  • Today's piece is based on the 4:3 polyrhythm, and the two different ways to play it. Since this idea was entirely rhythmic, I figured it would be easier to write for unpitched percussion and forgo harmony altogether.
The lower timbale always plays the beat as written. In the 3/4 measures, that results in it plays the 3 part of the 4:3 rhythm, and in 4/4 measures, the 4 part. I found the "switching" between these rhythmic ideas to be an interesting concept, so most of the piece develops the spacing between the switchings, going from 8 bars, to 4, to 2, and finally alternating on every bar.
Beyond that, this study is simply me acquainting myself with how to write for percussion. I'd love to get some feedback from a proper percussionist, who can tell me how idiomatic, difficult, or playable this really is.
As always, these pieces are welcome for anyone and everyone to play! All I ask is that you share it with me, because I'd love to hear it done by live players!
