As a kid of divorce I always really appreciated that Carl's anger and hurt towards his dad was never framed as wrong. It's very rare that a kid's show tells them that their not happy feelings are okay, and valid to express. His relationship with with step dad Dr Dave is also genuinely heartwarming when you see just how much Carl was missing someone like that in his life.

My favorite part of "And She Was Gone" is that Lois is well-aware that Ginger's poem is just a piece of writing but also makes it clear that whatever Ginger's emotions are, she shouldn't be ashamed or afraid of them and stands confident that Ginger would tell her if she had depressive or suicidal thoughts.

Honestly, was there even ONE ATBG fan who actually liked Dodie? Or would even want her as a friend IRL? Even as a kid who grew up watching it as the episodes came out, I always wondered how Ginger could stay with Dodie as a friend after the emotional crap she was CONSTANTLY put her through. Especially after Dodie cruelly tried breaking up Ginger/Darren after they became a couple because she was sick of the honeymoon phase they were in and wanted Ginger for herself again. Like, really? I could NEVER be friends with someone like that again. Or at least fully trust.

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” - C.S. Lewis

  • @slashbash1347

My favorite episode is the one with Grandma Bishop, mostly for Hoodsy's story. How many kids shows deal with the concept of losing someone you don't really love? Those feelings are just as real as grief, and Hoodsy had a valid reason for doing so (favortism toward Dodie). As a kid, I was shocked about how Carl said you don't have to love your relatives; you just have to respect them.
I also loved the episode where the Bishops bring along Carl and Ginger for a cabin trip, and Mrs. Bishop gets food poisoning and thinks Carl purposely poisoned her. It's nice seeing Ginger stand up for Carl, knowing that while he's a weird kid, he'd never act out of malice. Not for no reason, anyways.

Slashbash Losing Nana Bishop hits home for me now even more than it did as a kid. My grandfather passed away early in the new year and I struggled with why I wasn’t grieving as much as the other members of my family were and it was because I wasn’t close to him. My emotions were more anger based than sad and it was hard to manage them because everyone around me was so devastated and I was just like meh

    • @alyssaagnew4147

@@horsechick818 I know what you mean, my paternal grandfather died over a year ago and I honestly wasn't that sad. He'd been on the decline for years and I wasn't that close to him. It was more of a relief as we were going to move that summer to somewhere that was a lot further away and he needed a lot of attention and care from my dad, aunt, and the homecare assistant he shared with my grandmother. As a person, he was difficult and a man of his time. When I did cry at the funeral, it was more because everyone else (especially my dad) was crying rather than because I missed him.

One of my cousins was murdered several years ago. I didn’t really know her very well because she was several years older than me and she lived several states away. My Uncle passed away a little over a month ago, and while he was nice to me, I couldn't cry at his funeral. I wasn't close to him. I hardly saw my Uncle because he hardly came to family events. I dont remember much of him when I was a kid. When I was a teenager and adult, we would greet each other and join in discussions but that's pretty much it.
Everyone was crying throughout my Uncle's services, while I couldn't. I cried a little at the hospital when he passed but that was it. I felt guilty everyone else was devastated and I even tried forcing myself to cry but no tears came.

I personally love any episode with Courtney in the lead. I love how the show made her different from the typical rich popular girl u seen in a lot of shows. I love that she grows nd learns how to be a true friend nd a better person in general. I smile every time she is on screen. The episode where she warns ginger bout her so called best friends plot and ruin her relationship with her boyfriend showed how far she came and how much she valued her friendship with Ginger. Courtney may be a bit of a snob at times but she is a lovable snob.

Still I always found time to watch this after school and in the mornings sometimes... My older sister of 4 years deff had a role into it lol... Nick channel did a horrible job at airing this.. All the older season's/episodes seemed like they never aired them in the mid 2000s. The more iconic shows like Rugrats, SpongeBob and Rocket Power played their later season's 24/7... Funny comparison... You can take the average early teenager and relate them to a episode of Told By Ginger... It was so Jr high vibes throughout majority of the series... It kind of had a 2000s type kick to it in terms of fashion and what was hip and what wasn't.. Daria is a complete 90s fest throughout the entire series.. If you weren't born early enough or have any older siblings in high school at the time, than you won't be able to relate to at least 80% of the show...

I was a 90's kid but never actually sat down and watched Daria until the early 2010's and I found it still relatable as fuck, still relevant to big and small issues today, and most importantly, still a funny and emotionally resonant show when it counts. Daria may have been born from snarky 90's alternative culture and did often superficially cater to that culture, but it's also more than that, even decades later.

#5 the episode's message is too real for me. when I was a teenager, I was an outcast, because I didn't like typical teens' stuff, but instead I liked Disney, reading and anime, such as Digimon and Sailor Moon. many people mocked my interests, especially tv-shows I watched saying that they were either "girly" or childish. I felt embarrassed and hid my interests and tried for many years appear as "normal". nowadays I'm more comfortable with my inner geek and I tell openly about my interests.

I remember to this day the first time i watched the epsisode "And She was gone", it was so groundbreaking for me to see my own feelings portrayed in a cartoon, it felt liberating. I had never seen anything on tv that translated so well my thoughts. I think if you read between the lines, A Lesson on Tightropes is about a lot more than just Ginger's appendicitis. Its about how families and friends are effected when someone has a near death experience. Carl prays even though he's an atheist, their mother reflects on the joy that Ginger brought into her life as she was born and grew.....etc. And so what if it's sad? Sad is a normal, common, every day human emotion that is necessary to our well-being.

I agree with most of these, although one of my favorite and heartwrenching moments was left out of the list, as #4 I would have put the one where Carl finally drives his teacher to quit, as it not only shows so much more of Carl's depth and character, and the ending made me cry, since after pouring his heart out to her to come back and finally being sincere, and he's so sure she will come back the next day... The announcement is made she has passed on, showing that sometimes, no matter what, there really are no second chances in life sometimes, it really reached me deeply.

It might sound silly, but the episode about shaving legs left a huge impression on me. In middle school, I was super insecure about leg hair and everyone else shaved. I felt like the only girl who refused to have to shave my legs but also refused to wear anything that would show them. I don't know; something about having to shave felt like I was giving in to some battle against nature. Anyway, just seeing the topic come up on a TV show made me feel so much less like a weirdo and realized other girls went through similar issues. :') lol

Here's the thing: the issue is not the concept of growing up, its the concept what is considered to be growing up and what isn't. There are plenty of people with different hobbies and interests who dont do the things that theyre actually supposed to be doing. You can be a pokemon fan and have a stable full time job, a family, and pay your bills on time. You can also be a fan of the "Vanderpump Rules" and be a useless non functional memeber of society.
For some reason, some hobbies are associated with useless dumbasses and others arent. I get why but it still doesnt make much sense

I remember relating to the episode where Lois becomes a house cleaner during the nurses strike, as my mom did pretty much the same thing. My mom was a nurse but to take care of me and my little sister, a mortgage, our pets, and other normal life things she had to constantly pull double shifts 6-7 days a week, so we never really saw her, and she was really struggling just to make ends meat. When i was 9 or 10 she decided to quit her nursing job and start a house cleaning business. I remember being so embarrassed because kids at my school who's families were much better off were hiring her. Now no one ever said anything to me about it, but the thought at my mom having to clean these ppls toilets, clean up after them, etc. made me not only embarrassed for myself and my sister, but made me feel bad for my mom as I thought they would treat her like shit(never happened) or look down upon her. My mom being the great mom that she is had a talk with me as she could see I was extremely upset the 1st year or so of her new business and promised she wouldn't take anymore jobs of friends from school homes. After that I was fine with it, and I definatly got to see my mom more as she was her own boss, and to this day still has the business that has become extremely successful.

I may be a person with lots of responsibilities, but I find watch Disney, anime or playing games helps escape from everyday lives, but I do use them as references to relate to my teachings for the kids. I liked your video! It's funny as a kid I remember liking some episodes of ATBG but since I was 8 or 9 years old when it first came out some of the issues didn't always feel relatable but now that I'm older I feel like everyone can relate to some of the issues in this show esp the little seal girl since so many people are pressured into "growing up". I find it horrible that society tries to spite people just because they feel nostalgic and like to relive the same innocence they felt as a child. I'm 25 and still like Pokemon and video games to this day!

I definitely relate to the episode Little Seal Girl. When I was reaching my adult years, I was told over and over to stop watching cartoons that are meant for kids and start watching stuff meant for adults. I tried to please them, and I did find a few good adult shows I genuinely liked (i.e. Friends, Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, The Simpsons, Family Guy, etc.) but I felt a bit more at ease watching cartoons, including cartoons from my era. They relaxed me after a long, stressful. Nowadays, I still watch kids' cartoons, and I still have a few plushies, including from my childhood, and collect Little toy figures and pins from my childhood shows to show my "nerdy and proud of it" side.

I remember, when I was little, the show was airing and I watched it religiously... my maternal grandmother passed. When the episode Losing Nana Bishop aired, it was actually the day of her funeral, so when I watched it... It really resonated with me. I was so young, it was hard to understand... I was sad and crying, but I was SO little, I didn't really understand much... so I related a lot to Hoodsie's storyline.

15-I kinda don't like that episode- i feel its a bit TOO dramatic and they just turned Darren (especially Simone) into a huge douchebag, when Darren cared about Ginger to the moon and back. But I do love how they focus on Carl in the episode and give his view
14-I dont remember a lot about that episode, and forgot all about Carl's subplot.. who was the daughter he hurt? or do they mean Noelle?
13- This is a really good Macie episode. I love episodes that actually shine on her or show the friendship she and Ginger have rather than show how much of a terrible friend Dodie is. also a really good Hoodsie episode and shows Carl being a supportive friend
12-I dont think I watched this- pretty much because i dont like the idea that Miranda pretty much set Ginger up and was pretty much the worst thing you can do to a person (until later on in the series). But now that I see it on here, the rivalry of Carl and Blake makes sense
11-One of my favorites- though its pretty harsh for Ginger to imply Courtney gets punishment when Mipsy and Miranda should have gotten it- Courtney was essentially innocent
10-"You've flipped your lid, Carl!!! You lost it and it can't be found!"
9-I really don't like "Ginger is amazing!!" Episodes- and the backstabbing episodes just increased way too much
8-Amazing episode-for once Ginger is in the wrong and actually told to back off
7-It was kinda sudden/dark how it happened (i think it was implied heart attack), but one of the only good Dodie episodes
6-Amazing episode, Lois is best mom
5-I adore this episode, Macie comes out on top, and courtney does get taken down a peg (love courtney, but expecting to win just because of who she is is kinda wrong)
4-My favorite (even if the twist should have been revealed in the end for the audience) and the ending is great
3-A very dark episode, but very well made. Kinda dont like the "You always write happy so the one sad thing equals depression!" Though the implications of the poem are extremely dark
2-I really like the episode and its a good topic
1-Havent seen it in a while, but just kinda another "Ginger is amazing!" episode it feels
One of my favorites is "No Hope for Courtney"
