There's a side quest that ends with this song, not going to spoil which one, where I can feel the npc crying thier lungs out. No voice acting, just text, but I can still audibly hear her.

I remember the first time I was directed to murder my closest friends to affirm a sycophantic belief in a creator- God that no longer exists used as an excuse to give me superficial meaning. We've all been there.

I just did this side quest, hearing the music come in at THAT part was so evocative. One of, if not my favorite moment in the game. It was just a kind of experience I’ve never had in any other game before.

God this scene was amazing. Nier Automata starts with the illusion of a happy ending, I think this was the first real glimpse at the tragedy to come.
      Spoilers below:
Just imagine the life of someone who exists only to kill their friends, lovers, family. A horrid existence where you build connections, delete the memories of your past misdeeds to try and move on, only to have it all happen again.
It's an endless cycle; all she can do is delete the truth of her being for days of blissful ignorance. But she'll always remember. And the pain will always begin anew.
It's no wonder she lost herself to madness.

One of my favorite things about this song, besides the song of course, is how rarely it is used in the game. There are a total of 4 (?) instances in the entire 40-60 hour game, two of which are from side content. If you play through just the main story this song only appears twice, and while I won't spoil when or why the song makes an appearance, in 3/4 instances it is used as a leitmotif. The final instance where it is used is when the story and characters are at their lowest, and one last mournful attempt is made to prevent the worst case scenario. In every instance, it is beautiful, and it is probably my favorite song in the entire soundtrack, both on its own and in the context of the actual game.

**SPOILER** When I was doing a quest on killing a group of machine life forms, this song started playing while they were asking 9s why he was killing them/how they will avenge their fallen family by killing 9s. This song made me question what 9s was doing and what he has become. In a way, I thought this song was mourning the loss of compassion and innocence 9s had after 2B's death. I also thought it was an outward look on what the proxy war has done to the machines and all parties involved. Now that the truth about YoRHa was revealed, I thought the song really reflected how pointless their struggle was.

If you listen to "War and War" immediately after this one, you can pick up a bit of "Mourning" in the refrain--except in that song it hits like "remembrance of the fallen" rather than "last desperate struggle."
Of course, "War and War" is built upon the "City Ruins" melody, so I might be putting the cart before the horse, but that's how it reads to me.

The game was built and designed to make you feel a specific emotion. The music is absolutely amazing and is just one of those factors. If you like video games and music then Nier Automata is a must play especially if you find value in games being art. Nier Automata is the one game I can confidently point at to prove video games are art.

Yoooooo, thanks so much for making this video! I’m actually pretty surprised you did it, but I appreciate it a lot!
The song Mourning was to showcase what the characters are lead to in Ending C, (which is why most people either never heard it in the game or don’t remember it.) If you were to stop and listen while in that scene, then you’ll finally understand the connection of the song with what the character is going to do and what’s the cost for doing it. But I still can’t thank you enough for this! Kudos to youuuu! :D

I was wondering if you've ever heard of a composer by the name of Yuki Kajiura? She's one of my favorite modern day composers and has a huge catalog of songs under her belt most of which have some major opera elements to them. If you haven't I highly recommend her I think you'll really like her music. A few good places to start are the songs Mezame, Salva nos, siren song and Godsibb. Great and insightful analysis as always, particularly your breakdown of how each of the vocal layers are doing their thing in very specific ways (pouring one out for the bass-baritones who underpin everything and just sort of melt into the root of the background, we see you and you are loved lol). I haven't been checking out many of your Nier-related videos because from my limited experience with the games (solely Automata) the music is predominately very, very melancholy, and I'm not always in that headspace. Don't ask me why I made an exception for a track literally called "Mourning" though. Glad I listened to this one, though, because I hadn't heard it during my initial partial playthrough, and it's a wonderful kind of haunting ethereal. Cheers as always!

I remember listening to this song when I was done with a side quest. I was 13 years of age at the time when I played Nier Automata (I know, very young), and this song scared the hell out of me. I quickly went to a transporter or went to another area, I believe it was City Ruins since it has a calming melody. Now watching your video, remembering the experience, and you commenting "something overseeing an event", it gives it a deeper meaning and it fits so well with Automata's plot. I will forever love both Replicants/Gestalt and Automata's music. It help me through so many emotions when I was coming of age. I'm 18 now and Automata is still my #1 favorite game of all time.

I’ve heard this song many times before, but today I had a new take on the piece: the ghostly choir feels like the mourning of the recently departed while the strings feel like the mourning of those left behind. When they unite in the last section, I’m left thinking of the suffering of the dead and the living and how they wish they could trade places. What a piece! 😅

    Really interesting note you made, that the piece is so incredibly intense, that it sounds like it's played from an outside point of view, looking into the game;
as if it's saying to the player *"this hurts [the character] so damned much, that you can only **_imagine_** how hard this is for [the character]... no, actually, you can't even **_begin_** to comprehend the pain that [the character] is going through, so we have tell you, from the perspective out here, from the outside of the 4th wall itself."*
I wouldn't put it past Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe to have intended it this way, even - their games are full of that type of stuff, albeit seemingly mostly for humorous intent - but then again, I would not doubt for a second that there are plenty of non-humorous 4th wall breaks in their games that I simply can't think of right now, being filled with emotions from remembering the game, distracted from clarity.

I think I remember, as a rule, Chaos language is a "concept" language that uses different real world languages as a "seed" on a song by song basis. That is, the common phonemes of a given language are taken and jumbled up, supposing to give an effect of a language's "drift" over a millennia or two. For instance, I believe Grandma is supposed to be French, Kaine is Gaelic, and Wretched Automatons is English. It has an uncanny effect if you speak the language of the Chaos version that's presented--like you can almost recognize words here and there, but not quite.

Yes I am with you here and I've watched Alex Moukala video as well. I speak german and for me personally, I always hear "Weil ich dich mag" - "because i like you" in Pascal's theme. It's amazing how these little bits always fit the tone and meaning of the song. Really amazing work

Y'know, this actually reminded me of another track that is really quite interesting; Sublimity, from Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward:
    ruclips.net/video/zXKVMy2XzFQ/видео.html
Much like this one, it's melancholic, but more than that it also inspires absolute dread and horror thanks to the... shall we say, *interesting* arrangement. To this day it's my favourite "horror" track despite the fact that it's technically not used in horror context, only when a character is reading a certain researcher notebook.

Not spoiling, but this plays a couple times in the story and you can totally miss it. I'm sure it's just bias for me since I heard it there first, but when it played first it hit way harder. I thought it the scenarios I triggered to get this song were just funny easter eggs lol - wasting so much time doing something most people probably just skip since it doesn't give much reward after the first one, then you kill the third one and Yoko Taro is like, 'congrats, you are a murderer and now you get to feel like one - here's their song by the way, listen to what you did' as a reward.

Hi Marco! Another great analysis as always!
I want to make a song request, and I know you already have received a lot of requests, but just know that you shouldn't feel burdened to pump these videos out; your own pace is most important :)
My request is "Le Ali del Principio" from Baten Kaitos Origins. (link: ruclips.net/video/-O0XE8w5glY/видео.html)
The song was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, composer of the Dark Souls series, Tales of series, and a bazillion other JRPGs. His wife (Yuko Sakuraba) wrote the Japanese lyrics which were then translated into Italian, and their daughter (Mio Sakuraba) was the singer. It's definitely a special piece of musical talent.
