  • This cave is owned and managed by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy. It a very nice cave that has beautiful formations and prehistoric human and animal tracks. The cave is also know for its diverse animal life. It is a horizontal cave, so no vertical gear is required. The entrance can get flooded, so you have to watch the weather if you are planning a visit.

Done a lot of cave rescues in 80's and 90's out of Cumberland co Tn. Went into Wolf River Cave to rescue a National Geographic member that collapsed on their way to document the tracks and footprints. Still remember all the mud and fog in the Towering Inferno.

Explored this cave several times in the 70's and early 80's. Enjoyed the video, it brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing.

Did two double overnighters with Mark Poe about 1994. Have several hours of VHS video. The Jaguar prints we're being destroyed closer to the trail where not marked( hard to see with 1980's incandescent lights) so we flagged them off. We were crossing the dinosaurs back when a 3.0 earthquake hit the New Madrid. We heard rocks fall and thought it was other cavers but found none. Our video shows the bats going crazy in the Enchanted Forest from the quake.
Mark and his brother Steve just about lived in that cave for a decade before I did it with him.. They got lost in the lower section breakdown for about a day and connected the two trunks, but don't know how. There is so much more to this cave! So many big rooms, the lower stream passage is out of this world. I could go on. I wanna go back. Wish I could sleep there again! Looks like the road is overgrown, I noticed you hiking back to the entrance. I could fix it for you. .

Nice video! Thanks for sharing. I visited Wolf River Cave many times in the 80s when I was a member of the Cleveland Grotto of the NSS. There wasnt a hand line going up the Towering Inferno then and I was always just a little nervous going up the large slanted slab towards the top since it was a long way down just to the left of it. One trip we mapped Masso Crawl. Took hours to crawl in the water with a very low ceiling. It was difficult at time to keep your nose out of the water. We all had on wet suits of course. No way I could come close to fitting through that passage now. I have many slides from my visits there. Glad to see such an awesome cave is now protected.

Hi. im in the tn area and have always wanted to try caving but im a bit iffy on it because from what ive seen alot of caves dont allow exploring unless you have a guide. is this true for most caves in the area? and if not what would you reccomend i do to get started? thanks.

John, TN has loads of caves. If you are new to caving, I would suggest you hook up with a caving club. I am sure there are several in TN. Go to www.caves.org On this site you can look up caving clubs near you. It's a great way to get started. Caving folks are friendly people. They can help you figure out what gear you may need or loan you some. Also, they will take you caving and it's always nice to have someone lead the trip. It's in inexpensive sport and you see some awesone stuff underground. Good luck

if you are going to start caving, start off with guided tours until you get some experience under your belt. this cave in particular is closed to the random caver. there are plenty of other caves in Tn that you can explore at any time but i would have an experienced caver with me when you go. it only takes one slip and a sprain or break to put you in life and death danger if youre alone. just about every county in middle and eastern Tn have numerous caves to explore.
