This Basic level "ChalkTalk" shows you how to diagnose an arrhythmia that is frequently missed. We review how to measure intervals and determine the underlying rhythm. Does it look like a normal sinus rhythm or not? Not all arrhythmias look like the textbook, and this is another great example of how even experienced ECG readers might make the wrong diagnosis. Learn how to correctly analyze arrhythmias that most people get wrong.
Dr. Nicholas Tullo, a heart rhythm specialist, will show you all the tips and tricks you need to read basic and complex rhythm strips and 12-lead ECGs.

I've learned something today. The R-R (ex. 68 bpm) rate multiplied by the number of flutter waves within the R-R will give you an approximate rate of the flutter waves (68 × 4 = 272 bpm). Thanks again.

@striae -- I'm glad you enjoyed the video. A discussion of etiology of this rhythm strip is way beyond the scope of this RUclips channel. I'll be discussing topics like that on my website once that site is up and running. Stay tuned!

Is that caliper a separate software app? Excellent videos BTW!

Thanks for the compliment. The calipers are an on screen graphic in Photoshop. It's not a commercially available product.

Hello Dr. Tullo. What tool do you use for the onscreen ECG caliper for performing the measurements? It looks very handy and may be helpful for my work. Thank you.

Kira -- I do all my screen work in Photoshop, so those calipers are just a graphic that I drag around the screen and resize. It's not a special app or handy gadget... sorry to disappoint.. -- NT

Dr. Tullo - Thank you for the response. No problem. Thanks for letting me know your "secret" tool. It's very well done in your videos. By chance, do you have any recommendations for an onscreen ECG caliper tool? I know the traditional physical tools are probably still the best, but I need to assess some digital ECG signals on my computer screen within a software and wanted to know if a computer-based tool exist. Thank you.

I don't know of any, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Sorry I'm not more helpful!

Thank you for your replies. No worries. Just thought it didn't hurt to ask. Your ChalkTalks are great. It's been helping me review some of the fundamentals again.
