Not exactly historically accurate to squeeze 10,000 Sardaukar out of various medival lords in the 1100s, but fuck me if it wasnt cool.
LMAOOO
Yeah the troop numbers are way overinflated in CK3. Even the strongest emperors would have trouble getting 10000 men and supplying them.
@@WaterZer0 At least, outside of China.
In China, an emperor gets a bit of dust in his eye and 10,000 soldiers die for nothing.

man i love the small history lessons along with the gameplay, probably my favourite thing about this channel
You have a claim on Ruthenia because the most common theory on the origin of Agatha, Edgar's mother, is that she was a daughter of Yaroslav the Wise of the Kievan Rus. Interestingly, if that's true, it would make Edgar a nephew of Hardrada, Andrew I of Hungary and Henry I of France, who all married daughters of Yaroslav.
Connections like this make it all so fascinating.
Huh... isn't that interesting 🤔
I always wanted to play this character since in some cases he has the best claim when it goes to inheritance. The adventure route itself is the best solution as well. Though when I play William, I usually make Eadgar at least the Duke of Wessex just because he gets some ancestral lands.
Aelfwine would probably have the best claim, but he wanted to be a priest. (You can still have him chosen if you use the game rules though)
@@derekskelton4187
Wait, what do you mean? Which game rules?
Can I add him to my court, and then push his claim?
The reason why Harald Hardrada claimed he had the right to the English throne is that supposedly Edward the confessor in 1051 claimed him as his heir via a line of overlordship via Haralds ancestor being Cnut so he had duel claim to the throne being named "heir" and having claim via the line of Cnut
It was also because of what Laith was referring to, King Harthacnut of Denmark (future also king of England) and King Magnus I of Norway made an agreement in 1038 that whoever died first would succeed to the others throne. Harthacnut died first but the English throne was taken by the West Saxon line of Edward the Confessor. When Magnus died Harald Hardrada became king of Norway and then started claiming to have inherited a claim to England via that agreement between Magnus and Harthacnut. Not a very good claim, but none of the 1066 claimants claims were very good. Still personally think Harold Godwinson's was easily best if we don't count Eadgar but thats neither here nor there!
Anyone who conquers the kingdom is the king. No claim needed. Its not CK.
Harald was a vastly accomplished professional warlord. He had already squeezed more water out of his socks than his rivals Harold or William ever sailed over.
Harald was unlucky to be surprised at Stamford Bridge (his army didnt even have their armor, Harold's did), and worse: while alive during the battle, he was outnumbered roughly 2:1.
A third of his force arrived only after the battle was already lost. But still attacked, despite outnumbered 3 or 4 to 1. And then they lost, again. A kind of heroic. To be expected from vikings en route Valhalla.
In these conditions it is remarkable that the 15,000 English lost 5,000 dead; and that NOT all the vikings were stackwiped. (Probably 90% were killed though as they took fewer than 30 boats home after arriving in 300.) As it was that battle was more deadly than the Normandy beaches on D-Day and with no bullets or artillery. (All close range even the lethal arrows.) More than 10,000 of the 20,000 combatants died. In comparison, D-Day was "only" about 15,000 total casualties ie including wounded out of more than 200,000 overall soldiers in the battle... so thats avout 7% casualities and less than half that is KIA (say 3% of total participants). Stamford Bridge was morelike 50% of total participants. 1/3rd of the English and 80% of the vikings.
This one battle at Stamford Bridge turned out to be decisive for world history. A few days later when Harold's missing 5000 men weren't at Hastings... so they lose... and here we are. A thousand years of chronic foreign wars and chronic civil wars later. England was unlucky to be conquered by the Normans; and the Scots, Welsh, and Irish and arguably half of France even moreso. It all could have been ao different.
Interesting to do the whatifs here with the aethling. Agatha of Kiev another. Joan of Sicily probably the next biggee?
@@irtnycwas england unlucky to be conquered by the Normans? Honestly it eventually made the kingdom richer. The Irish Scottish and Welsh though, that I'll admit, did suffer from the rise of the normans
@@irtnycviking cope
@@Kornilovungreat It made the SOUTH of England richer. The North of England was utterly sacked in the "Harrying of the North". the Domesday book tracks how Northern lands lost 75% of their value. To this day the North of England is poorer than the South and if you have a Norman origin surname, you have a significantly higher chance of being from inter-generational wealth.
I don’t think there is a single person who doesn’t want the history lesson. It is entertaining as heck!
Laith: Skip to here to avoid the history lesson
Me: No, I don't think I will
I started a game with him with the intention of working my way up to King from count. But William won the war and immediacy granted me the duchy of Mercia(my lieges duchy) which put me in the position where all I needed to do was wait until he was gone to declare war for the kingdom of England(since i already have a claim)…. Wasn’t a smart decision on his part. I just abandoned the play through after that.
This character’s father would have been a cool adventurer play through had that been possible.
Edward the Exile was born the year Canute took over. Canute sent him and his brother Edmund to Sweden/Norway to King Olof’s court (there were two king Olof’s at this time and the land borders are not like they are now so we’re unsure which one) to be murdered, however, Olof was on good terms with their father, Æthelred the Unready who helped baptise him and so spared the children. We do not know if Edward and Edmund stayed in Sweden until it was conquered by Canute in 1028 or were sent away to Kiev or Hungary immediately. We’re also unsure as to whether or not the brothers went to Hungary first, and then to Kiev, and then back to Hungary, or just directly to Kiev and then Hungary. What we do know is that they were in Kiev around 1030, when they met and befriended another exile, Andrew of Hungary, which they then travelled with and helped him reclaim the Hungarian throne in 1046.
Also, we’re unsure on whether or not Edward’s wife, Agatha was from Kiev or from Hungary or from somewhere else. In this game, they claim she’s a Rurikid but there are other claims that state she’s of two different noble Hungarian origins being a relative of the Holy Roman Emperor. It’s a bit of a mess. That’s the problem with all these exiles, they were not exactly the best at documenting their exile lol
Yay history lessons! I love learning more of this, because I didnt know much of the Harrying of the North. I knew that William attacked the northern part of England after he defeated the Norwegians and the Anglo-Saxons but I never quite knew why. You could also do something like this with El Cid and take over a part of Spain for yourself. 😄
The neat out of context quotes:
"I accidentally killed my mother nooo! Oh well 💁"
"Spices? Hell no, I conquer England to get our bland food back"
"Now my nephew is King of Pomerania, bad thing is hes stupid"
Just learnt about this guy yesterday from my little sister, good timing, Laith!
He was King appointed by the Witton after the battle of Hastings, but soon after abdicated in order to let William be King
Well, he tried to seize the realm several times through rebellions, but old Will was incredible at crushing rebellions.

I love historical and gameplay
I like your balance of history and gameplay mate . Well done ,great video 👍💯
Just adding some historical notes;
William claimed the throne as he was cousin to Edward the Confessor (the last Wessexian king of England) via Edwards' mother Emma of Normandy.
Edgar was the grandson of the last previous Wessex king Edmund "Ironside", before the Danish kings but was still a minor in 1066 so was more of a figurehead at the time than having any real backing from the Anglo-Saxon nobility, especially as his father had only returned from exile in Hungary in 1057 with nothing but their name, only to die shortly afterwards.
That being said, the House of Wessex continued in a royal sense due to Edgars' sister, who became Queen of Scots, and her daughter, Margaret, married Williams fourth son (but only the second who lived to adulthood), Henry, who became Henry I of England.
Maybe you can do one with the medici family
Godwin, who started the Godwinson house, has been portrayed pretty well in Vikings Valhalla in my opinion
Not the best historical figure that has been portrayed, but still, pretty good
Cool one. Started nearly the same role-play a while ago but somehow instructions were unclear and I became the Outremer Emperor after making an alliance with Gengis Khan through marriage? God I love CKIII. Also more of these would be awesome. You can actually in full-vanilla play Rollo of Normandie as an adventurer if you start in 867. His camp is somewhere in Sigurdr's realm. Cool additions came with the last couple of updates, definetly improved the game since the Plagues.
Love this video concept, a historical based playthrough with a few fun facts along the way, hope to see more!
Easiest King of England run I had. Picked Edgar after I learned of him, first time ever, Hardrada won out over William the Conqueror, made me the Duke of Mercia, and was immediately elected King by the Witan when Hardrada died.
I really enjoy when you fit in history lessons into your videos
I would love more videos like this. I love the historical aspect, really adds something to the challenges and the video
4:09 Akschully Edward the Confessor was a cousin of William the Conqueror
First cousin once removed, akshully.
William the bastard's great-grandmother Gunnora is Edward rhe confesssor's grandmother. They're a generation apart. Makes sense right?
He was a cousin because his aunt was Edwards mother. That doesn't make him have a claim in any monarchical inheritance system I can think of
@@mappingshaman5280What does give me a claim is if I sail over there with thousands of men to take it.
I never knew Edgar was an account. Hope he wasn't empty!
I enjoy the history lessons. Its part of the reason i enjoy CK3 so much. Keep the history rants up!
This has always been my favourite campaign in CK3, every new update I give it another go
I like these historical videos. I wonder if you could do a historical thing that somehow also takes place over multiple lifetimes. Dunno how that'd work exactly but yeah
You know what's hilarious? The campaign as Eadgar can be ridiculously easy at times. Once, I conquered 16 counties in a matter of 15 years. I conquered so fast and hard, it crippled my economy (too many holdings). Couldn’t get a duchy because of a strong hook, but through luck (and A LOT of murder schemes) eventually became king of England. Was literally too easy. And now there's actually an optional setting that ALWAYS makes Eadgar king. It's too easy at this point.
well tbh.. 16 countieis in 15 years means you must have struggled to do it, or you're bad at the game lol
@@eroWardhanac I figured that was implied by their next sentence
I don't think you understand what “Easy” means. An easy campaign would be using that “Abduct = Win Free War” method to take back England cause you have a high intrigue. Conquering 16 counties in 15 years while being broke and unable to make a duchy cause someone has a strong hook on you, so you have to murder a bunch of people to get the throne back. Yeah, that's not easy! I can mentally picture you as the Sweaty Speedrunner meme in IRL😅
@@derekskelton4187 Then his sentence is contradictory. You can't say the campaign is easy, but then hard, but then easy again.
The Fragmentation of Poland could be a cool historical event to play, but I don't know if it's implemented in CK3
I would love it if you could make more of these, they seem like a highlight of your channel in the making
Really nice! My personal suggestion for a more historically-focused campaign… well, there was a very real chance at one point that a Iranian man of Khurramite (neo-Mazdakian Zoroastrian) origin could’ve become Basileus of the ERE. Look into “Theophobos,” and tell me that isn’t incredibly inspiring.
He converted before he had a claim
@ I said origin, not that he actively practiced it at that point.
He died before the earliest start date though
@ But he could’ve had a son, or even just someone with a similar origin.
Linking the crash course at the start is peak.
No need to apologize for the historical tangents their the best parts
0:08 what about Sweyn Forkbeard, Cnut the Great, Harold Harefoot (Harold I), and Harthacnut? Where these kings of England of the house of Wessex?

@@sweetpurple8812 Yeah it's a bit of a technicality you can handwave since real life doesn't exactly line up with the game. I'd agree they were kings of England, but you can kinda handwave it since it wouldn't have been their primary title

I'd love to see laith play himself in ck3
The Lockwagon thing seems to be a bug in name, you get a different upgrade that I can't remember in that slot. It may even just be like... somethings that acts as lockwagon but in a different part of the camp.
It seems this Eadgar was born too far west. If he'd been from Ipswich... Now that's a proper Edgar's County.
Interesting thing about Edgar Ætheling is he constantly fought in wars (including the first crusade) and collaborated with other leaders in attempts to gain his throne back, also (unlike most Anglo-Saxon kings) he lived till his 70s at least, and thus had even more things he did.
(He was also half Hungarian or Ukrainian)
Ooo please do King Nechtan of the Picts, who was wrongfully ousted by Kenneth McAlpin of the Dalredic Celts, in Alba. Return the Kingdom of the Picts
Definitely more historical character driven stuff!
You forgot the Danish claim to the throne.
There have been multiple kings of England not of the house of Wessex Laith (prior to 1066)
@Laith subtitles at 0:24 saw "drama" instead of "drum up"
Best vid in a while man! Going to do my own run with this guy I think.
This was fun to watch, and the historical facts as well!
There's a lot of history that he just causally talks about and gets wrong with the background to the events of 1066, just to run through it briefly:
When Edmund the ironside died he didn't leave it to Edward the confessor. He'd just fought a war against Cnut who he'd split England with and wh took over the English throne and married Emma of Normandy who was the wife of Aethelred the unready and Edmund's mother in law. At that point most of the house of Wessex left the country for Normandy because they had ties to the house of Normandy through Emma who was the mother of most of Edmunds siblings including Edward the confessor. Edward got the throne back when all of Cnut's sons who were his half brothers died and the last one left the throne to him.
Although Harold being shipwrecked and supposedly swearing a vow to be Williams casual was a part of the claim the fact he was related to Edward the confessor and a claim Edward wanted to leave the throne to him was a major part of why he thought he deserved to be king. That Cnut had been king of not just England but also Norway and some deals he had supposedly struck was a big part of why Harald claimed the throne of England.
I'm sure I got some of this wrong too but the video oversimplifies to the point of being wildly misleading.
Harald and William had the best claim, Harald through his grandfather who was King of England and in living memory, and William had been previously promised the throne by Edward the Confessor his cousin, Harold Godwinson himself even swore it to him, then betrayed his oath.
Who would not,its easy to kill people that didnt even landed, but then harald

As far as Norway and Hardrada goes, don’t forget that Tostig Godwinson was also with him
Laith please use the customize route button to get as many unique locations as possible, because if you do that as an adventurer then you can use a pretty op decision once you visit 48 unique locations and the decision gets buffed if you visit 60, and you just get experience which is better than no experience.

This was great, I'd love to see more!
edgar brings back memories from history in high school in england lol
Wondering why my buildings look blurry when zoomed in
It was the agreement between Harthacnut and Magnus of Norway that gave Hardrada the claim to England. Harthacnut was King in 1040 and son of Canute.
He made the promise to Magnus of Norway (Harold Hardrada’s predecessor) that if either one of them died without heirs their lands would pass to the remaining ruler. Harold claimed the promise of his predecessor gave him a claim.
However it is important to note that Harold’s own brother Tostig was exiled from England by Harold Godwin following Tostigs pisspoor administration over the Earldom of Northumbria. In response to being banished Tostig convinced Hardrada to invade on the grounds of this loose agreement claim so he could be reinstated as an Earl in England.
Hardrada likely would have never invaded without Tostig intervention.
Brotherly rivalry could be argued to be just as damning as Edward the confessor for the shitshow that was 1066.
I did this some months ago. Wonderful campaign, character and all that. Maybe I'll do it again with some mods and the new dlc some time. At the moment I'm hooked with the new administrative governments, the amount of political intrigue is insane
I think the whole Harald Hardrada invade England have to do with Tostig Godwinson bitterness against his brother.
It's is generally accepted that Canute was king of England as well as Emperor of the North Sea, so not entirely accurate to say every king of England was of House Wessex.

I wonder if there is anyone in CK3 that has blood relations to Cnut the Great since he did have the kingdom. I mean forming the North Sea Empire is a major decision in this game, and can be kind of difficult in the 1067 start date
That would be king Sweyn of Denmark. He does start with a claim on England, and historically he did make a try at it several years later, but he was soundly defeated.
