I wanted a TD… it is GQ and Patrol… but I had no faith… you proved me wrong… great choice. IMO, I nicely tuned turbo TD42 is one of the best sounding diesels.: and reliable as hell!!!
Aim for reliability. Going slow on the tracks won’t require 300hp. A stock motor will be fine. Just go for 200hp and 600NM MAX otherwise reliability is questionable. It can do more but it won’t last 300k kms. Just a question what year is the motor? If the vacuum pump was on the alternator when it was in the guys car that you brought off then you have a good motor, if it was on the injectior pump than you need stronger rods, pistons, crank etc.
to make 300 you think they’re going to be reusing anything? and you seriously don’t think that donnelley engineering who have built many of tds don’t know that?
Good job Sam, TD’s are awesome if build right. The only thing I’d recommend is twin turboing it just so there is not lag. Still keep the boost only at like 20-25 pound but twin turbo is so it comes on faster
Agree but clean GQ’s are getting more and more popular.. people are realising what they have and rebuilding… seen more clean, fresh built GQ’s around in the past 12 months than ever… Mines clean and still original 👌🏼
The GQ I had was original and clean , and that’s after 22 years old, stop being so rude about GQ , beautiful vehicle to drive , only a tb42 , sl model and a carby motor. NEVER EVER let me down,
I'm broke but I drive a new f150 have a $100,000+ 1000hp 5grand toyota on a trailer and about to throw $80,000-$100,000 into a 2grand GQ, yeah Sam you are broke. 🎉
with the bellhousing u can drill a hole into the tb42 bellhousing for the td 3 bolt starter so u dont need to find another bellhousing and i believe all the ac stuff off the tb will work with the td42 if im not wrong
@@mitchellesplin2818having owned a TD for over 10 years. Agreed. I'm 98kw 300nm safely. Can't blow the thing up . Reliable as. Even my tuner agreed that anything beyond that is an unreliable grenade waiting to happen. Any tuner that says otherwise only wants your money in the moment n won't wanna know you after you blow it up n they'll blame the driving ability not the motor being sent to the moon
@mitchellesplin2818 that's what a small group on the internet would have you think. Yet the boys over at UFI have customers with well over that who have been beating on TDs for years without issue.. Ufi's shop car pushed out over 500hp and was beat on for nearly 9 years before the engine said no bueno.. So dialing that back by nearly half with the right supporting mods? Yea she'll be fine.
Fucken oath. Up the TD. The TD renaissance is back. More and more people are buying new blocks because of how good these engines are. Don't let the 1% of keyboard warriors and toyota fanboys fool you.. A well set up TD is epic, rock solid and drives really nice. Added bonus is they're one of, if not the best sounding diesels, ever, made and that's half the fun driving a 4wd.. big kid vibes. If you're planning on boosting it over 24 pound put in ARP head studs.. You'll have peace of mind beating on it with big boost if you have the head studs. Cooling mods: (because of omg kettle) just renew everything with genuine. You don't need triple core radiators etc.. Key components are genuine thermostat, a derk water pump (or nissan genuine) and ufi/qikazz upgraded fan. TD'S arent high performance motors but they can be set up to be more or less bulletproof around the 250hp/700nm mark which is a tonne of power and torque for a relatively light 4wd in comparison. Stick with UFI for turbo mods.. They know their shit, just look at the dark magic they conjured with their 500hp plus TD42. All in all you should set up the rig as a bulletproof tourer/workhorse with reliability paramount but as a bonus try and aim for the best sounding TD. There's something about the sound of a TD and if you can amplify it or get it even gritter and nastier that'll be epic.
First up. reliability, fuel economy, a little of power yes , but nNOT STUPIDITY , consistency in power, . My thoughts after 35 plus years of having a four wheel drive.
Yusssssssssssssssssssssssss!! Best decision ya made since the loss of the Naughty! Fck FTE the world Long Arm the World...!!!!!! Yussssss! 270hp, big NM, is a nice number, but fck the fuel economy, just keep it reliable! GU diffs btw, must have or its not spicy! You don't need another worlds largest most expensive ever insane PAPER WEIGHT !!! (sad as I am to say that about any 80s🤣) Go to town underneath without cutting out floors and engine bays! For something different I know ya a Superior guy and I run Superior in 90% of mine and Rampt is fast becoming my go to spicy spicy bits esp where SupE dont suppy what I need for my 80s! Nice to see you've brought the best possible motor for the Patrol. Nice to see you listened to me. Can't wait to hear it and see it.
Should have gone the 3.0…….
I have a feeling you will love the td42. Great choice 👌
Keep it practical and attainable, 200hp/600 torque
Great ep Sam - what a nice fella that bloke was! Fancy that old blue Nav in the garage...😅
300hp reliability in the same sentence that’s gunna want a billet crank in no time 👍🏻😎
As a proud td owner..even that won’t stop it from snapping
They still snap as well 😅

Unless it was a turbo blacktop then its the best of all
$20g later “ new liners , new head
oil squirters, Mayle pistons , Ross I beams, race bearings, balanced crank 😍

Make sure you upgrade the water pump to the upgraded brass water pump, standard one has like 10mm clearance between impeller and block
Good choice!! Probably the easiest conversation you can do from a tb42 👌🏼
Atta boy TD kettle’s represent. Nothing suits a gq as good a forklift engine. Ps: I have a bellhousing sitting around that needs using
my mate holds the record for TD 42, dyno shoot out made over 600hp at the wheels and bent the rods with over 60psi boost with compounded turbos
TB48 would be way way awesome🤣
270-280hp sweet spot, Enough fruit to have fun with it but not so much it goes throwing a toy out the cot.
Your gunna love it mate!!!

Calm down mate. No need for the built anger. If you don’t like it, don’t watch.
@@JustEnjoyLife88well said. A lot of people throwing shade on Sam lately. Like ffs no one forcing people to watch? Hahahaha
You can buy anything with a big enough credit card 🤷🤷🤷
Spending money doesn’t make you rich… quite the opposite.
I have a fair few parts for a td42 and also have a manual gq bell housing for a td42, if your interested let me know
250-300 hp would be ideal. I’m not a patrol fan, but I am looking forward to watching this build. Way more realistic and practical than the 80.

Mmmm winter range? Summer is closer than winter Sam lol
3 cups of coffee when the kettle boils 😂
😂😂😂😂
bloody hell i knew it was gonna be a td42 lmao my intuition is amazing
Best engine for the vehicle beast of a motor
As a replacement for the ngty40 this ticks the box 100%
Doesn’t matter what engine you use it will still look disgusting with that wrap 🤢
😂😂😂😂
A 1HD fte would’ve been awesome in there
Gonna take a wild guess at a barra... ik I'm late to the party
@samyoung would you rate the F150 for a touring set up?
Light to moderate 4x4 also.
Thanks
I think you drove past me today in the gq near Denham court nsw
Wanna see more of the 80 offroad Sammy!
Where's the 1vd-ftv 😢
Keen to see what you come up with this build big fella 👌🍻
Why would anyone one want to see a 1VD V8 cruiser engine
fit a 4.8 crank and turn it into a monster ..and a manualized re4
We may know some guys who know some guys that make the best intake tops 😅
Ayeeee 😮
2 grand for a TD42 in Australia seem expensive ? Try buying a 1KZ in NZ!
Dirt cheap
Bet it goes bang on the first track
Very unlikely there reliable as only have issues when push em hard with big power and blocked radiators
