How Laundry Used To Be Done | Doing Laundry With A Washboard

  • This is a dry cleaners demonstration on how laundry used to be done, you know, with WASHBOARDS!!!
Overall its a pretty straight forward process:
    1) Get your washboard, running water, laundry detergent bars, and dirty clothes
    2) Work in your laundry bar into the soiled areas of clothing and then rub on washboard
    3) Rinse until the product is gone
    4) Dry
Keep in mind that lotsssss of people still do laundry this way. Most of us are very very lucky that we’ve grown up with modern machines and products; however this is not the case for most people.
For more laundry tips and tricks throw me a sub! You can also find me on TikTok and IG @jeeves_ny
    Happy cleaning :)

With how expensive our buildings laundry is and the fact that the machines only take quarters I’ve been seriously considering just starting to hand wash our clothes

Similar situation and I also hate shared laundry facilities.
I hand wash the easy stuff like leggings and summer dresses. Bath towels, socks, etc still get done by machine. Has cut my laundry trips in over half. I recommend it.
My nicer clothes have stayed nicer, too. Hand washing delicates keeps them in better condition.

I used to hand wash in my bathtub when I had an apartment. It was faster and less hassle than lugging everything across the campus. If they were done every night it wasn't bad. Just became part of the routine like showering was

It was pretty common to wash shirts, blouses and delicates by hand, and not too long ago. The old top loaders didn`t always have a delicate cycle. Modern detergents make this pretty easy too.
There are pretty good compact washing machines too. The ones that are worth it are the type used in caravans and similar, they do a good job. Black&Decker has a top loader, I think Camec still have a pretty good front loading model. It is worth searching a bit for the best models. LG has a compact model too. There are lots to choose from if you search a bit.

Makes sense if you only have two pairs of clothes and 30 minutes of free time with clear dry weather, less so when it would take 3-4 hours for people to hand wash a family's worth of clothing once a week.

Most regular folk had 2-3 presentable outerwear outfits, these were aired and spot cleaned between full washings, which wasn't very frequent - a few times a year. Undergarments were much simpler, and more fragile in their make, but were also washed more frequently, weekly washing of these items was very common, and as such didn't last as long as outerwear, which could, with some mending and maintenance, last about 20 years.
