This video popped up when I was researching how to manage FOMO while disconnect from media-driven social media spaces, and while video games aren’t my specific problem (the movies/tv and music industries are my thing) a lot of these principles very much apply. Thanks for your wisdom!
How cool! I thought this video would only be discovered by gamers, and it’s awesome that you found those parallels. Thank you for watching! I appreciate your time and attention, Jenna!
My mindset has similarly shifted when it comes to video games but there's an extra thing to mine. I'm removing the compulsion I feel to finish games I start. I don't need to hit credits and I don't need to do any or all of the side content. I will do what I naturally want to do, when I want to do it and that will naturally lead me to finishing or completing games I really like. If a game you set aside for whatever reason is stuck in your mind as unfinished, you just need to emotionally decide you are done with the game and you don't need to go back to it. I stopped trying to track a backlog as well since that kinda puts a pressure that these are games I "need" to play at some point. Also I stopped buying games unless I am going to play them right away. These kind of changes have made gaming truly about just doing what I want to do and not overthinking it so much, its supposed to be fun, entertaining, and immersive, not a goal or some achievement / checklist you need to tick off.
Hey ma... listen I'm 52 and have been playing video games since 1976, and I ignore most of everything on social media, especially when it comes to gaming. PLAY WHAT YOU WANT - You are liberated!! Doesn't matter when you play it. Maybe if you're playing online, it's different. I personally don't like online gaming as I get sick of teenagers firing racial abuse at everyone around them. Tried it for a year or so and stopped. The only three games I have ever bought when they came out were Red Dead 2, Skyrim and the original Resident Evil 2. What you are saying here makes absolute sense. So, play what you want when you want - they're not going away. If you don't like something, then that's fine. Rushing... I play every game to death because that's the way I like playing it.
"Good things come to those who wait." This is definitely true for video games. Sometimes, I'll buy a smaller indie title soon after it comes out, but the big games are usually a mess at launch. Wait a few years, and a complete version bundled with all the DLC and many bugs fixed will be available, usually at a discount. Furthermore, there might be a lot of mods to choose from. There is the added advantage of not needing the latest, most expensive hardware to get the best experience out of the game. This approach worked out great for me with Bethesda games. I didn't buy any of them until they were a few years old. Of course, this applies primarily to self-contained single player games. Multiplayer live services are a different story, but I don't play them and likely never will. Fortunately, I'm not really susceptible to FOMO, so I don't have to jump immediately into the latest video game, just like I don't feel like I have to acquire that elusive, absurdly expensive bottle of bourbon that everybody wants but nobody can find. (If you think the video game scene is frustrating, go down the allocated bourbon rabbit hole if you really want to see FOMO and frustration.) If you are susceptible to FOMO, I suppose the only way to mitigate the problem is to actively resist it and, as you suggest, limit your exposure to social media. My only real suggestion is to get old. When I was young, FOMO had more of an impact on me. Social media didn't exist then, but I would hear about the latest video games through word of mouth or from computer magazines, and there were games that I really wanted. The mere thought of waiting a few years to play the latest Ultima game would have been torture (at least until EA, the destroyer of franchises, sank their talons into Ultima and wrecked it). As I got older, the hold that FOMO had on my psyche loosened as various priorities in life, including education, work, and interest in other things, began to take priority. I've also never been attracted to social media, so I suppose that helps too.
Getting older might be what woke me up to this tbh, lol. I’ll be 30 in April, so maybe that’s it. Thank you for the insight! I appreciate you watching and leaving such a thoughtful response!
in general i feel like once you grow older you just stop caring about social media and the general discourse of the masses. when it comes to social media i do sometimes look at my recommendations and wonder "who gives a shit?" like luke stephens and asmondgold are nice guys and can be funny, but at the same time i fail to see why i should listen to their opinion. like why should i care about the opinion of some WOW streamer living in his own filth, about some dumb trend in the industry (that often doesn't even affect him since he only ever plays wow or souls games) or the opinions of some dude that basicly reads news articles to me? i can click on that forbes article just fine by myself. both never actually worked in the industry. i might as well ask what some random dude in the comments thinks about it. as i grew older i also completly lost interest in keeping up with the new games discourse online. like why would i give a shit what some dude on the other side of the world thinks? i will never interact with this person again. as far as i see it he is just some text on my screen that will never go beyond that. voice chats are a bit different cause i can sometimes more directly connect with that person and basicly move them beyond just being that "one-time" text on my screen, but that's not that common. most of the game related talks i have online now are usualy with other older gamers and mostly focused on our love for resident evil, quake, metroid, zelda etc. basicly old men bonding over their childhood. as for the other stuff, i can just not summon the care to debate someone over dumb manchild shit all the time. just remember to remind yourself once in awhile that these arguements online don't matter. you don't have to care about a 17 year olds favorite toybox and if it's the same toybox that you run your software on. you don't have to be right there at day 1 to talk about some dumb game either. just enjoy yourself.
Couldn’t agree anymore than I already do. I can tell you definitely aged wisely. Great perspective. Now I met a new friend 😂. Wish more people adopted this mentality. Also, I think older gamer talks are so underrated. I am quickly realizing how much I miss those and how much I took it for granted many many years ago when social media was brand new. I wish I could go back and ask those old timers more about their time as gamers. Even pen and paper gamers. But when you’re young, you think you’re the main character, etc etc.
I listen a lot and I don't get spoiled. And I don't chase trends and I accept not being on the new info. It sounds bragging but it is a better way of avoiding negativity
Great vid Ben! I lessened my usage of social media quite a bit unless I'm feeling sick, and the benefits have been wonderful! It can really suck you in and make you forget that people on social media are only a small subset of people!
Thank you, and thank you for watching! Absolutely. Twitter in particular is such a small community in the grand scheme of things, and with that comes a culture that encourages some seriously frustrating behavior.
I ABSOLUTELY agree with all of your points, especially with the 3rd and 4th. I personally I'm overcoming FOMO by thinking this whenever I feel anxious about missing out in a big release: "Will somebody EVER give a crap?", spoiler alert, no, no one will do. Also, the 4th point is something I can strongly relate to; luckily, I have money to buy tons and tons of games throughout the year, but that also means my backlog is always increasing. Yeah sure, sometimes I just buy games that I pirated when I was a kid, but like 60% of my library consist of brand new (with this I mean that they're brand new experiences to me, not that they're the last cry), unplayed games that would prolly sit there for years until I decide/have time to play time. Which btw, my current backlog isn't THAT big compared to some people's but mainly consist of RPGs and JRPGs lmao.
Man you echoed exactly how I feel right now when it comes to gaming and social media. I really want to get back to enjoying what I want to enjoy on my time or trying games that may not be on everyone’s radar.
Thank you 🙂. I got this video recommended by YT algorithm, so I'm first time here, but what you said was on spot. Maybe what I needed now. Firstly I need to say that although I don't know you and you don't even know of my existence I do care for you and all the other people out there. I want all of us to have fun and be happy 🙂. All the best wishes for you! I'm going to use this video as a start of what I was thinking to do for some time, as I share most of what you talked about. I have two places that make me feel FoMO and influenced, which are You Tube and Google News recommendations, the ones that are on my phone when I swipe left to right on home screen. I have no other social media I look at and I actually don't use PC for web browsing at all. With both YT and Google News I'm always afraid that someone will spoil my enjoyment with a game. It may be anything. Reviews, lists, titles and thumbnails with spoilers etc. Even positive opinions make me think while I play about what others liked about it instead of just enjoying my game. So although I do like gaming communities and seeing what others play and have fun with I'm choosing my own game play enjoyment over my enjoyment of watching other people enjoy games... Does that make sense 🤣? This is going to be my last YT video I watch. I'll try for a month and I'll see how it works. No swipes to Google News also! Wish me luck 😉.
I've been Facebook free since 2013. Other Social media sites like Twitter ( X) never grabbed me. So it's only Discord and steam when connecting with like minded actual friends. Made me almost FOMO free except when RUclips shows the degeneration of the Gaming industry. Now as a GenX gamer I watch these mega corps ruin what for most of my life was my relaxation and fun. Time to back to the yard and fields and enjoy nature.
Really loved the video man. I've started feeling this lately as I had played all the way through persona 5 royal for over a hundred hours but still fell into fomo for the crisis core remake and high on life. You're right about how fomo affects gamers like us, and having regular breaks to just enjoy something is great. Loved the format of this video man and hopefully we can sit back down for another spoilercast someday. Keep up your awesome work man!
That’s a great point! I literally haven’t started Persona 5 because all I can think of is how many other games I could play in that time. A lot of them, likely sub par experiences compared to Persona 5, lol. I appreciate you watching and the kind words! It means a lot to me.
This was great. I recently decided to quit twitter (not deleting, just not showing up) and it’s been nice to just quietly disappear. Follow up: I’m sure nobody will miss me. Many of my friends on there have since vanished (and I definitely miss them) leaving me alone. That was a few years back. Since then, twitter has only been miserable. Glad to see you figured out your path. Hope it’s going well!
Having kids and house really changed my mind on this. I have less time to play and less money for myself so just wait a year or two and get the same game with patches and dlc for 1/3 cost. Hell I just got metro complete saga for $9. I got cyberpunk for $9.
One thing that has happened to me repeatedly (and certainly to thousands of other gamers too) - I am playing a game that I really like, but that takes a lot of time (case in point, "Persona 5"), but then a new game appears that I really want to play, and don't want to miss out on, like "Spider-Man", and I dive into that new game... and never finish the other one. And then, maybe the same happens again just before I finish the second game, and I switch to another game again before having finished it. In the end, I have played a dozen games I really loved, but not properly enjoyed, and finished, any one of them. I think the statistics support this - I once heard that only a small percentage of gamers ever get to the end of the game they play.
I myself don't really feel the need to keep up with whatever new is coming out on the market, the only games that came out last year that I played were Sonic Frontiers and Overwatch 2. Although I am a victim of rushing through games just to get to the next thing for no valid reason. Recently I finally started playing through the Devil May Cry games. I completly rushed through the original DMC and DMC2, whenever I was stuck I caught myself looking up guides and walkthroughs in the middle of me playing the actual game and I'm pretty sure it killed my enjoyment of both games beacuse I took my sweet time with DMC3 and now I'm doing the same with DMC4, and what do you Know, I'm having an absolute blast with these games.
To only buy Overwatch 2 and Sonic Frontiers last year shows some serious restraint, lol. I applaud you for that! Rushing through games is the most frustrating part about gaming culture, imo. I’ve caught myself feeling like I need to have these all of these experiences under my belt, but literally could not tell you why, lol. Nobody is checking my punchcard to validate my gamer cred, and I’ve honestly never felt compelled to play Ocarina of Time. Nevertheless, i feel like I need to play it and I need to hurry up and get to it. Thank you for watching! I appreciate your time and attention, Silvurrr Boi.

I struggle with wishlisting so many games in the moment thinking they look interesting, then forgetting about them by the time they release. Or playing a lot of older games despite me personally not enjoying sitting at my laptop to play on emulation. I dont know what it is but when I only get genuinely legitimately excited for 1 new game and another remaster/expansion of an old favorite I find something is wrong and go straight to youtube to look for answers and just end up spending hours there when im not at work. Going whole days not playing anything but watching people be negative on youtube. It sucks and I just want to go back to enjoying games the way I used to. The first one on my radar doesn't come out until October, and the other comes out next year. So that means I should have plenty of time to explore and broaden my genre horizons like I've wanted to. At least that's what I think that means.
I really like this. I've made a list for myself of 20 games that I want, with 12 of them being on Game Pass. I haven't really consistently gamed on a console since Spring 2024...maybe early summer...and so with the possibility of getting a Series X for myself for Christmas, I'm looking forward to my self limited list of games that I know I'll love and take my time to enjoy.
I got a lot of free time on my hands a little too much if I'm being honest but at the same time, I'm trying to avoid FOMO, I will ONLY play a game day one unless if it is part a genre or series I really like and it looks insanely cool. But nowadays I wait, whether it'd be sales or buying at cons at getting lots of physicals at vendors. I also play lots of past releases too, I play games from every era all though my cut off date is seemingly 1996 since I'm a pro Playstation gamer and many games before the PS1 were 2D side scrollers and it's hard for me to care since 2D games come out in droves now, what even makes older 2D games so special? That and I covered every SNES game through Nintendo Switch Online in 2022 giving me less reason to go past 1996. With that said, I aim for a middle ground, I view video games like TV shows, every level beaten, story milestones or missions is basically like watching an episode and I tend to be focused on the main story since I view side quests like filler episodes in a pre 2010s fighting shonen anime or those random villain of the week episode in non anime. But yeah, I'm noticing more than ever with people saying they hate "Twitter" or "X" now and how much they hate Elon Musk and claim they are using Blue Sky when they come to X and use it anyway. When you view the internet as cult groups meets organized crime meets pro wrestling everything regarding fandom and communities become easier to accept. Just play games, watch shows, and watch movies then be on social media. Being on social media might singlehandedly be the least productive thing ever. I mainly just use X to rant about about bad internet statements and take notes to write for reviews.
You'd be surprised that most people hear about a game and buy it in impulse. Usually people buy a game in the first couple weeks then sales fall off until sales happen.
It's wild how a 140 game backlog seems peaceful. 468 just off steam on my backlog. More on other pc platforms (gog mainly, not nearly anywhere like that obviously though) I play on ps5/psvr 2 too, and have been with playstation since the ps2, and while I've pretty much abandoned the ps3, I have a ps4 backlog of having ps+ for years and just getting games throughout, and also my ps5 backlog, both physical and digital. Also been considering going back to the psvr 1 too to do a 1-2 experiences again that aren't revealed for remaster on the psvr 2 yet. Luckily I don't buy games day one, and don't really get expensive games ever bar psvr 2 must haves. Like I'll buy resi 8/4 remake style stuff for the vr, I bought gt7 for 30 foir the vr, etc. Luckily I'm a huge indie fan, so shorter games, and they are also quite fun. Also the reason twitter is even more of a cesspool now is because a lot of us DID leave, we are on stuff like threads now.
I gave up on modern gaming when I started to fundamentally disagree with game design decisions, and the audience had no idea what I was upset about. Perfect example: The Star Wars games. I grew up with the NES and forward, I've played 20 years of Star Wars games and watched them be refined into their ideal forms, as the tech would allow. Rogue Squadron is perhaps the best Star Wars flight based series ever, and one of the core concepts is that the outside the cockpit view is essential for better dogfighting, and better maneuvering in general. Not only does it allow you to see what's outside of your ship, but you get to look at the cool Star Wars ship you're flying the entire time. Yet I played a bit of Squadrons, and I was shocked to find there is no option for an out of cockpit view, not even in single player. Their excuse is that including it would harm the immersion and make multiplayer uneven, but it ruins the design of the entire game the way it is, and that's no kind of compromise. I could not stand playing it, it felt so wrong, so limiting, such a waste of time and resources. I quit in disgust, deleted it, and was very glad I had Game Pass so I had not spent any money on it specifically. But this pattern would be repeated over and over, in every game genre. Still within Star Wars, take Jedi Fallen Order. Maybe that's good combat by the standards of someone who hasn't played 20 years of Jedi combat games, but to me it is pathetic and inadequate in every way. Fallen Order feels like nothing but ripoff parts of other games stapled together with a Star Wars filter laid over it. Compare to my favorite, Jedi Outcast and Academy, games which I played online for years with no updates or dlc, just community made mods, a game which still has a thriving community even now, and it's just laughable. I didn't even finish Fallen Order, again leaving it in disgust, simply unwilling to play games of such a lesser quality. Breath of the Wild was the final straw. I hate every element they changed because it was popular somewhere else, Zelda has lost its identity and we have gained nothing in its place. Yet the audience cheers for every single one of these games, and to me they just don't know what they're even missing. So I never bought a Wii U or a Switch, nor any other console past an Xbox One, which has now broken and I do not intend to replace it. I am happiest with the design of the PS2/X360/Wii era and before, and I really have little desire to play anything released past that. It's just my preference, modern gaming design has passed me by.
The problem is, every big dev is trynna play safe with their cards y'know. Releasing a AAA game isn't like the PS1-PS2 era where most studios wouldn't go bankrupt if a project failed, but nowadays that's not the same. Hundreds of people could lose their job if a big project fails and isn't backed up by one of the three giants: Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft. And that's why I love such aforementioned era, everything was still fresh and many, many games were original to the bone and you couldn't find something similar in today's market, if any. Plus, they were mostly bug-free and ofc DLC didn't even existed back then so when you spent your money on a game, you could be sure as hell it was gonna be (for the most part) a compelling experience, while, nowadays, unless is an indie game we're talking about, you can never be sure, even with your favourite studios. Personally, FromSoft and Monolith dropped the ball hard with the last big titles but it's okay, maybe most modern AAA games aren't for me... Btw, I'm not an old fart but just someone relatively young that finds retro gaming way more fresh than modern (ironically, lol)
Maybe the game reviewer job is not for you, if youre not enjoying what youre doing its not worth it man,, play one game at the time enjoy them thats what theyre made for, it should bring you joy not stress
true so[ true i heate fomo because now i could not collect shante on switch because pirates curse is 300 plus . xenosaga ep3 is like 125 or 150 wild arms games on ps2 is like 100 plus i just emulate those on pc . thank god i was able too collect them all on ps5 i just missing shante 1 . pokemon game boy and advance and ds games are worth 100 plus now i just emulate . so yea i just try too get those games i just said one day i get them .
Fomo is not a problem, YOU are the problem if you csnt handel it. Fomo is a good tool used to get engagement fromplayers, if you cant handel it then ither dont play the game or re evaluate your life

What I’ve done recently to combat FOMO is I created a list of the top 20 games that I want to play the most out of my library and just commit to that.

Follow up:
I’m sure nobody will miss me. Many of my friends on there have since vanished (and I definitely miss them) leaving me alone. That was a few years back. Since then, twitter has only been miserable. Glad to see you figured out your path. Hope it’s going well!
Don't know how I found this video...but it was legit good. You're a breath of fresh air my dude!
Having kids and house really changed my mind on this. I have less time to play and less money for myself so just wait a year or two and get the same game with patches and dlc for 1/3 cost. Hell I just got metro complete saga for $9. I got cyberpunk for $9.
Top quality channel, subbed and hope
The algo treats you as deserved 👍

This was really relatable. Thank you for the insight.
And people often forget that youtube is also social media, and is the easiest way to get into the video game addiction fomo rabbit hole
Going through that same problem, very useful video.
i dont have social media since idk 10years and before that it was way less then when i started. now im 34y
Smart man. I was dumb and got hooked. Slowly dropping out of everything. At least I never got TikTok 😂
It's wild how a 140 game backlog seems peaceful.
468 just off steam on my backlog.
More on other pc platforms (gog mainly, not nearly anywhere like that obviously though)
I play on ps5/psvr 2 too, and have been with playstation since the ps2, and while I've pretty much abandoned the ps3, I have a ps4 backlog of having ps+ for years and just getting games throughout, and also my ps5 backlog, both physical and digital.
Because of fear of missing out whenever I get the final word on the battle pass, I just drop the game entirely until the next battle pass comes out
Maybe the game reviewer job is not for you, if youre not enjoying what youre doing its not worth it man,, play one game at the time enjoy them thats what theyre made for, it should bring you joy not stress
