  • 'Nimrod' from Elgar's "Enigma Variations" has become one of his most beloved pieces of music. It is frequently played at state or solemn occasions and has also become an encore in its own right. In this way, it has been taken up by many orchestras all round the world and here is one of them. It is a heartfelt performance from a few years ago, played by the Bolshoi Theatre Symphony Orchestra under its former music director, Tugan Sokhiev.

Nimrod is a mythical hunter and Elgar's music editor and publisher was named Jaeger which is German for hunter. Jaeger was a friend of Elgar and so this variation is a portrait of his friend
