The final boss fight left such a huge impression on me. Little 6 year old me had gotten to the last phase of the the fight. I didn't know I had to use Paula's pray ability at the time, and I refused to use the player's guide. I wanted to beat the game by myself. But I was almost out of items, and the party's PP was running low. In a desperate attempt, I used the Pray command in hopes of restoring some health. Then the first scene in Saturn Valley played. Freaking out, I kept praying and praying. I was almost heartbroken when the prayers stop reaching anyone. Then, when my name appeared on the screen, I flipped. I ran to my mom and dragged her to the TV. I wanted to show her that I was directly helping out Ness and his friends. It's memories like this that make Earthbound on of my favorite games of all time!

29:11 This moment hit me harder than anything else in the game.
Frank is your first big bad guy. He was a mean, ol' gangster who controlled the streets, bribed the police, straight up pulled a knife on you and even tried to blast you down with a robot. He was by all means an awful person. And yet, your actions helped turn his life around. He abandoned the thug life, even got a decent job. Hell, he's even a bit nice to you when you meet him again while he's on duty.
Frank has no reason to like you at all. You smashed his face, you smashed his robot, and you smashed the pretty successful (if criminal) life and career he had for himself. And yet, his first instinct when hearing Paula's plea for help is to stop what he's doing, huddle to a corner of his restaurant, and pray for the safety of the boy who set him straight.
This is what had hurt Giygas so much. The idea that even someone as despicable as Frank could become a good man.

Not a lot of people seem to talk about this, but it's rather strange how the screen goes static as Giygas meets his demise. After all, he is not mechanical.
Then you remember that Ness and his friends are robots at that point, so the static actually comes from them, showing just how powerful the energy of Giygas' destruction is. Of course this is obvious since they're lying on the ground, completely scrapped after the battle, but I find it a cool detail that's overlooked sometimes.

I think that some of Giygas' cries out to Ness make him seem... Innocent. Like, "It hurts" and "I'm so sad", are just a shout for help. His search for power has destroyed him to the point that what little good remains of him is so small, so lonely, so scared. He not only lost his mind, but he's also tearing himself apart just to get it back. Like Chugga said, he's being tormented by the evil that he is, and his fear and his guilt is so strong. He is not his own being, and his utter urge to destroy is backed up by a tiny plea for help. "...go... b... a... c... k..." "It's not right... not right... not right..."

A lot of people like to say, "I found a huge plot-hole! The 8 melodies never did anything!"
Ever wonder how Paula was able to speed her prayer to everyone on Earth? Remember how Ness, learning all 8 melodies, united his mind with Earth? I like to think that Paula channeled her prayers through Ness, whose mind is connected with all of Earth. That, plus they wouldn't have met all those people if it wasn't for their quest. It's about the journey, not the destination.

Personally, what I think, is that if Earthbound is a game about growing up, Giygas symbolizes loss of innocence. When you realize that the world is much scarier and crueler than you were led to believe as a child. That's why when Ness defeats Giygas, he's so much stronger. He's seen the worst things of the world, and powered through it all.

Ok but, can we take a brief moment to appreciate the Giygas fight.
Like, first you have the whole shtick with Po(r)k(e)y, which is the complete and utter definition of unnerving. His odd, semi-childlike and semi-overly mature dialogue. His constant reminders that he is absolutely terrified as to what’s going on and not only doesn’t care, but loves it. The thought of what he literally just snuck off to go do (*sob*).
Then, he switches off the Devil’s Machine, and oooohhh boy things go a different direction.
Those horrifying backgrounds, that droning music, the utter incomprehensibility of Giygas period. And above all, that dialogue. Everything he says is conflicting, he’s literally tearing himself apart, and the universe is coming down with it. He is utter and straight evil power, not a thought in its twisted head other than destroy and its last shreds of its past. And god, what he says...
    Then there’s the Prayers.
Mother has been a series that blatantly shows the absolute evil that humanity can possess (and no game showed it further than Mother 3). However, scenes like this show just how _pure_ humanity can be. They all had different thoughts. You had an ex-thug thinking about that cool kid who he met that one time. You have a little boy who dearly misses his friend and fears for his life. A kingdom that thought for a moment that their nobel ruler had died. A group of children who miss that cool older girl, and parents who miss her and worry for her sake. And, of course, a “Mother”, whose son left on an epic, life-threateningly dangerous journey. She supports him how she can, but obviously misses him terribly and is terrified for his well-being.
And what do all these people do at these thoughts? They Pray.
All across the world, these people were united under one thought: let these children be safe.

I love how its the prayer to Ness's mom that fatally wounds Giygas (going off the soundtrack names for each part Giygas's battle)
… its pretty much a loop around back to mother 1, with Giygas being extremely hurt by the power of the love between a mother and child.
I'm petty sure whatever was left of the old Giygas/Giugue felt the love between Ness and his mom in that prayer, which brought him back a final time, to him and Maria.
That alone was enough to strike a mortal blow to his already destroyed psyche. (I mean heck, the eight melodies are even playing during that prayer!)

I find Pokey more terrifying than Giygas. He was Ness’s childhood friend, and throughout the course of the story, Ness and you, the player, witness Porky slowly become a fighter for Giygas until you fight Giygas himself. Pokey constantly ridicules you on so many different things. He’s practically making all the decisions for Giygas. He even lives beyond Giygas’s defeat. Then you learn what he’s done in Mother 3.

Porky was one who find Gyigas and attempt to use his power for own gain, until Ness bring him to senses. Watching something doesn't compare to the satisfaction of doing it myself (although Emile makes me laugh harder and still stay informative and detailed with each new LP). Knowing that a movie ends well makes me wonder what will happen between the lowest point and the climax. Even if someone gives me a summary of a movie, they probably left something out, and even if they didn't, they'd have to be a veteran author (and have a lot of time on their hands) to describe it in its full glory. I know that isn't a widely held opinion, but that's why spoilers just don't bother me.

Pirated games at the time tended to use big generic cartridges, and so the game would check if the cartridge it was on was bigger than it should be, and just show a screen reminding you that piracy is bad instead of loading the game. You could get past this by changing the game's code, but the game could find out you did this and instead of throwing you back out, would just fuck with you until the devil's machine opened, then delete your saves.

(Mother 1 spoilers) I've grown to feel really bad for Giygas, he was raised with love as a baby, lost all that, went to invade Earth decades later, got reminded of his past emotions through hearing the song that was once a lullaby to him and all the conflicting emotions quite literally ripped him apart, turning him into this. This mindless, not comprehensive state of destruction made out of negativity. He is seen as nothing as this horrifying evil force and then he's dead. I really wish more knew about the real Giygas aka Giegue. I also hope he's in Smash as possibly Mewtwo's echo, the poor cat alien thing needs some more love, haha.
Anyway, this game's ending is absolutely beautiful, thank you Emile for playing it once again after all these years, and thank you Iwata for saving it.

Something that I just thought of, and I've never heard anyone who I've talked to about EarthBound bring up before is this: Pokey states Giygas IS the evil energy. And that is something I find very interesting, because every time you beat back the evil energy that was manipulating a city, you were defeating the final boss before you knew you were even fighting the final boss. Sure you weren't getting rid of him, but you were pushing the most powerful person in the universe back and not letting him gain an inch all the way back in the early parts of your adventure.
And when you look back at it, that gives Giygas even more of the presence that he already had. Just giving a villain a presence in a game without having him physically show up is hard. I honestly think the writers did this beautifully just by injecting this one detail. Changing it from him being the source to literally being the energy itself. It makes it feel much more like instead of sending people after you, that he was physically manipulating people to attack you that, while you couldn't see him, he was there in every fight you were having. And that in my mind is brilliant.

    Emile kept praying.
    All of us kept praying.
I think that, right there, is one of many great testaments to how much Emile has changed over the past decade of doing this. Instead of (arguably) selfishly proclaiming himself to be the hero, instead he gets everyone involved. “That’s right, guys, I just saved the world, and so can you if you play Earthbound!” sounds slightly arrogant now, in context to this redone LP.
Emile... wasn’t himself back then. He was quieter, more vulgar with a tendency to swear more often as well as make dirty awful sexual jokes, had more of a tendency to ramble on and go on tangents that had nothing to do with the game itself and just were used to fill what would otherwise be dead air because he had no idea what to talk about, he considered all the info and backstory and lore on the games he played as “useless knowledge”, he talked and made mocking remarks during cutscenes and tried to rush his way through text, all because he thought nobody would care.
But... I’m glad he doesn’t do that anymore. I’m glad that I can watch his stuff or play it in the background and be able to both see and hear how he’s changed for the better. He’s revealed a compassionate heart, a wealth of knowledge, and a love of puns and positivity that’s practically contagious and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m glad, ever thankful, that I found you in April of 2009. You were the first ever Let’s Player I ever found, and it’s been amazing to watch you grow from that point onward. I honestly don’t know what I’d do if I hadn’t found you, because no matter what, you never fail to make me laugh or at least smile on the worst of days.

Wall of text incoming: (Not that exciting, but kinda something emotional for me)
I remember I was dating someone for 4 years. I know: that's not that long, but it was a long time for me, and it was during an important time in my life (ya know: college, finding myself, loved ones getting sick...). This person was NOT a gamer by any means, but I introduced her to EarthBound, and she liked it. She started this game when we first dated, and finished it right at the very end; we broke up when she had just about an hour's worth left of EarthBound, so we spent the rest of that day finishing the game for some closure--there were a lot of emotions that day, as you could imagine. EarthBound isn't just one of my favorite games, it's my favorite work of fiction, and EarthBound came to me during ANOTHER important time in my life (ya know: middle school, friendships, crushes...). So I knew this game like the back of my hand and must have beaten it at least a dozen times over the years. But man... This game's ending was so much heavier that day...
We had a fun relationship, and it was awesome to me that this game was always there--every once in a blue moon we'd settle down, have a cozy night and make some SLIGHT progress towards finishing this game. We started our adventure together as Ness started his, we had our rough patches as Ness did, and overcame our issues as Ness did. Watching everything wrap up, having the main characters we've grown to love LITERALLY PRAY as they potentially leave their lives behind to face the unknown, and then having them all look back on their adventure to say goodbye and go back to their normal lives... That never hit me so hard until that day. As much as it hurt, that was the absolute perfect way to end such a big part of my life. I don't even know what else to say about this. I'm an English teacher and I can't even describe how otherworldly this moment was.
I'm fine, we're friends, and we've both moved on. I just wanted to share that because I've always loved this ending but over the past year, this has meant so much more to me.

Otacon464 Oh, shoot, sorry! Poor wording on my part. Xenoblade Chronicles was when I first played it, and always will be my favorite video game of all time. Though, I would say that the game also isn’t explicitly for everyone as different people have wildly different taste. Granted, because it doesn’t appeal to a large demographic, I think this is why it is such an amazing game for the aspects that go appreciated by people whose tastes it aligns with.

joe Well, mainly, what sold me was two things mainly. The first of these was the first episode, actually. This is purely because it got me to actually pick the game back up after I realized why I started playing it in the first place, the opening sequence. However, the moment that really sold me was him throughout the series showing the little details. It really showed just how intuitive EarthBound is as a game, and how it really is a full realization of the visual medium itself.

    • @vernaiko9536
      @vernaiko9536 6 лет назад

Otacon464 it’s just like I stated in my response. It was poor wording. Does it really matter this much? I edited the original comment since apparently it is so integral that it be changed. And let me also restate what I said earlier. Even if I didn’t like Xenoblade Chronicles, what relevance does this even have to the original comment? I’m sorry if I’m being a little bit curt here, however it is a bit frustrating when somebody responds multiple times with something that barely has anything to do with the original comment.

TheAutisticTamerGirl i don’t think the ENTIRE thing was solely based on a movie scene. Itoi did say something about it, but I think he meant that the movie inspired the intensity of the design. I feel theres a lot more behind the design besides that, based off mother 1

TheAutisticTamerGirl it’s not outright based on the scene, or really at all. The truth is, Itoi walked into a horror movie's consensual sex scene (albeit it ends in murder) while he was VERY young, and it traumatized and unsettled him. He wanted to recreate that feeling of uncertainties and inherent “this is wrong” feeling in the player. He succeeded

I see everyone putting in these heartfelt messages for our friend Emile. Well its my turn.
    Dear Emile/Chugga A. Conroy.
I found out about you. 10 years ago. I was 10 years old. Around 3rd Grade watching your videos. I got internet that year and this guy is playing a game from a character I only know from smash. I have my love of the mother series from you Emile. You feel like an old friend who I grew up with. I'm 20 now and you still bring the same smile to my face that I had when I was alone and young. Thanks again for the everything Emile/Chugga. You mean a lot to me as a person. You helped my development as a person when I didn't have anyone who I felt was like me and I can't appreciate that enough. Thank you for everything and here's to 10 more years.
Thank You. - Another Fan (Pedro From AZ)

Time to throw my story of Chugga since everyone else is!
I first found your channel when i was in elementary school, maybe 4th grade? I had only recently discovered RUclips for myself and wanted to know if anyone out there was playing my favorite game, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, and lo and behold, there you were. Outside of how helpful your guide was, i fell in love with your style of content. It was the perfect balance of humor and information. Whether or not you know, you've helped me through some of the worst times in my life. Me and my father, we dont really have a good relationship. He didn't treat me like my brother or sister, who he deeply cared for and was proud of while i was just left out of his thoughts, even though we were all as average as you can get. I'd find myself coming back to your videos time and time again to remind myself that there is something happier in the world, even if it's far away. Every game you've played has impacted me in the best ways possible. I could go on for hours talking about it, but this comment is already long as it is. After being a fan of yours for so long, you've made me realize something. I want to be just as good of a person as you. I want to bring as much joy and happiness to this world as possible. As weird as this might be to say about a RUclipsr, you inspire me to be the way I am. Emile, i can't say this enough, Thank You. You bring more happiness into this world than anyone could even imagine.

I don't think a lot of people understand just how... Truly disturbing the Gigyas fight is. Like, you can see it when watching this video, I know I did, but You can't FEEL it. My first time fighting Gigyas Was in the dead of night, and it was... entrancing. Not in a comfortable way, not in a terrifying way, I just felt... numb the entire fight. And I'd seen the fight before on RUclips before I got my own cart. Seeing this off of a CRT in the middle of the night just... does things to the mind, I tell ya. When I beat him, I literally just sat there for a few minutes. It was like I didn't even know what happened. I don't even remember Pokey's last taunt.
One of the most unforgettable moments in gaming, for me.

There was this one time I replayed Earthbound on the Super Famicom (The Japanese Version not the European one) and when I saw that last scene while holding using the original hardware, I got a new sense of how terrorfying it must've been for the kids in the 90s.
I was shook after playing it on an EMULATOR, much less looking at a CRT at the dead of Night on a 1990s weekend as a child! I'd be remembering Earthbound for all the wrong reasons.
I really want to see someone talk about that battle from the og Japanese perspective. I wonder how it would be.

Yeah, I just finished this game a few days ago in the middle of the night, and I felt the same as you, I couldn't even really say anything during or afterwards. I don't know if it was my posture on my seat (cause the cables on the SNES Classic are super short), but I had that same feeling of numbness in my arms and face. Not fear, really, just complete stillness from the trippy visuals, the mocking dialogue, and the dissonant music. Kind of makes me wish I'd never seen images of him since he's the ubiquitous "nightmarish final boss". My younger brother (who was watching me play through the whole game) had never seen images of him, so for him it was an utter surprise, he was shocked. What a uniquely great game.

You should have talked about the Anti-piracy measure Nintendo creates in this battle.
If anyone doesn’t know what this, it takes place when Pokey states “you will be just another meal to him.” and before the next Phase the game will freeze and the check will happen, then the games resets, if the check fails, all your save data will be wiped completely!

It’s worth noting that the anti-piracy check is multi-tiered. If I remember correctly, the first check it does is before you start playing and it gives you an on-screen warning. Then it starts spawning enemies at a much higher rate than usual, then the Giygas thing happens.

It's not that the game freezes, checks then resets. The game checks after you exit out of Pokey's dialogue box during that scene, then freezes. You have to hard-reset the game yourself; your save data is still completely wiped, though.

I love Giygas as a villain, but I honestly feel like he wouldn't be nearly as cool without his backstory explained in the first Mother game.
Also, my theory as to what Giygas represents, if you flip his sprite 180 degrees (upside down), he looks like a very distorted version of his form back in Mother (Earthbound Beginnings), keep in mind that Giygas is "happy" when he hears the prayers that are killing him, that's because it reminds him of the love Maria gave to him when he was young.

Prior to this I only knew Giygas as a silly swirly who always is the #1 spot in a 'creepy bosses in non-creepy games' list. Was always wondering what the fuzz was about, and now I got that answer.
I am very happy to have reached the end of this LP. Giygas is simply amazing. Calling him one of the best final bosses in Video Game history is rightfully earned. The build-up is perfect, the soundtrack is incredible, Pokey as surprise villain does a brilliant job, Giygas is unsettling for all the right reasons and the way to beat him is beautifully done. Even in lets-play format which normally makes bosses much less personal and interesting, Giygas loses none of his presence or power.

As for Giygas as a character, I feel the series is mainly about his tragedy, being raised by two parents, one who would love him, and one who would use him. And before his death, having to re-experience the pain of losing love all over again.

Absolutely. It also sort of makes me feel... sad for him? Like, he is the embodiment of evil, the exact opposite of good, yet in this fight he gives the impression that he WANTS that good. He wants it, but he can't have it. It literally HURTS him when he is confronted by such goodness. He no longer has a choice in the matter, even though I feel a longing coming from him. This is my theory on the death of Geigue, & the birth of Giygas.
    Mother 1 Spoilers ahead:
Maria & George are kidnapped to raise Geigue. In doing so, Geigue gains attachment for humans, & for earth. He is only defeated in Mother 1 by the 8 melodies, which remind him of what he loves. It is my belief, that in his sadness, he begins conquering the rest of the universe, & all his collected hate & power eventually kills him. By the time of Earthbound, Geigue is dead. Now there is only Giygas, the embodiment of evil. All that remains of Geigue is his regret & shame of his actions. Knowing how many lives he’s ruined, & the things he’s destroyed. It was this that killed Geigue. The sheer loneliness & hatred of himself caused his death, & the creation of Giygas. As a being of hate & sadness, it cannot comprehend the positive energy of the prayers. This is why when it’s loaded with so much positive energy, it implodes on itself.

Earthbound was the predecessor Undertale was born from, but Undertale still managed to be its own thing despite what ideas it borrowed from Earthbound.
And not gonna lie, I started crying at the prayer scenes.

Chuggaconroy, I honestly can’t thank you enough. This let’s play really taught me to not overlook old and weird-looking 90s games, because as you said, this game is timeless. You and this game have taught me about friendship and to keep going through with something. I never would have even thought about getting this game and the SNES Classic if it wasn’t for you. I just might save up my money and buy it! And I love how you know so much about not just this game, but all of the games you play. Sometimes, I even skip back to listen to what you said about an Actual Octopus or palette swaps. Long story short, I just want to thank you for this amazing LP. You truly deserve more subscribers.

So I got this notification literally 30 seconds ago, and found a rush of nostalgia, then guilt. I remember watching the first, maybe 20 episodes while playing earthbound myself alongside his schedule, but then I stopped watching. I guess I just forgot about them. But now, as the last episode comes up, I remembered watching the first series, binge watching them intently, wishing that instead I could have an experience of waiting for the next episode and not watching older ones. But now, that chance is gone. So today, I’ll try to watch all of the episodes I missed to relive it. Thank you chuggaconroy, when watching this series you helped me remember about 5 years ago having a great experience seeing you play this wonderful game. I’ll miss this series, knowing that I had the chance to watch it when it was released, but I’ll come back to it every now and again.

There actually is a bit of "in Japan" that's relevant to this video: in MOTHER 2, Pokey consistently refers to Giygas as "Master Giygas" throughout his opening speech, but near the very end drops the "master" and refers to him by something along the lines of "just plain ol' Giygas" as a sign of disrespect. In EarthBound, Pokey constantly refers to Giygas without the suffix save for the one line that reads "Master Giygas, no, Giygas is no longer the wielder of evil," thereby losing a bit of nuance.
(and yes, I know that Pokey and Giygas are called "Porky" and "Giyig" in Japan and that "Porky" is a more accurate translation than "Pokey," to the point where Pokey's English name was retroactively changed to "Porky" in the English release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I'm just trying to be consistent with the terminology of EarthBound's localization in case anyone reading this is unfamiliar with the Japanese version)

I think what hits the most is that it wasn't really a massive battle that saved the world. It was an army of smaller fights. It was Ness befriending Frank. It was Jeff being such a good friend to Tony. It was Paula being a role model to the children at the preschool. It was Poo being admired by his people. It was the fight to stop Carpainter. It was the multiple times they helped out the Runaway Five. It was the battle against Master Belch to save Saturn Valley. It was their destroying the Mani Mani Statue. It was entering Stonehenge and freeing everyone captured there. Every person that Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo met and helped on their journey responded by praying, and giving their own hopes to counteract Giygas. Including us. Those kids touched peoples' hearts, and in their hour of need, those people gave back.

Oh man, so much to say, I'll at least save spoilers for as they come but get ready
First, I always liked Ness' robot design. I really wish it could be a costume in Smash
Second: Something i think people never get about timelines here: you are not outright fighting the giygas of the past: rather, the giygas of the present fled to the past, and you're chasing him
Third: I'd say the pallette swap can't quite be helped: these are suppossed to be stronger versipns of giygas' army that we just happened to have already fought.
Fourth: I love the fan theory Giygas is actually showing ninten's face, even if it might not really be the case
Fifth: I really hope Pokey means business/stop exisiting gets into smash ultimate
Fifth and a half: I also really want alien giygas in smash somehow, or at least giygas in some way.
Sixth: my personal theory to Pokey is, he started as just another human chump to giygas, at least through fourisde. However, at some point, he starts getting more power; he's not scared of Ness like Giygas is because he's grown up next to ness for years. Giygas goes insane out of pressure and fear, but Pokey remains semi sane because he's not as inherently freaked out by Ness. He's the one who can start calling shots as giygas needs to stick to the devil's machine. In the end, he totally destroys giygas' sanity for his own personal gain. So while Giygas is still the main villain, he's so twisted that Porky is the strongest threat who can call the shots by the end.
Seventh: I love how Flowey's speech basically ripped off Pokey's, and I don't care it is a wholesale ripoff.
Eight: somehow, I've gotten just used enough to giygas' true form to not be scared at the sight, but the battle as a whole is still incredibly disturbing. And the fetus theory is bullcrap (what isn't is what happens if you look at it upside down: it looks like his alien head. Very likely to be unintentional but fun none-theless)
Ninth: there's a detail between giygas' attacks in mother 1 and 2 I like: in mother 1, it's inexplicable because you know he's doing something to your mind with his incredible power, but you have no idea. in mother 2, you can't comprehend anything about Giygas, period.
Tenth: Speaking of Flowey ripoffs, in general: calling out to help, and "Giygas's defense became unstable" sounds awfully familiar. And again, I love both the fights so much.
eleventh: My theory about what giygas is meant to look like isn't much, just, this is pure power and evil, trying to manifest without a body that was too weak for such purposes.
Twelth: no, he isn't directly based on the movie itoi saw necessarily. It's simply that a young itoi had a traumatic experience, incredibly disturbing to his developing mind, and giygas is meant to be that disturbance visualized and tried to bring about in the player. HE DAMN WELL SUCEEDED!
Thirtheenth: I do kinda love the general pray phrase music, as it's actually the closest to music
fourteenth: prayer absorbed by darkness. One last thing that got referenced.
Fifthteenth: "all of us." Emile, that is beautiful, thank you so much
Sixteenth: I love Giygas' defeat. no massive explosion, no disintegrate into dust. he's just so unstable and damaged, he blips out of the universe. All the while, your robot bodies break down, ending with that last AMAZING line to cap it off.
Seventeenth: and for severe mood whiplash my bad joke time: I hope andonuts doesn't go insane and start murdering everyone, at least if something happened to our souls and timelines somehow.
Eighteenth: the end world map theme: it really is beautiful, and a wonderful tune as you tour a saved, cured world.
Ninteenth: ending off on a shot of home. Magnifiscent.
Twentieth: we’re not done yet, and I’ll say it again, but Emile; this was a wonderful ride. Seeing how you evolved, seeing your love for the game, seeing my own love for the series and it’s surrounding fans lighted higher than ever before. It’s been a magical experience, and I cannot thank you enough for it.

It kinda makes sense to me the way his final portrait is, those spots that make up the "nose" and "lips" seem waaaay to convieniently placed to just be a random patern that just happen to form the striking silhuette of a fetus as seen in ultrasound. 2 things: 1) Chugga, you should seriously be a voice actor. I love how you give each character a voice and I’ve even started doing that in the games I’ve played too. Your voices for Giygas and Pokey are downright chilling and it’s just another one of the millions of reasons why you’re my favorite youtuber.
2nd thing: even though I started watching your videos around the time you were doing super paper Mario, your battle against giygas was the first video of yours I ever saw. I found it in my suggestions a solid 8 or so years ago while I was watching autriachofflame’s Top 10 most disturbing video game bosses. I wanted to see more about this embodiment of evil and your video had the fight against him so I watched it. I had no idea what was going on at the time but I still remember that you gave Paula a calorie stick after the fight and that Giygas also managed to Flash OHKO Paula.
I watched your videos on and off since, and even have a very funny memory of bursting out into laughter when you did that sinister Elmo voice for Magalor in Kirby’s Return to Dreamland and woke up my grandparents. But I became a very dedicated fan when you played Pokémon XD, a game that I played with my cousin and brother together whenever we went over to said cousin’s house since we didn’t have a GameCube of our own. We named the player character ‘Mya’ (which is my name btw) thinking they were female and we were utterly mortified when we found out that the character was in fact a boy.
I think my fondest memory is of you playing Xenoblade Chronicles. From it, you allowed me to become interested in a game I knew nothing of and would have probably cared nothing for. Now i have met my two closest friends from it. Xenoblade is now a core part of my identity. I’ve also dived deep into the world of Xenogears too (I’m trying to get into Xenosaga but it’s just not clicking for me, sorry to all of you guys who like Saga). Probably one of the most precious things I’ll remember is actually crying at the ending cutscene of Xenoblade Chronicles. I’m hardly an emotional person but I just felt this sense of calm and relief. We finally did it. And now we face the unknown of what lies beyond the false god, quite literally the title if you take the Japanese name of the organization BLADE. Xeno, unknown, and Beyond the Logos Artificial Destiny Emancipator (such an interpretation is brought to you by Miiks go check his Xeno lore videos they’re amazing).

    "What Giygas definitely is"
Well, he WAS an alien. I dont know what he is now, but in the original Mother he was simply an alien that was supposed to lead an invasion to Earth.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 лет назад +3

First of all Emile did make LP of first game. He omit details for dramatic reasons, but he know who is correct in whole debate. He only point out that there is such debate (some people still deny fact that Gyigas has backstory).
Secondary, Itoi did deny rape thing. He only said that Earthbound ending was inspired by his experience when he walk as a kid on adult movie. Supporters of abortion theory call it rape scene, but after topic become hot he deny whole thing plus confirm that it was just generic murder scene.

It is not. It is logic conclusion for proving abortion theory, what as we know was debunked by Itoi alongside whole rape thing. But as people still deny that Gyigas has backstory what contradict him as real personification of evil, they also deny that it wasn't a rape scene even if all facts deny this interpretation. Please, don't turn this debate in autism 0_0

    • @AirahsELL
      @AirahsELL 6 лет назад +1

@@TheRezro my point was that Giygas was inspired by Itoi walking into The Policeman and the Dismembered Girl, a horror film, when he was young and watched a scene that made him uncomfortable; namely, the choking and then chopping up of a woman. The abortion theory comes as a result of him maybe saying in an interview that at the time when he saw the scene, he thought it was a rape scene. All that matters is how it made him feel and not what that scene actually was or what he thought it was.

Then declared victory when Itoi mention seeing scene from adult movie as a child, to by shut down immediately after he call those claims ridiculous (because they are).
And for fuck sake, again! He never said that he though it was rape scene! I did tell you that several times for now! That was what crazies only presumed, because it was convenient for they dumb theory. So don't make my question your intelligence now! The piles of barf were puking on each other and burping in each others faces, and no one was attacking so most of us stayed confused, or were crying meaning a normal attack would be less likely to happen. I was trying to run but kept slipping in their puke so I couldn't. The smell was so awful and I ended up thinking about my the clean smell of my bedsheets after mom had just washed them, and I started getting homesick along with the nausua..." "Ness had to fight Master Belch on his own, and all because Paula prayed twice." *Paula appears* "I found a psi caramel in a present! Let's pray for more good luck!" "No! I mean, uh, we don't get luckier when you pray, the best we can get is a a small chance of PP restore if we already have luck on our side."

Emile, you are incredible. This series has been one of my favorites of yours. The effort you put in to mention every little detail of every game you play regardless of the scope of such an undertaking is legitimately impressive. I played this game a while back and really enjoyed it but didn’t make it past Scaraba because I just put the game down and forgot to pick it back up. Now, I can say that this is among my favorite games of all time.
Now to go watch your old play through of Mother 3.

You know, ocassionally during this journey, I've entertained the idea in my head of what a potential Earthbound remake would look like. Give the story the treatment it deserves with character that can be more expressive than very basic 16-bit sprites walking around to simulate nervousness or anger.
But then we hit Giygas and all I could think was "How would you even do this in a remake?"
The answer is that you wouldn't. You couldn't. Not a 3D model based remake anyway. Giygas is something born and molded in the limitations of the 16-bit era, and it's easily one of the few things that I think is actually better for it. I don't think you could improve upon this at all. It takes some real skill to craft a final boss, on the SNES no less, that makes you honestly stop and wonder "wait... am I in a creepypasta? Is this even real?" A simple picture with filters placed over it, dialogue and perfectly composed music create an unsettling atmosphere that a lot of dedicated horror games nowadays have trouble matching. It's really something that's horrifyingly magical.

I disagree. 3D games also has effects. It would be literally same thing. The problem with modern horror games is that they are lazy. During PS1 era technical limitations forced creators to do clunky games what work best with the survival horror. But after graphics become better many good creators moved to more profitable genres (it is why people are so pissed about cancellation of last Silent Hill, and despite it action based nature Bloodborne prove that making good modern horror is still possible). If someone would do a remake he should also fuse it with first game. It wasn't needed back then, but nowadays they should flash out Gyigas backstory and Pokey motives and scale of involvement as he is true villain here.
If you ask my largest issue would be that this franchise probably take place in same universe as Pokemon games. They recently become more transparent about that ;D

Well there goes my theory on using the links awakening remake artstyle for earthbound remake... I have no idea how giygas would work with that look

I think it would be possible, but really difficult and really trippy to create a 3D effect like Gigyas... but like imagine a floating disembodied voice talking to you as you pray, staring into the abyss? I don't think it'd be effective as a single voice though, because it'd be tied to an individual, in my head it's more of like a distorted group

The problem with an Earthbound remake especially rears its head in regular battles. The most obvious thought would be to add animations to the enemies, but you can't do that without slowing down battles. Given how the HP system works, slowing battles even by a little bit can turn deadly.

I thought for quite some time once about what a potential Mother series remake would be like, and I have a feeling all these games really would need for a remake is a new coat of paint, as in a 3D-style world, but the same battle system and backgrounds, so basically the entire “tapestry” gets a new coat of paint, and maybe some enemy sprite improvements. However, there is one area that I feel needs no changes from how it was on the NES, and that is the final area, or the Cave of the Past, whatever you call the area after the phase distorter. After all, you’re in the past, and it’d peak Earthbound humor to just use old-style graphics for the past as well as sprites to hammer it home. Plus, then the developers don’t have to try and remake Giygas, because honestly, I think he’s great as he is now.
As for Mother 3, if it ever gets a rerelease on the switch, I don’t really know or care what changes they would have to make, though the Pigmasks would need some better spriting, but I feel like the only thing that I would want in a Mother 3 port is for the Battle Memory to utilize cutouts of the enemies, but like it is totally obvious that they’re cardboard cutouts and it’s not ever acknowledged. That’s it, that’s all I want.

The first time I beat this game, I decided to get a picture postcard at the shop because I never did before. After using it, all it said was “You felt sad and empty.”
This text appears every time it’s used, no matter the time, but it was a really... strange time to see that.
