Soi bj is named after Bill Johnson who opened the first bar in pattaya he now owns the bj holiday inn on soi 3 he is an American who moved to Thailand after the Vietnam war and has lived there for over 50 years

Soi Yodsak is so named after the family who built the street.Soi 6/1 is actually the original soi 6.The street is still in fact privately owned although the city do take care of sorts due to the soi now being an important thoroughfare for traffic wishing to get to beach road from second rd.
You are 100% correct as regards " Soi 6/1 is actually the original soi 6 ".....I still have the calling card from Jimmy Macs Guest house and bar from 1987 and on the back of the card there is a map clearly showing the names of Soi Yodsak and Soi 6
On a tangent, I remember back in the early '70s when I was a fresh-faced young submarine sailor, newly reported to Pearl Harbor Hawaii, directions were more commonly referenced to landmarks rather than compass directions. It made a lot of sense on the island; Waikiki-side was more identifiable than "south". I still do that today when I'm giving directions; "Sukhumvit-side of Second Road, across from Central" seems more immediately identifiable than talking about the east side of Second Road. When I first moved here and was teaching school-age Thai kids, a portion of the curriculum was how to read common maps. I was shocked to need to teach that, but when you grow up using landmark references, "Soi Post Office" makes much more sense than "Soi 13/2". :-)
I looked through the comments but didn't see this. Soi Boomerang isn't from the boomerang shape, it's because where the Naughty Club is now used to be the Boomerang Guest House. Back then, there weren't so many businesses on that little back alleyway, so the Boomerang Guest House was more of an identifiable feature. If you do a Google search for "Boomerang Guest House Pattaya" you can still see the listing on Google Maps right there on the corner.
Good job again ! Really funny sometimes the double names of the same street. Sometimes you can find the influence of 2 cultures, f.e. soi chaiyapoon = soi pothole etc. 😊😊👍🙏
This is another interesting video. I love how each street "soi" are given nick name after a landmark that is well known to local and tourist. Very nice!
Soi BJ is named after American Vet and bar owner Bill Jones. It's said he played a major part in developing the Pattaya bar scene. His sister in law Tip runs the BJ3 Bar @ Walking St & Soi Diamond. She told me he has a resort around Soi 2 with her sister
Spent time around Soi 1-3, but never heard any alternative names for those. That being said, interesting video because I did know about some of those other "alternative" names.

Hi Lukas and Martin. I forgot to mention in my last comments that there is another Soi 14 opposite the junction with Soi Buakhow on the other side of Central Road! Makes you wonder what the city planners where thinking when all these Soi's sprang up? Don't think they had much imagination! 🤔🤔
I remember a bar on soi BJ called BJ bar. I assumed soi named after the bar. This was about 20 years ago. The bar was owned by a guy with initials BJ but there are obvious connotations. It was a US bar with a Vietnam war sort of theme. I think it moved location at some point and then maybe closed.

What about Soi Day and Night up by Tukcom . There used to be a western doctor ( SWISS) on that soi called Dr Olivier ,has since moved out to soi Thep Prasit Road in Jomtien. Excellent doctor .
I'm going to say Soi BJ was named after BJ who owns BJ holiday lodge in Soi 3 he has been there 40 plus years and still walks up and down beach road with his small white dog and a hand towel over his right shoulder. A true Gentleman I've stayed at his place loads of times over the years
@@Rides4Kickz The above poster is correct in that it was named after the owner of BJ Holiday Lodge. But the reason the soi was named after him was that he owned a very popular bar on the corner of that soi. I couldn't find the article online, but have stayed at BJ Holiday Lodge in the past and saw it there. Very nice guy and knows a lot about Pattaya...might be good to interview him for a future video

Hi Lukas and Martin. The ice Soi, - Soi 13 is very familiar to me for many reasons! But it makes you think, because Soi 13/1 and Soi 13/2 as we know are between Second Road and Beach Road! Very confusing! Also, as you enter Soi Buakhow from Central Road ( Pattaya Klang ) there is a street sign saying Soi 15? I think that was the original Soi 15 before naming it Soi Buakhow, as Soi 15 is now further down, where the Hideaway bar is on the same Soi where you live!
@@jeffrussell488 are you saying the street sign as you enter Soi Buakhow from Central Road is 13? If so, now we have 2 in that neighbourhood, and 4 off Beach Road! All very confusing, I wonder what the city planners where thinking, ha ha! 🤔😂
@@williamruby9691 aye the sign entering Buakhao from Klang is 13. @@Rides4Kickz Eating fish on Fridays is a tradition followed by a lot of families in the UK. The idea of swapping meat for fish on Fridays originated from the Christian faith. Many years ago, if you said to bargirls that you've been drinking on soi 6, you'd get a dirty look followed by them saying "Soi S̄kprk" which apparently meant Soi dirty. 😂
Soi 13/3 and 13/4 Used to have the old rectangular signs at the beach end, Pattayaland 1 and 2 . For a couple of weeks back in 200? when the Sois were renamed with numbers, the new 'Ship's Wheel' sign and the old one were both there at the same time. Soi Yensabai also had another name that's almost obscene - just replace the 'n' with the letter 't'
Soi Boomerang - the building behind the camera where you were stood used to be Boomerang Guest House, owned by an Aussie I presume, one of the first businesses to open on the Soi, closed a couple of years ago and converted into a bar.
I once had sangsom and Sprite on bar on corner of lk metro before it was a gogo bar. Had 8,felt great but they wouldn't sell me another one. Was about 20 baht a shot then. I moaned a bit went outside then when the fresh air hit I fell over, done for I was. Great times. Took a few hours and I was okay and back on it. Bri and frei east Yorkshire.
Soi New Plaza, formerly known as Soi 30 baht, is also known as Soi Keeniaow (cheap Charlie). Don't joke about this to the ex-pat patrons though lol. SangSom whiskey (rum) goes for 30-40 baht still around there I believe.
I too have heard Soi New Plaza referred to as Soi Cheap Charlie by a few Thai ladies, presumably for the pre Covid farangs sitting in the bars all day with a cheap large bottle of beer, mainly Chang, served at a cheap price
This is akin to the country living in the USA. Ya, just go down old hwy 95 then make a left at the Johnsons farm on the corner, go a few more miles til old Jimbob’s gas station and turn right then follow it around to where Millie has her sewing business”. Lol..... Love it!!!
A lot of these soi names come from the fact that there was never any maps in English so if we directed anybody to a place we would use well known buildings or landmarks as soi['s, e.g. if we were telling our friends how to find us in the lemon bar we would say go along soi itchyfanny until you come to the Bell and turn left the lemon bar is down on the left. We used to do that in the forces when posted abroad, it was easier than looking for street names among other street furniture even if they had any.
Jomtien Beach--Soi Welcome. Stayed on and around this soi, would love to know what it looks like today from Beach Rd. up==Could you take a ride over there? Jomtien much nicer than Pattaya
Sometimes, you refer to the Darkside of Pattaya. This makes it sound evil, or free of electricity. Can you explain the derivation of the term Darkside?
Diana Dragon restaurant is still on Soi Diana, they rent out apartments as well as selling food (Diana Dragon Apartments) I often lived in the apartments that have balconies facing soi Diana,
Hi Lukas thank you for some super good videos in 2020 I have been following you with great pleasure ever since you started and of course throughout the year 2020, would it be possible that you made a video about how much it has cost you to live in Thailand in 2020 ? you made a good video about how cheap you could live in an emergency, but how much has it cost you to live in Thailand in total, with your travels with your buying and selling motorcycles, move condominium, rent condominium, out to eat i have, as I said, followed all your videos with great interest, I know there is a difference between people how much you go out with ladies and all that, so if I want to live a life like you not with big arm movements but a good life in Thailand, how much does it cost per year in total, it's not because I want to snag in your private finances but how much has gone out of your account to live in Thailand for a year in total expenses, it could be very interesting if you made a video around this, I hope you will have a really good year in 2021 and that you will continue your good work, giving us some super good videos, thank you very much. the best regards from Jan in Denmark

Many years ago, if you said to bargirls that you've been drinking on soi 6, you'd get a dirty look followed by them saying "Soi S̄kprk" which apparently meant Soi dirty. 😂
Yep massage girl last Xmas called it that. Ask😁😉 me where I was going after massage. I said a drink in soi 6, she said soi dirty🤣
👍
Soi 13/3 and 13/4 Used to have the old rectangular signs at the beach end, Pattayaland 1 and 2 . For a couple of weeks back in 200? when the Sois were renamed with numbers, the new 'Ship's Wheel' sign and the old one were both there at the same time. Soi Yensabai also had another name that's almost obscene - just replace the 'n' with the letter 't'
Did you use a Dji Pocket ?
Well... that clears that up! 😏
Soi Boomerang - the building behind the camera where you were stood used to be Boomerang Guest House, owned by an Aussie I presume, one of the first businesses to open on the Soi, closed a couple of years ago and converted into a bar.
People refer to it as boomerang because of the shape, nobody I know says it's because of a landmark, that's from many youtube vids and people I know.
I knew some of the street names but some I didn't. Soi new plaza was soi 30baht.. brilliant
👌🙏👍
Soi New Plaza, formerly known as Soi 30 baht, is also known as Soi Keeniaow (cheap Charlie). Don't joke about this to the ex-pat patrons though lol. SangSom whiskey (rum) goes for 30-40 baht still around there I believe.
I too have heard Soi New Plaza referred to as Soi Cheap Charlie by a few Thai ladies, presumably for the pre Covid farangs sitting in the bars all day with a cheap large bottle of beer, mainly Chang, served at a cheap price
Just wondering where the No hands bar use to be
This is akin to the country living in the USA. Ya, just go down old hwy 95 then make a left at the Johnsons farm on the corner, go a few more miles til old Jimbob’s gas station and turn right then follow it around to where Millie has her sewing business”. Lol..... Love it!!!
Patrick, Ha! you forgot to turn where the old Piggly Wiggly used to be.
@@guzzijack9714 ... Ha! Touché my friend!!! Lol
Back in the day it had no street lights...hence darkside.
@@martynrollinson I was told that as well but who knows
Soi tengmoo was the first soi I set foot on, ever :-) what about soi lengkee (LK Metro)?
What about 'Made in Thailand' soi?
Heading north into Naklua, we have Naklua 27, aka Soi Loi Lang (100 houses).
We used to call soi 6, Sesame Street because that's where the muppets go 🤣
So it's any of your business where other people choose to go?
Wow you have some hang ups
Does Martin remember the disco duck had good night's in there they some good rock groups on
1:55 Now there's a man who's managed to retain his Scottish accent.
Bar on the walking street end of the soi called BJ's a American resident of Pattaya for many years well known bar in the day
Nice, they named a soi after Bill Johnson.
Where is ‘My Barber is a man in a dress’ Street?
SCOTTLAND ???✂️
Diana Dragon restaurant is still on Soi Diana, they rent out apartments as well as selling food (Diana Dragon Apartments)
I often lived in the apartments that have balconies facing soi Diana,
They do good food at the Dragon 👍
Lucas don't let Martin upgrade your sound or camera.. You'll be off the air for weeks..😳😳😳
พัทยาเป็นไงบ้างคะ เดี๋ยวนี้เงียบเหงามั้ย
You should have seen Soi Pothole before they resurfaced it a few years ago.
Nice video the adverts are annoying every time
Soi happy agogo was best agogo in pattaya best show very busy agogo in old days
Soi BJ....my kinda place I think.
