  • In the early hours of July 6th 2022, the Norton Shores Police Department would descend on an address in Michigan to reports that a young boy wasn't breathing.
When they arrived, they found 15-year-old Timothy Ferguson unresponsive, sadly he would be pronounced dead.
There was something off about Timothy though.... his weight.
His mother Shanda Vander Ark would be questioned about this & subsequently told officers that he had been on a hunger strike, however when police began to collect evidence including camera footage, it painted a different picture, something much darker had taken place.
In the 6 months leading up to July 6th 2022, Timothy had been abused at the hands of his mother & brother which ultimately led to his death.

I've never experienced anything like this. It's hard yes but she is absolutely amazing in every way. She is funny, she is sweet, she is beautiful and she is my sweet punky punky baby garfunky. How in the world do you harm your own baby? My husband use to get frustrated when she wouldn't listen so we went to therapy and one of the best things they told us was," you're angry because you think she's not listening to you, you are taking something personal that isn't," she isn't defiant she's a baby that has issues understanding and that's okay. I could believe he wasn't malicious but just a coward that wanted to keep his abusive mother's attention on anyone but himself - even if it meant being complicit in Shanda's abuse against his own younger brother. Paul is extremely skinny, and his nose/mouth looks like it's taken some abuse that hadn't healed well (i.e. not treated by any doctor). This could be from peers, siblings, accidents, or other injuries not from his parents but bullies almost always acquire their capacity to abuse weaker/smaller victims from a parent... Without the father's influence, I don't know that he would have done whatever his mother asked.. he wanted her approval so much and I think she lovebombed Paul that he entered a highly delusional state that might not have happened without the father's bad behavior.

An easy way to tell if someone is faking grief is if you can't feel grief with them. A parent genuinely distraught over the death of their child is heartwrenching and will often bring tears to your eyes as well when they speak about their loss.

I tend to do that in emotional situations. I'm generally not very outwardly emotional anyway, at least around people, but I've been in situations where fear or sadness or worry or anxiety or a m8xture of any/all were overwhelming to the point of having a hard time breathing or concentrating but if there's business to be taken care of and someone asks me something or gives me a task, it's like a "reset". This can last for a minute or 10 minutes or longer so the best bet is to shotgun me questions so I switch focus because the second that thought is done, the overwhelming emotion can just flood back in all over again. I think it's funny that people will point out certain behaviors when we know someone is guilty of something but totally ignore the exact same behaviors in genuine situations where we know the person being focused on has committed no crime.

It makes me so mad and sad for the poor kid! My daughter got sick on 12/19/23 and on 12/21 diagnosed with flu a and rsv, then she got a uti, then she was diagnosed with flu b and has missed 10days (3wks then returned, then an additional 2.5wks) of school due to days off for holidays and such added in. I was in contact with her teacher daily, contact with the school nurse weekly, her primary doctor and I sent emails daily. I was so worried she would end up in the hospital or worse. I slept on the couch outside of my daughter’s bedroom and on the really bad nights I would fall asleep in her office chair at her desk. I was scared to leave her side. She was having trouble eating anything and drinking wasn’t easy for her either. I would set alarms to give meds and try to get her to at least take a drink. She ended up losing 11.5lbs over the 8wks she was sick. (She would get better go to school and get sick all over again 12/19-2/8 she was sick off and on). When we went for her follow up to make sure she was ok to go back to school, I was so scared bc she lost so much weight and missed so much school I thought the school was definitely going to say something. Her doc is amazing tho, I’ve known him since before I had kids (my hubs doctor). So he was a huge help and emailed/sent letters to school. I couldn’t imagine my child being 1/3 of the weight they should! She has only been back to school for two days and I hope this week goes smoothly. Her doc said I did the best I could and she wasn’t in harms way bc of the weight loss. Thankfully I kept her as hydrated as I could. I don’t know how anyone could do this to a child

As someone who has personally grown carolina reapers and ghost chili peppers, the fact that they were forcing him to eat bread covered in that stuff is absolutely horrifying. Just ONE drop of carolina reaper hot sauce is enough to hospitalize you and permanently damage you internally. Not only can it burn your esophagus and cause severe stomach ulcers- ESPECIALLY on an empty stomach, but the pain alone is so severe it can cause you to hallucinate and blackout. I have no idea how that one cop interviewing the absolute joke of a son was able to keep his cool and still continue with the interrogation with as much composure and professionalism as he did. He also testified when he was on the stand and said that he made Timothy a meal and he didn't tell his mom about it cuz he knew that she would get mad and he said I didn't want to get treated the way Timothy was being treated. And this is a common thing with people that abused children and they have multiple children. The other children see how one is being treated and they don't want to be treated like that so they just go along with whatever the parent says. He's still knew better and again this is an excuse for him or anything like that but I am willing to at least give him a little bit of credit because he really seemed like he was trying to come clean and do the right thing during his testimony on the stand. He knows that he was messed up for doing what he did. They both are. It's sick. I know foster care is not always the best situation but they should have just let him go into foster care. He definitely is mentally and emotionally very fixated/dependent on everything his mother believes and says and he is damaged by everything he had to watch and experience during his childhood and youth in this broken family - including his biological father, his stepmother, his stepfather and all other (step/half) siblings and other children. On top it seems as if he himself has some kind of disability (he mentions OCD, but I can recognize traits of high functioning ASD in him as well). Yes, he is technically an adult, but he is mentally and emotionally in a very unhealthy state of dependency and had very great issues making decisions totally by himself without wanting to please his mum. Everything this young man does seems to be intertwined with his mother; he seems to act as if he is kind of a partner, instead of the son, another child, an older brother. 🤨😭 Very, very sad ...
Nevertheless, he can distinguish between right and wrong - and he has no awareness of injustice; very many sociopathic and psychopathic traits. The level of entitlement that he shows when telling, what he and his mother did, hoe threw behaved towards his younger brother and the constant defending/emphasizing that his mother "is not a bad person at all" is enormous. The whole case is very, very tragic and a final example of how easily parents can harm their children for their entire lives, turn them into murderers and have them killed - and still try to see themselves as the victims and everything and everyone else as the culprit to represent.

As Shanda is fake crying all I can think of is how the night before she dragged a dying Timothy to that closet, told him he owed her an apology, left, came back to make him face the camera and held his mouth shut. "See, dummy! You don't need to open your mouth to breathe!" Then left him alone to die.

Yessss, the fake crying is the worst. People are just so stupid. When people are really upset and crying, it doesn’t come from the upper chest. It comes from the gut. It’s so easy to see the difference. Of course not to mention no water coming out of the eyes. ( that’s a really important part.) JS! Lol.
So glad she will never see the light of day again. Ever!

The really unbelievable thing is, that none of this should have happened. Shanda's parental rights were going to be terminated due to a hearing in the previous state, due to inappropriate cuddling, touching and CSA. Considering Timothy's problems, inability to understand concepts and desire to please, can anyone other than me see a reason "why" Timothy would be afraid of the bathroom, especially at night? In a house with this many children, where would the most private place be to take a child to be alone? Shanda took the offer the court extended, which was to move out of the residence, and state and relocate. Timothy's father was the one most to blame here. He knew Shand a was an abuser, and that CPS and the court system had already ruled on this. He should have been sent to another relative or foster care.
So, considering the background, and Timothy being part and parcel of why she had to leave her home and 4 children to begin with, how do you think she is going to be, to have to have the sole care of this boy who was part of the reason she was dragged through the courts before. Now, she is almost an attorney, yet she can't enroll him in school or even let the court where she works know he is there, because the minute Pandora's box is opened, the whole house of cards will fall. I think her care of him was partially revenge and resentment, and partly shame that someone as brilliant as she felt herself to be, had given birth to a child with all of these problems. Deep down I don't think she believed he had these problems, because that would be a reflection on her.

Paul is not some brainwashed helpless victim. Timothy was the victim. Paul knew exactly what he was doing; Shanda did not brainwash him or have to force him. He was aggressive toward Timothy even before they both moved in with Shanda. &; also, per his siblings, Paul was a generally mean and manipulative individual. I see Paul playing the same victim crap like Shanda to get sympathy; the only difference is, he’s clearly better at it. He’s right where he belongs, just like Shanda.
