I have been studying the rise and fall of Muslim empire for a long time. There are multiple reasons. Most the harm is self inflicted due to a sense of superiority and self righteousness, refusing to embrace new ideas and technologies. Islamic expansion came at the tip of the sword not the pen. There was a dependence on faith and brute force. Europeans evolved and developed newer technologies and drove the Muslims into where they are today.

I really think we need to learn to differentiate between Islamic and Muslims civilizations. In my humble opinion, there is no such thing as Islamic / Hindu / Christian civilization. They are ideologies , not identities.

@braveheart8318 If you consider Islaam as an identity, then how do you explain the partition of Pakistan and Bangladesh, the conflict between Saudi and Turks/ Iran? In fact, don't go too far. Try to explain the current difference between Punjab and the rest of Pakistan ( without going into party politics). Prophet Mohammed PBUH was forced out of his hometown Makkah by the blood relatives that he later fought against. The context is completely different in the case of pre partition India, where everyone, regardless of religion, lived peacefully (mostly).

Just to keep pace with the world requires acquisition of new knowledge on a constant basis. The education system in advanced countries regularly requires interrogating old norms and ideas, questioning, changing and adopting them to meet new challenges. It seems to me that this spirit of enquiry is missing or diminished in societies sliding back. The certainties of the past give comfort to them in an uncertain world and seem attractive to hang on to. But they offer no groundwork for meeting unforeseen challenges. Instead of looking inwards they find it easier to blame others for their misfortunes. It’s probably more fruitful to put aside the dogmas of the old and develop a pragmatic approach. Learn from the experience of the West. How did the West propel itself from the dark ages and dominated all aspects of human endeavour from science, technology to arts over the course of nearly five hundred years. Why is the far east now, including China, Japan and South Korea moving forward at breakneck speed leaving Middle East behind. This is despite the natural wealth bestowed to them in the form of oil and It still takes western experts to run their enterprises. Their conflict between ideas invariably boils into an open war with much bloodshed. In the battle of ideas comprise and pragmatism is the key and not the total annihilation of the other. Perhaps this will be a long way coming but it’s where the salvation lies.

I understand where Dr. Rehman is coming from, but I think he's focused on what Muslims did wrong in the past. I believe we should be looking forward, not backward. We need to acknowledge the external factors that have held us back, like systemic oppression and discrimination. And then we need to work together to build a better future. It's not about dwelling on our mistakes, but about learning from them and moving forward. Let's focus on creating a brighter tomorrow, rather than getting stuck in the past.

One of the greatest misconceptions or myths that I come across quite often is that the Islamic Golden Age came to an end following the destruction of Baghdad at the hands of the Mongols in 1258 AD. We, have a tendency to overestimate the significance of the Mongol sack of Baghdad. People often tend to forget just how weak and insignificant the Abbasid Caliphate had become prior to its end in the 13th century. This misconception arises from conflating the Abbasid Caliphate during its glory days centuries prior with the Abbasid Caliphate of the 13th century. A Caliphate that had been in decline for centuries that was now little more than the region of Baghdad (Mesopotamia). A Caliph that was little more than a religious figurehead, with no real temporal or political power, beyond handing out titles in exchange for favors. An Abbasid victory of the Mongol forces in the Siege of Baghdad would not have changed anything in the long term. It would have bought the city a few more years of survival at best. Remember that Baghdad would have been captured or sacked a few decades prior (1217) by the Khwarazmians. It had survived that crisis due to pure luck. The truth is that the Abbasid Caliphate, and therefore Baghdad, was already doomed by this point. It would have fallen to the next attack by the Mongols or someone else. The fall of Baghdad was inevitable in the 13th century. It was only a matter of time. The idea that the destruction of Baghdad brought about an end to the Islamic Golden Age is also a myth. The city of Baghdad was not the sole site of sciences, literature, arts, culture, etc within the Islamic world. It was just one single site of many. One that had been in decline for centuries now. New centers - capital of new Islamic powers (Cairo, Gurganj and Delhi) - had already risen up to become more significant centers of learning and culture. The truth is that the Islamic Golden Age was already in decline before the rise of the Mongols. The decline of sciences within the Islamic world simply coincidentally took place in the same time period (12th-13th century) as the destruction of Baghdad. Correlation does not always imply causation. It is just the easiest explanation to an extremely complex issue. Remember that even after the destruction of Baghdad in the 13th century, the desire for knowledge and pursuit of sciences within the Islamic world did not just die off. Nor did Muslim scholars of renown just cease to exist. We simply see them take hold in different centers in the Islamic world. Look at Ibn Khaldun, one of the greatest intellectual minds of the 14th century, in North Africa as an example. Let’s not forget that the Mongol invasions were followed by a renaissance within the Islamic world due to better inter-connectivity due to the Pax Mongolica. Successor states to the Mongol Empire, such as the Timurid Empire, would bring forth the Timurid Renaissance - a new Golden Age in terms revival of sciences, arts, literature, culture, etc - which was now centered around Central Asia. The city of Samarkand for example would serve as centers that could have rivalled Baghdad at its zenith. This new renaissance would end up being inherited or carried forth by the three great gunpowder empires (Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal) within the Islamic world in the early modern era.

I don't think the speaker is right about Persia(Iran). Ahmad Shah Qajar succeeded to the throne at the age of 11 years and when he went into exile-deposed by Reza Shah, his age was 25 years. It wasn't Qajar that obstructed the process of reform in Persia (at that time Iran was called Persia), it were the mechanations of the British Empire, which fearful of the threat to its colony in India (the so-called British Raj) supported Reza Sha into deposing Ahmad Shah Qajar (and starting Pahlavi Dynasty). The aim was a government in Iran that would be under the control of the British.

The Abbasids were emperors, they ruled an empire. Such a polity doesn’t exactly exude benevolence, fairness and kindness. So one could ask “Yes, it was a Golden Age but for whom?” Take al-Zahrawi who I brought up a couple times in the answer. He was patronized by the Umayyad Caliphate of Spain, so he worked in a hospital and had a monthly salary provided by the Caliph. Where did the Caliph get the money to finance the hospital and Zahrawi’s salary for decades? The slave trade The Andalusians emptied central Spain with intense raiding as they would capture large numbers of Spaniards and sell them into slavery in North Africa. So all of the medical advancements produced by Zahrawi were made possible thanks to the imperialism of Andalus which was so cruel that it even rejected the concept of dhimmis as that concept emerged in the Rashidun Caliphate to argue that a Muslim ruler had an obligation to protect his non-Muslim subjects so the Andalusians found a loophole. They didn’t really claim central Spain therefore the Christians there couldn’t be subjects(citizens) therefore it was fair game for slave-raiding. So while this period was a Golden Age, it’s in reference to science not humanity. For obvious reasons, when a Spanish family was being chained and forced to march to a port to be shipped to a slave market in Morocco, they weren’t saying “It’s fine. I heard from one of the raiders that the profits of this expedition will fund research into anesthesia. Our sacrifice will help humanity unlock one of the keys to long surgeries which will help cure countless ailments!” These were empires, not benevolent forces of good.

Russia, China, Vietnam, everywhere. Those dutifully implemented the Ten-Point Action Plan of the Communist Manifesto. All other brands of Socialism have been dead on arrival. Point being, people say “golden age” and imagine different things at the same time. If you ask me, by any objective metric, what followed after the Mongol invasion was bigger in scale than what came before (philosophers? poets? efficient imperial machines? mounds of corpses? all got bigger!). The “golden age” is looked back on mostly because it was Arabic, and hence more relatable to where the Islamic world is today than where it was in the cosmopolitan Turco-Persian mix of the second millenium AD. Nobody in the Islamic world felt the pre-12th or pre-10th century period represented a “golden age” until British historians started romanticizing their idea of the “Arab race” ruling itself, as opposed to the Turks doing the same (see Disraeli’s romantic novel Tancred for an example… the Arabs are conflated with the Greeks, Phoenicians, powerful women and the general British view of warm climes as a pleasant, relaxed, classical place where all religions meld into one). It has no reflection in mundane reality.

When I compare the acceptance of Hijab among women and trend of namaz and fasting I see that todays young generation of Muslims is more religious and adopting religious practices and trying to understand Islam compared to 50 or sixty years back. In those days Islam was a tradition which majority follow without knowlegde and understanding but todays young man want to understand the real concept behaind " La ilaha illallah ". No doubt under the influence of Western culture many of young people are becomming Athiest but their numbers of far low compared to those who are accepting Islam after getting the the indepth knowledge of the their religion.

As an American of Pakistani descent, I am tempted to offer an oversimplified but somewhat accurate explanation of Islamic countries overall decline: political fragmentation, corrupt governance, and a move away from the rational and logical form of Islam, as seen under the Mutazalite and Ibn Sina schools of thought, to a more rigid, dogmatic, and literalist interpretation of Islam mixed with elements of Sufism. In many ways, the U.S. is also experiencing a similar decline currently, with political fragmentation, corrupt leadership that is sold out to the military-industrial complex, corporate and foreign lobbies, and a tilt towards a more puritanical and literalist interpretation of the Bible.

You have misrepresnted the critiques of decline narrative here. They don't say that there was no decline. They question the timeline and nature of decline as described by orientalist thinkers and argue that decline (which was more of a political decline than the intellectual decline) happened from the period which was close to the start of european colonization (or some say that european colonization led to the political decline which then triggered intellectual decline)

I have been studying the rise and fall of Muslim empire for a long time. There are multiple reasons. Most the harm is self inflicted due to a sense of superiority and self righteousness, refusing to embrace new ideas and technologies. Islamic expansion came at the tip of the sword not the pen. There was a dependence on faith and brute force. Europeans evolved and developed newer technologies and drove the Muslims into where they are today.

Prophet Mohammed PBUH was forced out of his hometown Makkah by the blood relatives that he later fought against. The context is completely different in the case of pre partition India, where everyone, regardless of religion, lived peacefully (mostly).

Just to keep pace with the world requires acquisition of new knowledge on a constant basis. The education system in advanced countries regularly requires interrogating old norms and ideas, questioning, changing and adopting them to meet new challenges. It seems to me that this spirit of enquiry is missing or diminished in societies sliding back. The certainties of the past give comfort to them in an uncertain world and seem attractive to hang on to. But they offer no groundwork for meeting unforeseen challenges. Instead of looking inwards they find it easier to blame others for their misfortunes. It’s probably more fruitful to put aside the dogmas of the old and develop a pragmatic approach. Learn from the experience of the West. How did the West propel itself from the dark ages and dominated all aspects of human endeavour from science, technology to arts over the course of nearly five hundred years. Why is the far east now, including China, Japan and South Korea moving forward at breakneck speed leaving Middle East behind. This is despite the natural wealth bestowed to them in the form of oil and It still takes western experts to run their enterprises. Their conflict between ideas invariably boils into an open war with much bloodshed. In the battle of ideas comprise and pragmatism is the key and not the total annihilation of the other. Perhaps this will be a long way coming but it’s where the salvation lies.

One of the greatest misconceptions or myths that I come across quite often is that the Islamic Golden Age came to an end following the destruction of Baghdad at the hands of the Mongols in 1258 AD. We, have a tendency to overestimate the significance of the Mongol sack of Baghdad.
People often tend to forget just how weak and insignificant the Abbasid Caliphate had become prior to its end in the 13th century. This misconception arises from conflating the Abbasid Caliphate during its glory days centuries prior with the Abbasid Caliphate of the 13th century. A Caliphate that had been in decline for centuries that was now little more than the region of Baghdad (Mesopotamia). A Caliph that was little more than a religious figurehead, with no real temporal or political power, beyond handing out titles in exchange for favors.
An Abbasid victory of the Mongol forces in the Siege of Baghdad would not have changed anything in the long term. It would have bought the city a few more years of survival at best. Remember that Baghdad would have been captured or sacked a few decades prior (1217) by the Khwarazmians. It had survived that crisis due to pure luck. The truth is that the Abbasid Caliphate, and therefore Baghdad, was already doomed by this point. It would have fallen to the next attack by the Mongols or someone else. The fall of Baghdad was inevitable in the 13th century. It was only a matter of time.
The idea that the destruction of Baghdad brought about an end to the Islamic Golden Age is also a myth. The city of Baghdad was not the sole site of sciences, literature, arts, culture, etc within the Islamic world. It was just one single site of many. One that had been in decline for centuries now. New centers - capital of new Islamic powers (Cairo, Gurganj and Delhi) - had already risen up to become more significant centers of learning and culture. The truth is that the Islamic Golden Age was already in decline before the rise of the Mongols. The decline of sciences within the Islamic world simply coincidentally took place in the same time period (12th-13th century) as the destruction of Baghdad. Correlation does not always imply causation. It is just the easiest explanation to an extremely complex issue.
Remember that even after the destruction of Baghdad in the 13th century, the desire for knowledge and pursuit of sciences within the Islamic world did not just die off. Nor did Muslim scholars of renown just cease to exist. We simply see them take hold in different centers in the Islamic world. Look at Ibn Khaldun, one of the greatest intellectual minds of the 14th century, in North Africa as an example. Let’s not forget that the Mongol invasions were followed by a renaissance within the Islamic world due to better inter-connectivity due to the Pax Mongolica. Successor states to the Mongol Empire, such as the Timurid Empire, would bring forth the Timurid Renaissance - a new Golden Age in terms revival of sciences, arts, literature, culture, etc - which was now centered around Central Asia. The city of Samarkand for example would serve as centers that could have rivalled Baghdad at its zenith. This new renaissance would end up being inherited or carried forth by the three great gunpowder empires (Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal) within the Islamic world in the early modern era.

I don't think the speaker is right about Persia(Iran). Ahmad Shah Qajar succeeded to the throne at the age of 11 years and when he went into exile-deposed by Reza Shah, his age was 25 years. It wasn't Qajar that obstructed the process of reform in Persia (at that time Iran was called Persia), it were the mechanations of the British Empire, which fearful of the threat to its colony in India (the so-called British Raj) supported Reza Sha into deposing Ahmad Shah Qajar (and starting Pahlavi Dynasty). The aim was a government in Iran that would be under the control of the British.

The Abbasids were emperors, they ruled an empire. Such a polity doesn’t exactly exude benevolence, fairness and kindness. So one could ask “Yes, it was a Golden Age but for whom?”
Take al-Zahrawi who I brought up a couple times in the answer. He was patronized by the Umayyad Caliphate of Spain, so he worked in a hospital and had a monthly salary provided by the Caliph. Where did the Caliph get the money to finance the hospital and Zahrawi’s salary for decades?
The slave trade
The Andalusians emptied central Spain with intense raiding as they would capture large numbers of Spaniards and sell them into slavery in North Africa.
So all of the medical advancements produced by Zahrawi were made possible thanks to the imperialism of Andalus which was so cruel that it even rejected the concept of dhimmis as that concept emerged in the Rashidun Caliphate to argue that a Muslim ruler had an obligation to protect his non-Muslim subjects so the Andalusians found a loophole. They didn’t really claim central Spain therefore the Christians there couldn’t be subjects(citizens) therefore it was fair game for slave-raiding.
So while this period was a Golden Age, it’s in reference to science not humanity.
For obvious reasons, when a Spanish family was being chained and forced to march to a port to be shipped to a slave market in Morocco, they weren’t saying “It’s fine. I heard from one of the raiders that the profits of this expedition will fund research into anesthesia. Our sacrifice will help humanity unlock one of the keys to long surgeries which will help cure countless ailments!”
These were empires, not benevolent forces of good.
The history of humanity is filled with such empires based on class exploitation since the neolithic revolution.

This singular focus on grabbing power works extremely well as long as you’re an underdog. But once you get power, problems start mushrooming. The most obvious one is infighting. An era of purges follows Communist rule as a shadow.
Early Christianity had this predicament. However, defending a revolution seems to put more at stake than saving our immortal souls.
Dogmatism is a powerful but very much double-edged sword, though. An ideology-based movement that is obsessed with the purity of thoughts and actions sooner or later gets a pronounced tunnel vision. Because “strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it!”
Into the needle’s eye
Jesus can’t be wrong, right? Logically, the narrower the path, the purer the action. Many a Marxist followed this logic. And as it happened, it’s exactly them who achieved the greatest success. Russia, China, Vietnam, everywhere. Those dutifully implemented the Ten-Point Action Plan of the Communist Manifesto.
All other brands of Socialism have been dead on arrival. Discussion clubs, university papers, and online forums are full of talk about “democratic Socialism” and suchlike. Guess what? Nothing ever came out of this.
Treading water
The problem with dogmatism, however, is that it ossifies. Marxism was able to keep its progressives flame as long as the first generation of revolutionaries were alive (Stalin, Mao, Tito). Once they died, the system started running out of ideas. Applied Marxism turned into a collection of dead texts and hordes of theorists feeding on them, just like religious theologists feed off sacred tomes.
Which is why the children and grandkids of triumphant proletarians rolled back the Marxist project toward the end of the 20th century. Russia, China, Yugoslavia, Albania, Vietnam, and even North Korea. Cuba has taken Custer’s last stand on the grave of applied Marxism. But few doubt they can hold very long.
The thing is, if you already have power, Marxism doesn’t make sense for you anymore.

Contradiction in terms
Baghdad had long ceased to be important in the 13th century: it was even less important than Papal Rome after the fall of the empire, insofar as the rest of its religious world did not really pay attention to it, and it headed no major institutions. The ‘Abbasids are way oversold in popular history.
The Arab empire entered its final death spiral in the 860s (Anarchy at Samarra), when most of the provinces were being fought over by local warlords and Iraq itself the site of pitched battles between Persian and Turkish factions. The final “nail in the coffin” was put in the 940s, when the Kurd-ish Daylamites took Baghdad and proclaimed a kingdom there, while a new pan-Islamic Shi’i caliphate was established in the Mediterranean (the Fatimids).
“Golden Age” is meaningless, because it means different things to different people. Does it mean (a) a mosaic of petty, warring states that nevertheless produce brilliant philosophers (pre-imperial China, Renaissance Italy, the 10th century Middle East?) Does it mean (b) a big, stable empire? Does it mean (c) lots of happy people free from said big, stable empire? (&c.) Depending on your definition, this happened at different times, usually for much shorter periods than six centuries (a century is enough to realize any of these, possibly to its conclusion).
Point being, people say “golden age” and imagine different things at the same time. If you ask me, by any objective metric, what followed after the Mongol invasion was bigger in scale than what came before (philosophers? poets? efficient imperial machines? mounds of corpses? all got bigger!). The “golden age” is looked back on mostly because it was Arabic, and hence more relatable to where the Islamic world is today than where it was in the cosmopolitan Turco-Persian mix of the second millenium AD.
Nobody in the Islamic world felt the pre-12th or pre-10th century period represented a “golden age” until British historians started romanticizing their idea of the “Arab race” ruling itself, as opposed to the Turks doing the same (see Disraeli’s romantic novel Tancred for an example… the Arabs are conflated with the Greeks, Phoenicians, powerful women and the general British view of warm climes as a pleasant, relaxed, classical place where all religions meld into one). It has no reflection in mundane reality.

No doubt today it seems that Muslims and their civilisation is far behind Western civilization but it is not the real case. The forecasts show that by the end of 21st century Islam will be the dominating religion and it is todays fastest growing religion of the world. When I compare the acceptance of Hijab among women and trend of namaz and fasting I see that todays young generation of Muslims is more religious and adopting religious practices and trying to understand Islam compared to 50 or sixty years back. In those days Islam was a tradition which majority follow without knowlegde and understanding but todays young man want to understand the real concept behaind " La ilaha illallah ". No doubt under the influence of Western culture many of young people are becomming Athiest but their numbers of far low compared to those who are accepting Islam after getting the the indepth knowledge of the their religion.
Dominating the world by population does not mean its a good civilisation. it can still be a declining civilisation even with numbers.
Increasing in numbers is just means more dumb people around. It will not make you powerful, look at the size of Japan, Sweden and Germany, they have more impact than all Muslim countries around the world, despite having fraction of the size.
You are very right that in the last 50 years, young Muslims are becoming more practicing Muslims as compare to traditional Muslims. It is the great achievement because of Muslim reformists of the Ummah.

As an American of Pakistani descent, I am tempted to offer an oversimplified but somewhat accurate explanation of Islamic countries overall decline: political fragmentation, corrupt governance, and a move away from the rational and logical form of Islam, as seen under the Mutazalite and Ibn Sina schools of thought, to a more rigid, dogmatic, and literalist interpretation of Islam mixed with elements of Sufism. In many ways, the U.S. is also experiencing a similar decline currently, with political fragmentation, corrupt leadership that is sold out to the military-industrial complex, corporate and foreign lobbies, and a tilt towards a more puritanical and literalist interpretation of the Bible.

You have misrepresnted the critiques of decline narrative here. They don't say that there was no decline. They question the timeline and nature of decline as described by orientalist thinkers and argue that decline (which was more of a political decline than the intellectual decline) happened from the period which was close to the start of european colonization (or some say that european colonization led to the political decline which then triggered intellectual decline)
@@sleepingforever9122 there are dozens of variations of the decline narrative. When, where, how, how much, and why. Every historian has his own view. My point is simply to underscore the 5 points I mentioned.
1. Decline narrative was created in the aftermath of military defeats of the great empires.
2. It was created by Muslims themselves.
3. It is central to the contemporary debates within Islam from all sides.
4. Its purpose is not to serve imperialism but to find ways to counter it.
5. All civilisations rise and fall. Islamic civilisations were no exceptions.
Hence, I do not think we can dismiss it by merely categorising it as orientalist.

What I am saying is that critiques of decline narrative don't reject the notion that there was decline. They reject the particular popular narrative about the timeline, nature and extent of decline. That particular version of decline theory which argues for a specific timeline (post Ghazali) and nature (triumph of religion over rationality) of decline is denoted by them as decline narrative and critiqued by them. Hence when they are critiquing the decline narrative, they are criticizing that particular version of decline theory.

رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا:’’عنقریب ایسا زمانہ آئے گا کہ نام کے سوا اسلام کا کچھ باقی نہیں رہے گا۔ الفاظ کے سوا قرآن کا کچھ باقی نہیں رہے گا۔ اس زمانہ کے لوگوں کی مسجدیں بظاہر تو آباد نظر آئیں گی لیکن ہدایت سے خالی ہوں گی۔ ان کے علماء آسمان کے نیچے بسنے والی مخلوق میں سے بدترین مخلوق ہوں گے۔ ان میں سے ہی فتنے اٹھیں گے اور ان میں ہی لوٹ جائیں گے۔‘‘ (مشکوٰۃ، کتاب العلم الفصل الثالث صفحہ 38 صفحہ43)
اسی طرح فرمایا اے مسلمانو! تم پہلی قوموں کے حالات کی پیروی کرو گے جس طرح ایک بالشت دوسری بالشت کے مشابہ ہوتی ہے اور ایک ہاتھ دوسرے ہاتھ کے مشابہ ہوتا ہے اسی طرح تم پہلی قوموں کے نقشِ قدم پر چلو گے۔ صحابہؓ نے عرض کیا یارسول اللہ! کیا یہودونصاریٰ کے نقشِ قدم پر چلیں گے؟ آپؐ نے فرمایا اور کس کے؟ (بخاری کتاب الاعتصام)
رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا:عُلَمَآءُ ھُمْ شَرُّ مَنْ تَحْتَ اَدِیْمِ السَّمَآءِ۔اُن کے علماء آسمان کے نیچے بسنے والی مخلوق میں بد ترین ہوں گے) ان میں سے ہی فتنے اُٹھیں گے اور ان میں ہی لَوٹ جائیں گے۔(بہیقی بحوالہ مشکوٰۃ کتاب العلم الفصل الثالث صفحہ۳۸ کنزالعمّال ۶ صفحہ ۴۳)
آنحضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا میری امت پر ایک زمانہ اضطراب اور انتشار کا آئے گا۔ لوگ اپنے علماء کے پاس راہ نمائی کی امید سے جائیں گے تو وہ انہیں بندروں اور سؤروں کی طرح پائیں گے۔ تَكُوْنُ فِيْ أُمَّتِيْ فَزعة فيصير الناس إلى علمائهم فإذا هم قردة وخنازير۔ (کنز العمال کتاب القیامہ من قسم الاقوال باب الخسف والمسخ حدیث نمبر 38727جلد 14صفحہ 280)
