view 😮
boarding school memories. Hand washing everything lol thank God I’m loaded now and I can afford a washing machine 😂😂😂
Cringe
I know I’m not the only one 😂🏀
Nope, you ain't
Nah you guys are the only ones, b4 u mentioned it i didnt even thought of thinking to look there. Fkn creeps man
Haha 🎉
The fact they used to do this to all their clothes and they held up really speaks to how good the quality of clothing used to be
Most regular folk had 2-3 presentable outerwear outfits, these were aired and spot cleaned between full washings, which wasn't very frequent - a few times a year. Undergarments were much simpler, and more fragile in their make, but were also washed more frequently, weekly washing of these items was very common, and as such didn't last as long as outerwear, which could, with some mending and maintenance, last about 20 years.
I like to rub the soap on the board before scrubbing the clothes it helps the suds :)❤️❤️❤️❤️
Dang, when I was in the peace corps I did all my laundry by hand and wouldve killed for a washboard, lol. I would daydream that someone back home would rob a Cracker Barrel or something and mail me one.
😂😂😂
My mum used to wash towels and sheets by this method. Every item was spotless. Arms of steel.
Wash boards and my wringer washer clean so much better than the standard washer. My socks look brand new. I can't believe all the leftover soap that was left in my clothing. Crazy!
Why is this so satisfying
It looked at me first 😏
That budgie is well trained
My kindergarten teacher taught me this! I’ve never used the skill, but at least I have it!
Nice moose knuckle 😊
I have one of those old fashioned glass wash boards. Using it as decoration in my laundry room. With my new 2023 washer and, dryer that I can’t stand
I hand wash & air dry pretty much everything I wear except for jeans and winter clothes. Saves me the trip to the laundry machine downstairs in the winter and also money lol.
The glass washboards are for delicates. The metal or wood runged boards are for regular and heavy clothes.
more of these washboard demonstration videos please! maybe with different kinds of garments and troubleshooting tips and tricks !
heck yes! I got you
@@jeevesnyhey sorry I made a super long comment but uh… shorter question. In your professional opinion, Is soaking clothes in soapy water in a bucket 🪣 for 4-6 hours to then hand wash bad?? Thanks.
I had my husband build me a lavadero. Its a cenented washboard sink this a faucet and a place for soap. Very rural Mexico of me.😊
Wow! 😮😊
The print goes crazy 🥵. It’s so thick
So everyone was really watching him wash?
I get u 😉
Wait, what was the video about? 🤣
The man spread is everything 🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♂️🧟♂️
Them legs though... ➗
I enjoy this video. I never thought about doing this. I actually thought these were extinct. Like an old thing from the past that just went away.
You should do a video on washing and drying Lululemon clothing.
Ngl I have some items that the machine just isn't cleaning well enough, like socks and oiled rags I use for seasoning pans. I might get one of these.
Sometimes, you just gotta do the job yourself
We have that issue with our washing machine. We have to let the clothes soak in it for a while just like we did hand washing.
If you play the clip on repeat, you'll notice this guy is showing you how to use washboard. 🤭
I'm from Mexico and my house has one of those stone sinks with a built in washing board (like the one a Brazilian fellow mentioned here)
Not gonna lie: reading this comments it's kind of wild for me, what for some is 'old tools and technology' For me and nany others is just a normal Tuesday afternoon for me lol
Its good for emergency situations, like the black out of 2003.
Nice shorts
A review of all these new ai washing machines would be interesting and helpful
it was helpful
Good idea, but that’s a weak ass mechanical motion hahaha. The wring was the icing on the cake 😂
Omg. You sr, taught me that washing is not a mundane choir. Washing is a science and an art👏👏👏👏
Im glad you also think this way
I still use the washboard in my washing pool/sink with a hard soap.
Most clothing sinks/pools still have the ridges of the board integrated and i definitely clean by hand, at least in specially soiled clothing, like things with grease, blood or mud.
As a kid, if we got grass 🌱🌱stains on the knees of our pants, from school at recess, we had to use the scrub board and Fels Naptha soap to get them out 😅
Developing n underdeveloped country we use brush its acts fine
I have one of those in my kitchen for the tea towels
I'm sure all moms out there w 3 kids will b doing that
STAT😊
If you’re actually doing this, kudos to you!
As a college student, i am forced to do my laundry just with no washboards (because i cannot afford em ), so i just use my hands to rub the fabric aggressively with my knuckles.
In mexico we use big kinda flat rocks with ridges
I remember washing laundry with that wooden metal one
We used a big flat rock
i have one of those first wash boards
No sausages were harmed in the making of this video.
In my country, we do hand washing by rubbif the clothes wwith our hands. No washboard. Washboard sounds easier
I swear to God Tweety is fukn stating straight at me👀👀
I used to do this until we moved
Can you test Ariel powder detergent for your next detergent review? It’s very popular in Europe, Mexico, and other parts of the world and I’ve heard it rivals Tide and other A-tier detergents.
Not gonna lie - this is kinda hot to watch, idk why though
Um, hello hes showcasing the moose knuckle like a mofo.
I just showed this video my bf and he thought I was subscribed for the hotness.
But I'm here for the laundry tips
@@bonniestar7583 ha...
We do this without that fancy board
What do you use?
Yes please
Bruh is smuggling a sausage in his silkies lol
So we had a glass one when I was growing up and my nana told my mom if she ever heard my mom made me use it to wash clothes she was calling the state 😂😂😂😂😂
Hii. I have a stuffed animal that I haven’t cleaned in years. Can I hand wash it or can I put it in the washing machine?
My mom used to use this
Do more of these videos in that exact outfit 😋
Can i ask how do washboards clean our clothes? Like what is the explanation why we use washboards.^^
I just came here for the guns. 💪 💪
Habibi come to India..... We will teach you how to wash clothes on river banks...... 😂😂😂
So this is where the term washboard abs came from? Look at all the ridges on that board!
Yes
it's very distracting, I like it
Cool😂😮
Um 'mechanical action ' 😉 😜
We are still using it for white clothes 😂
I never knew the top bit was for bar soap! is this more damaging to fabric than machine washing, since that is primarily fiber against fiber, instead of fiber against plastic/metal? or is it comparable?
There's a reason that delicate garments come with "handwash only" instructions.
🥚🥚
Still use my wash board for my intimates 🇯🇲
👀👀 yum
I hoped to see his washboard abs 💔
Whose horse is that
Oh my goodness... It was hard to actually wash
.. I mean watch the washing I mean
.. you know ... Fml😅
Why is he so 🥵
I'm sure every Nigeria and literally every African is watching thos video with utmost confusion.
I mean don't y'all know how to wash by hand?
Tweety
Hahaha I have a metal box that does this, what a waste of time.
Mechanical agitation. Not action.
wey itu mangkok beling buat sop
That's not how you wring
“Used to”? Sigh. Americans.
Used to??😂
I would appreciate it if you could stop using my _abs_ to do your laundry on. Sincerely, Zack Efron
The process is nice but the bulge is better !!
Could do without the subtitles
on this one😅
Wait… how do I do it again? 👀
Um reconsider trousers vs shorts next time.
Get fame anyway you can I guess.
