  • Are you also annoyed by messages like:
"Get more security updates though Ubuntu Pro with 'esm-apps' enabled"
when you update your Ubuntu system in the terminal with APT? No problem! I'll show you 5 possible ways out and of course how you can get over it.
    Commands:
    Goto directory:
    cd /etc/apt/apt.conf.d
    Backup file
    sudo cp -p 20apt-esm-hook.conf $USER/Downloads
    Truncate file
    sudo truncate -s0 20apt-esm-hook.conf
    check empty file
    cat 20apt-esm-hook.conf
    redo upgrade command
    sudo apt upgrade
    Advert is gone!! :-)

I am fine with the adverts because they are not on my face (I don't have to click somewhere to close them) and they are not personalized based on my data. I use Ubuntu only on my work computer (Use Endeavor on my personal computer). So I don't care if it has pro and my company pays for security services from some other vendor (I think McAfee). I don't think there is anything wrong with Pro, a company has to make money in some way to pay the developers. There will, of course, be two classes, one that pays for everything and one that gets most of the stuff for free.

I see it similarly to you. The fact that Ubuntu Pro is a paid program doesn't bother me in the slightest. But I think the advertising format needs to be improved if it is to reach the right target group.

I don't find any wrong with Canonical's paid services. A company has to pay its employees and maintain its fixed assets. The only thing that is a relief is that they are not predatory like Em-Ess and do not show tons of pop ups or lock away essential features

I like what Ubuntu Pro is offering, thus I have no issue registering for it. That said, this is Linux for human beings after all, so there should be a simple toggle to turn on/off the Ubuntu Pro notification once and for all. It's that simple. Forcing this upon users without an easy way to turn it off goes against what Ubuntu stands for, and as such I expect this to be improved on asap. Ubuntu is not Microsoft or Apple. It's Ubuntu - Linux for human beings - Linux for the average Joe. The average Joe will not know how to perform the terminal steps seen in this video, quite frankly they shouldn't have to do any of this in the first place, and a lot of users are becoming increasingly hesitant when it comes to registering to services with their personal data (e-mail, name etc.), rightfully so. Love Ubuntu, been using it for decades now, but this has to be improved on. No way around it. Ubuntu Linux users deserve the freedom of having options and this is no different.

@@FossLinuxJournal Replies such as the one you just left doesn't make any sense. Ubuntu is a company. Believe it or not, they do in fact have to make money at some point. If the ad annoys you, just sign up for the service and don't use it. When someone says "Have fun with [insert subject], that is essentially like saying to someone, "Uh, I know better than you and how dare you disagree with me, in the most condescending way." Just because the 'community' doesn't agree with what Canonical is doing is totally irrelevant. You have top notch content, but please do not start posting opinionated videos as to 'warn us'...
