The Ibis Exie: this is why I ride mountain bikes.

A little mountain bike manufacturer based in Santa Cruz, CA, has had big dreams- to build carbon fiber frames here in the United States- and to christen the carbon facility they built from the ground up, the first model to be publicly available from that project is the new Exie. The Exie is a 100mm travel 29er frame, designed to be used with a 120mm 29er fork, and the frame with shock weighs a mere 4 pounds. That’s under 2kg!
A big thanks to Ibis Cycles for sponsoring this video! Learn more about the Exie here: bit.ly/IbisExie
The intended use of this bike is cross country racing and light weight trail riding. I have never ridden a modern cross country bike, and the smallest trail bike I currently ride is another Ibis- the Ripley AF, though it has a full 20mm more travel on either end.
The Exie was going to be a whole new experience. I figured what better chance than this to do “more with less”, and to spend nearly a week on the road with my moto and this here bicycle.
A couple months back, I picked up a 2014 Suzuki VSTROM 1000, which is a total “dad motorcycle”, as it’s considered an “ADV” bike, and if there’s one thing I love, it’s a spontaneous adventure with limited preparation, some flexible goals, and bicycles somehow involved.
I’m using a 2x2 Cycles rack: bit.ly/2x2Bike... (affiliate link)

Jefe, Wonderful video of a great adventure! You're a gifted story teller as well as rider. Thanks for this marvelous piece. Glad you made it to your kiddo's school in time to pick her up! Much love from your proud old Dad❤️
I "only" have a Ripmo AF, but it’s clear Ibis knows their stuff! Cannot wait to see what they put out in the coming years! Nice video as always Jeff!
Thanks Josh! Yeah it'd be cool to see more bikes come from that little facility. I have a bit of a wishlist, TBH!
Im Ibis for life. After 5 years, I'm still in awe and love with my Mojo 3. I've ridden both Ripley and Ripmo.
I think I want an Exie!
Jeff: "Hey there, didn't mean to startle ya."
Also Jeff: "You seen all the skeletons back there?"
That sounds like some discomforting small talk in the middle of the woods :)
looked like the results of a lot of poachers.
I appreciate you wearing safety gear on your Moto even though its really hot! Great video, love your style!
Thanks Aprill! I feel so lucky to be able to have folks that actually want to watch me ride my MTB, so that means my body is critical for work! As a result, it's ATGAT on the street bike. And heck, off road too.
"Steep" head angle... modern bikes feel so good to me since I started riding when 26" bikes had 71 or 72 degree head angles! I'm sure you're the same!
Me too Jake! My 26" wheeled Bontrager actually had a larger offset fork to make the head angle even twitchier!!!
I’m still riding a slack head angle 68deg. Kona Abracadabra with 160mm travel. This was the pinnacle enduro racing bike in 2013 . Now it’s a dinosaur put the slack at angle. My 2001 conus dad had a 68° head angle 150 mm or travel and a deal crown fork. It was actually my cross country bike at 40 pounds and a 40 tooth front chain ring. I wanted some slack with some travel for Trail riding
@@troyphillips1077 Is the Abracadabra the one with the little helper shock? The Magic Link? If so I had one of those in 2008-ish. It was so slack back then because my other bike was a Cannondale Flash that I think had a 71 deg HA!
Amazing riding as always. But man it seems like your self-filming and subsequent editing here is on another level. Nice work! You're a master.
Thanks for taking us along! As always, a great story wonderfully told. You definitely got me wanting to get out on a big adventure, thanks!
You should totally go do some silly adventure! It's a blast! Days ~2-3 can be hard, but then you get into the swing of things and it all gets much easier. Cheers!
I got a new Ripley AF this Spring and come from a background of mogul ski racing. Your "silly little riding" is exactly my goal for a ride style and why I gravitated to a short travel trail bike. Thanks for showing what proper skills can do in all terrains, and my daughter and I can't get enough of your videos!
He really is an amazing RUclipsr I’ve learned so much about biking techniques just watching him, and I think he is a really genuine guy I’m glad I found his channel
Nicely done, Jeff! You managed to keep me glued to the screen for the entire vid. Thanks!
Wow, thanks Radek! Glad you enjoyed!!!
Another great one, Jeff! And your Dad chiming in is priceless!
Hoping Ibis can catch up on the demand for their Ripley V4 Carbon, and that a V5 matching the AF geo will be forthcoming next year.
Good on ya, Ibis! Thanks again, Jeff!
Rule #1 = FUN!!
This video is a movie!!! Fantastic!!
Great video Jeff. I'm very impressed that you did all that on a motorbike, got all the footage, and somehow managed to keep all the batteries charged. 👏👏👏
Very cool bike from Ibis and what a adventure to take it on. Cinematography on point (great light/smoke), storyful editing/script construction and locations with character. Very nice, Jeff. Thanks for taking us all along.
Thanks so much Coby! Ive been busting tail the last week editing this thing together! Cheers!!!!
Exciting adventure! Great riding! Wonderful attitude! Awesome creativity! When I grow up, I wanna be just like you. Love, Mom
Definitely one of your best videos yet! Thanks for sharing the adventure - Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Taz!
I hope you do more videos like this! It’s fun to see someone with your riding style ride these old backcountry trails.
Jeff, this was a fantastic watch and well worth the hours it must have taken to edit and film.
Jeff kw. Everyone's favorite mt bike circus performer.. so fun to watch your style.
2 wheels were my first love. I'm married, but she knows that she's second. Great video, Jeff.
The man makes a video by himself that looks like it took a film crew of 6 or more. Incredible! Nice work Jeff!
So jealous of these great adventures. Hopefully I can be like you one day
Absolutely love my Ripley AF. Short travel trailbikes are perfect for 90% of the riding I do.
Ok has anyone seen Jeff ride this trail on a Big Wheel ,well me either BUT if he ever did I am sure I would have a overwhelming desire to buy one because Jeff can make every thing he rides look like the coolest thing ever ! Great job Jeff and I hope you had as much fun on this trip as I did watching this video .
Great video. The drone shots were a really good addition to the POV. It made it feel like more than one person was out there. When I ride my bike, I always try to emulate your style. I don’t do it justice, but it’s coming along. Please keep the content coming. PS. Good call going clips. That rear wheel was floating!
Man that is the best video I've seen that you've done....everything about it. The narration, the views, the edits. Great stuff. Your riding is just next level as always so that never hurts ;)
Thanks so much Jeff! I had a vision for this video, and the final product is pretty close to what I was going for. What's cool is that it's pretty authentic- without cameras involved, I'd love to make the same trip and ride all the same places.
@@JeffKendallWeedI can defintely see that. Looks amazing! I live in NWA so if you ever make it back down here, I would love to meet and hang out and ride with you. New trails opening all the time here ;)
That was a completely and utterly epic adventure.
watched most of your videos, I never saw you did so many jumps, that bike fits you well.
You have expanded my view on what a well-designed/built dual-suspension XC bike can actually do, dear Jeff!
Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines! #KeepBiking
That was an amazing story and an awesome short film. Thanks for sharing Jeff! 🌟
Thanks for watching!!!
Love the content I live in Monterey from aptos and my uncle and cousin work at ibis :) keep it up 👍
Probably my riding preference speaking…..really love your backcountry adventure videos. Well done!
Awesome, thank you! This has really turned into my favorite kind of stuff to do!
Best video yet.
Thank you Richard!!!
Amazing adventure, Jeff!! Thanks for taking us along!
18 people disliked?? Really. I love the content of your channel and this video hit two of my hobbies, ADV and MTB. Thank you for the awesome videos.
Amazing riding skills and videography. Subscribed!!
Loved the Flat vs Clips…
I love your review philosophy. The Rocky Mountain and this Ibis review are an excuse for you to find epics. Incredible riding in incredible landscapes. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Jeffe sweet trip awesome drone footage you really live in a great place for riding mtb and moto , glad you camped in the bears bedroom and not his kitchen ha ha .thumbs up from down under 😊😊look forward to the next one .
Someone needs to get JKW a unicycle. Jeff, This is now one of my favorite videos from you. Live the adventure, man.
Epic ! Love ur riding skills and style !
Can't imagine the time it takes to film and edit such a indept video! Top notch riding as always.
Thanks a ton! Yea I worked my tail off editing this over the last week.
@@JeffKendallWeed you sure nailed it as well!
I love the motorbike setup and the PNW......what a place! Excellent videos, good job.
the amount of self-production in this is insane!! you must have ridden each of those trails a few times to get those shots, if you've ever filmed a self-edit you know how much work it is! props!!
This!!! One of the best MTB videos ever. Keep after it Jeff. This type of storytelling with ride caming…it is awesome and plays to your strengths.
Great video, lots of fun to watch
Those wheels...😍 btw this production quality is great along with the music choices.
Incredible footage and valuable content. Definitely more subscribers should be in your future!
Thanks Peter!
Really enjoyed this video, Jeff. Keep up the good work.
This is badass. I’m demoing over the next couple weeks for my first big bike (MTB) purchase. (Finally upgrading from my trusty old Giant Reign 26!!) What’s more - I’ve been considering buying a motorcycle to travel with, but I didn’t think I’d be able to bring my bike, which was a bummer to realize. Well. This changes everything.
Savage AF!!!! Love the down hill wheelies and high speed bunny hops!
I’m inspired big time , I gotta load up my Kona Hoss Deluxe and hit the trails !🤩🇺🇸
wonderful places (apart from the fire) THANKS for taking us there jeffers loving it! ive been thinking about a rack for my adventure bike for ages im defo doing it now enjoy!
You are the top of the Tube
Thoroughly loved that, you should definitely do more of this content, would honestly watch all day. Nice one from fellow biker and mtb’r.
Awesome! I know when I got to hood river the one year I was down to about 20km/hr on my moto because the wind gusts were equally insane. I was being tossed around like a ragdoll on my 650lb bike with camping gear.
I have what appears to be the same rig - "2x2 Cycles" bike rack. Last year - did a weekend bike adventure with my Vstrom and MTB (vintage Trek carbon Y-bike converted SS) to a local bike race and volunteered and rode. Man I want to do a bigger adventure like yours. Inspiring.
your riding is artistic!
I use a chopped-down screen in summer (Australia). Those vents in your jacket and helmet need air-flow to work ;) As long as the flow is smooth (ie., really low screen) you won't get buffeting. Just need to avoid being behind traffic on freeway - clean air flow is king on a screen-less bike. Try it with no screen as well - might be all you need.
Awesome, I totally agree. I also ❤️ all kinds of MTBing. But being in the backcountry for a couple of days tops it all. Great video!!!
This was an instant sub from me, I love my 2x2 cycles rack. Also, you have amazing mtb skills friend. Great story!
You're incredible rider Jeff has been amazing adventure, a little risky for say something, but couldn't stop watching...you got me dude!!!
Cheers Ibis
Totally agree on those being the best trail, sweet bike and video👌
Thanks Ty!
liked and already a fan, Jeff.
Ibis is awesome, and so its rider!!!!
Excellent adventure, it looked like some work for the vid. I like your style and I also am a fan of the wooden spatula, mushies and peppers :)
Great video Jeff. You keep saying steep head angle at 67deg. I ride a 160mm Kona Abracadabra from 2013 and it had a then slack 68deg head angle . Before that I had a 2001 Kona Stab with a dual crown ( originally) 150mm fork and 68deg head angle. I’ve always wanted for my trail bikes that 150-160mm travel (on 26”) bikes .
I haven’t gone to big wheels yet but will probably in a few years.
I’m a live music videographer/photographer. My cash has been going there .
I have always been a fan of Ibis and the founder before Ibis was around.
Cool bike and super cool video.
Super stoked that Ibis is actually working with carbon fiber in California. If they can scale the operation and keep costs relatively the same, Ibis will definitely be my next bike. Also amazing adventure!!!
Yeah, they've been gearing up for this for almost a decade now. They are starting small, with one super high end bike, but I bet they do more as they get more experience. I do think they will continue to make bikes in Asia, as the Asian factories are a lot bigger with a far bigger skilled workforce, allowing for much more throughput.
Awesome that Ibis is manufacturing in the US ! I hope my next Ibis will also be Made In The USA !!!
Right on Dano! Thanks for watching!
Very cool that Ibis is manufacturing a carbon frame and not sourcing it to Asia. Also, I've always used the term "floating" when I ride a cross country-style bike. Nice edit!
One thing I always do when Backpacking or camping, I prep all my food before, like veggies. I will have everything chopped and bagged individually, then in a larger bag to keep any leaks at bay. Works great if you fix omelets/burritos for breakfast
Totally- but when you've got 5 days on the road, and very limited space along with no cooler, it's tough to pre-game like that. I have had a lot of success stopping in at a Taqueria and just getting 2-3 burritos to carry on my trips!
Great video!
What an amazing video. The quality of your videos is by far the best. I appreciate the hard work you put into your craft. Oh yeah nice riding too. lol. Ibis ain't no dummies, they knew they had to get the best to show off what this new bike can do. They needed too, it's too expensive for the blue collar folk like myself. $8000 starting point. Awesome work!
Mad skills on the Mortorcycle and Mtnbike.
You need to ride the best of both worlds. Get the best you can from Austria. Tatze Two Face Titanium ... this would suit the light IBIS downcountry bike!
Dude great video with the best of both worlds Mountain biking & motorcycles😎🤙🏾💪🏾
never seen any of your videos, and I'm happy to have watched this. Great editing, seem like a real ass person, good parent, NW native! keep on grinding!
Thanks Justin! This video was A LOT to edit and produce, but it's also one of my favorites of all time. Glad you enjoyed it!
Water soaked cooling vest makes a big difference with enough air flow
You have insane riding skills and such a sense of adventure, I envy your life 😀. Pretty balsy too waiting for dark to set up camp
Great vid!! 🤩
Thanks Dan!
This was a heck of an episode! Way to go Jeff! Top notch!
Amazing video!! Loved the energy, the style, the edit and vibe. 🤘🏻
And the drone shots when you were riding near the smoke from the fires, man that looks like a game. Something straight out of ‘Horizon zero dawn’ world. Unreal!
What a great adventure! Beauty locations/trails and your riding is so enjoyable to watch. Love to see this kind of mountain biking epic's!
Thank you! I've been dreaming about making more videos like this, glad you like it!
Another great video and a pleasure to watch. Looking forward to the next!
Thx a lot for hauling us along this awesome adventure! Of this was self filmed then it's mind blowing, if not, still amazingly good content!
Thanks Simon! Logan filmed the riding stuff from 3:05 to 5:45, I shot the rest on the go. Was a bit of a hustle!!!
What an excellent video. Absolutely agree with you about the short chainstays.
Great video Jeff, stoked to see you reviewing an Ibis again! My 91 Manitou FS bike had three inches of travel and we thought it was insane at the time, one of the best all around and DH bikes back then. Cool to see Ibis venturing into new territory. Dig all the behind the scene shots, know how long those take to setup :)
Love this video! I am striving to be a smidge as good as you are. Love your style and adventures.
Thanks Andrew!!!!
I love all travel of bikes as they seem to tickle different senses and inspire different riding attitudes... but the fun you can have on a slack xc bike - I sure hope the trend of overbiking can be tempered with an appreciation of shredding the hell out of short travel bikes.
Awesome adventure man. That last trail reminds me of the trails I ride in central Montana. Totally relate with you on the views and the places your bike will take you!
You seem like the nicest person, Jeff. Just a decent, caring human being.
As always, very entertaining. Drone shots are fantastic. How effortless does this guy move around on his bike, huh? Annoying 👀
Stay safe 🤙
Wow, thank you! I read your comment during a rough day, and it really cheered me up- thanks man! That drone actually crashed itself twice this winter, and is outta commission, but I got a replacement delivered literally TODAY! Hoping for more XC stuff like this soon!!!
@@JeffKendallWeed XC, enduro, trail, it's aaall good. Just do your thing 🙏, and thank you so much for your reply.
Cheers man!
Amazing 🤩 and he still go’s full send
Hahaha thanks Andrew!
Legendary vid!!!!!!
Great video. So jealous of all the open spaces you have over there.
That front wheel never touched the ground, amazing and inspiring video
Hahahaha thanks Nicolas! If you only have one trick, be sure to do it everywhere!
Hey I have that same pack! Rad
That was super sweet Jeff.
Damn this was a cool ass road trip, I enjoyed every bit of it
Thank you Frost!
Great video!!
Thanks Nick!
Looks like a great adventure. Your skills on a bike always amaze me!
Thank you Seth!
wow what a great video
