Great interview.A nice gift for the fans.
I am Korean and I am a fan of them. Their music and music videos gave me a lot of inspiration and curiosity in my childhood. Listening to what phillip oakey had to say in this interview, I learned that he is a musician who is pure and genuine about music. They sang humans through a tool called a synthesizer.
Phil ,you are great, your voice is unique , always loved the Human Leugue, bought the Album Dare in th 80's ,hooked from there onwards. Spot on Girls, with music now, its about the celeb status,& making money, not the passion. So glad i was growing up with these bands.
I echo your words, enjoy the festivities! Giorgio 🙂
I'm loving this.
The survivors of yesterday are the ones who were nice and didn't piss off many on the way up.
They do seem pleasant, humble, almost pathologically modest, yet genuine, don't they?
so true what they say about the fame thing, some people just want to be famous for anything, a least the human league had tunes to back them up...
SO INSPIRING!!!!!!!!!
YES! I know!
isn't the guitars versus synthesizers feud outmoded in 2011? There is so much more room for niche markets these days. You can be electroclash or old-school heavy metal today and you'll find fans. It's very different from 25 years ago when the music industry was dominated by a handful of major record labels. Better DIY technology and the Internet enables artists to bypass the bigshots.
I love joanne
So do I. Intact and Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ my hero 4ever. Doesn't know it yet. But she is largely responsible 4 the best night ever of my life. I have got a signed photo of my favourite Human League sweet ❤️ ie Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️. I've have often dreamed of my favourite band ie The Human League sweet ❤️ s ie Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ and Queen Susan Sulley ❤️ and King Philip Oakey 2. Hearing me doing my self t0 drum kit sound affect impression 2 a good Human League track. @ the next Human League gig that I go 2c. 4exp The Human Leagues Romantic album track. Men are dreamers. And ather the gig in question. Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ asked me. Who's t0 u Paul m8 2do that drum kit sound affect impression. And when I tell Queen Joanne Catherall ❤️ that it's all self t0. & When both Queen Susan Sulley ❤️ and King Philip Oakey heard my self t0 drum kit sound affect impression. They all asked me if I can do it on stage with them. Ofcorse I will gladly say yes to the offer.

The real criticism with the synthesizer was that you didn't need any real musical skill or talent to produce great music or smash hits. Anything that can produce a sound, rythtm, or beat; whether it is your hands, feet, mouth, or making sounds with beating pots and pans; you can produce music from it. It's not that the synthesizer was not real music, it's just that you didn't need real human power to produce sounds; anyways.. HL made great music!
Unfortunately they are not right saying that synthesizers are just as important as guitars right now. A band without a guitar is hardly accepted as a band.
That's because there's still a bit of a stigma against synthesizers. You can have a team of musicians performing entirely on electronic keyboards and it's still a band. A band is just a team of musicians playing music together... it doesn't matter what instruments you have. This idea that you have to have so-called "real" acoustic instruments to even be considered a band is the most bullshit thing I've ever heard.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Think of Pet Shop Boys and how many successful songs they have been realising.....just like the Human League. Just because someone is jumping with a boring guitar doesn't turn it in a genius. I too have brown eyes and gray hair but I am not George Clooney. Thanks for defending synths!!!!! 🙂 @@justinnaramor6050
joanne and anna torroja look alike!
Phil, I wish I could say my interest in you is purely professional 😏
Join the queue, and I'm not even gay, but I might make and exception for Philip. A lovely man, both in looks and character. I think the word I'm searching for is 'grounded'
Queen Joanne Catherall sweetheart I can't thank u3 gems enough 4making my number 1dream come true 4times now ie meeting u3 gems. Dear Human League no one is going to forgive you!!!! Thank you for criticizing this Me culture where whatever they do deserves to be worshipped. Facebook, selfies, smartphones just to constantly appear, but in the end of the day..... who are they? Thank you for the music dear HL! 🙂
Phil Oakey is a much better musician than Herbie..... LOL
Every melody is mirrored in mirror man
Probably a good Chess player. Like me.
