I'm sure he could be scary if provoked. I myself am 6'6" and around 250. Obviously no Brian Shaw. But f you're big enough you don't have to be mean or scary.
Brian check out Mark Phillips owner of MADHOUSE GYM in the Atlanta Area. I sold him some vintage Nautilus machines in 2019. He was putting together a Museum and now has a separate vintage gym for his members who love the old equipment. Great Man and very knowledgeable. He’s traveled all over the USA buying and I think he might sell sometimes.
You are damn right, there is nothing like the sound of squatting with deep dish 45's ! My jaw hit the ground when he showed the wall of plates and vintage dumbbells, been a very long time since using the globes.
The York Deep Dish plates are the original, and the best! And yes I remember that unique clanging sound of those 45s hitting each other- no other brand of plates sound precisely like the Yorks. I remember seeing them for the first time in 9th grade in my high school gym in the 70s. Your buddy Steve had these plates in beautiful pristine condition! Memories… and I feel and understand everything that Brian spoke about regarding these York plates…..fantastic nostalgia !!!
Even though you were retired, your passion for weightlifting remains thanks for showing us how to be great talent plus work ethic equals greatness. You have to both to be great you are a inspiration to many people me included having CP. I know I’m never be a strong man, but I still have the ability to lift weights now I have to put in the work to be great.
Brian's love for the history and evolution of weights and machines is really cool. he has an amazing collection. also, it's really funny seeing brian around normal-sized people. really shows how crazy huge the guy is
Bro, Devon must be proud. Literally turning your truck into a mobile armwrestling gym so you can work out on the road. Awesome. Edit: imagine waking up and seeing Brian Shaw working out in the parking lot through your hotel room window.
First Olympic weights I worked out with, for a year in 1979-1980 were the York Deep Dish weights at the base weight room in St Hubert Quebec......loved those weights compared to the skinny flat york plates today....I am so happy you got these....I have such fond memories of making some serious gains training with them...and the beautiful distinct sound they make when they clank together when sliding them on the bar together...and the clanking rattle of them while doing reps on the squats....nothing else sounded the same!
Nice one Brian, thought it was just me!! Been tracking down some black Weider 1 inch 25Lb plates i first benched 200Lb with back in the early 80's - 17 at the time four plates either side, home gym. Man I jumped around that garage afterwards, that sound of the air getting trapped on the plates, sweet, sweet music, keep up the good work, smash that armwrestling training!!!! Kev UK
Brian you should open a gym called the strength museum. Have each room be an era of strength equipment, offer tours, and then have the fee for training be at the end. Supervised of course to maintain the safety of the equipment, but that could be a Mecca for people to come to.
I love road side workouts. When I merchandised I took a barbell and plates with me and would deadlift in the hotel parking lot. Then I went out flatbedding and I used the 20x24ft tarps to do power clean and presses, squats, power snatches, stone to shoulder, and carries. Now I'm dry vanning. I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to attach a barbell to this truck, and carry my weight plates. I may be able to remove some dividers and use the side compartments. I unload the trailer and I'm home on weekends so I'm hiking, river swimming(Arkansas in the mountains) and lifting so I'm waiting a few weeks to adjust to unloading the trailers. But the plan is to add in a power clean and jerk with front squats workout, and a power snatch with front squats, during the work week, and then do heavy deadlifts and barbell rows when I'm home. I'm getting a lot if push and chest from moving the frieght on rollers but I'm considering adding push-ups or banded standing chest press when needed. Long story short I absolutely love roadside lifting and really hope it catches on and more travelers and truckers start doing it. It keeps the back strong and pain free, done right.
I’m from Pennsylvania and currently living in Texas, and I totally prefer PA weather, I’d rather experience the 4 seasons than being in the heat 90% of the year
Living in PA york stuff is OG as a powerlifter I remember winning 242 title back in 2001 with those old large yellow 100 lbs yorks . Good stuff big man
Lotsa time with those plates in the 80s! Some of my first C&Js were executed using those deep dish York 45s. Yep! The sound! That's the sound of gravity about to take a vacation as Doug Cooney once said on ABC's Wide World of Sports...😊
Due to YT's, Brian & Rob @VintagePlatesPGG & a couple of others, I have grown a long-distance (just under 7,500 miles or just under 12,000KM) love for vintage Yorks, seeing this video I am very jealous that there are so many still able to be located/purchased. I bet Brian would love a 'MARS' 45lb plate, I've never seen 1 in real life, just in video when Brian & Joel went on that Kansas City road trip to get that 350lb dumbbell.
Ive said it before, the Ford Excursion is a road trip king. Unbelievably comfortable to drive, and the powerstroke gets surprisingly good mpg. Plus, being able to seat 7-9 people means you can pack plenty lmao
My little brother has a 400lb York Olympic set and added 2 25kg bumper plates. Bought them back in the late 70's when they were all USA made and still affordable.
I’ve been waiting for a video like this 😂 I knew he went on a road trip recently because he posted a truck pull in some parking lot on his Instagram story
I think the future business will be a huge Brian Shaw Gym and Antiques Museum somewhere there in Colorado! Need to go find the foundry/people/family that made the stuff!
People in the hotel: "Is that large man still trying to jump start his truck with that rip cord?" LOL All kidding aside, that is an awesome idea. I usually bring some bands and handles when I go on vacation, just in case the hotel gym isn't up to par, but this takes it to the next level!
