I don't buy a pc game until it's at least 6 months old because it will have hopefully been patched by then. "Buggy" games released on day 1 are now the norm.
Game companies are costing themselves money because games are usually sold for cheaper 6m+ later after release.

I was building a gaming fund this year, and by mid June I realised that there was so much crud released this year that I barely touched the gaming fund (I only “bought” three games this year aka amassed enough free Amazon gift cards so I mostly got them for free) so I used it elsewhere.

I just bought 2 games now because they are on an amazing sale and great deals and they are out for a while and patched properly. Also they are Complete Editions which means I don't need to wait for anything. Star Wars The Skywalker Saga. Love Star Wars and love LEGOs so plenty of fun awaits. Also grabbed AC Valhalla Complete Edition. I just love ACs and Ubi's open-world. Nothing more to say. Cost me probably 60 euros altogether. I shifted completely to a late buyer especially because I don't have much time to play so totally worth the wait patch and money wise.

Then you say thanks very much, and come out the other end with a repetitive boring drivel of a shit piece of entertainment full of fetch quests and really cool microtransactions (nothing with the word micro in it is ever good) wishing you could take back the whole horrible experience and forget it ever happened. And we get on average 3 of these aaa experience games per year, that's if we're lucky. Before X-ray vision was a thing in every game, (good) developers would take the time to fully develop and test direction-accurate stereo sound. So if you stood facing a closed door and heard loud footsteps coming from your 2 O'clock and getting louder, you could correctly predict that there is a guard in the next room walking towards the door from your right.
Most modern developers don't take the time to do that. In modern games that same guard could either be walking towards the door, or he could be three floors below you and walking in the other direction. You don't know where he is, because the audio design is complete shit. But you need to know, otherwise the game is unplayable. Easy solution? X-ray vision.

Wait till you get into the AAA game industry, you'll leave your idealism behind because you wouldn't be able to fight corporate decisions that are based on market data analysis, and if you're a programmer like me, you wouldn't be able to fight game designers who are making bad design decisions based on the same market data or political considerations, you wouldn't be able to change how the stake holders, who don't even like games to begin with, only review the game mostly from its visual fidelity and pushes a bunch things that don't really matter to a higher priority than it should be, you would be forced to release crappy unfinished game because you can't miss releasing it at that particular date for various reasons that you can't really argue (mostly about money). A big percentage of AAA developers that I know are idealist at heart, they know how to make the game they're working on better for gamers, but they just couldn't.

Cyberpunk hmm … I mean… Fall Guys was a funny game also. At least in 2020 we were getting 3 or 4 really really good games.. this year, Elden Ring and that’s it.
2018 was a lot better than 2017 also. (For AAA titles), now EA have nothing to do with FIFA anymore and hopefully the Saints Row title can lay down in peace. It’s a matter of time the Battlefield franchise is retired.

IMO, 3 and 4 were already a bad path for the series to take, after 2 was so good. This reboot was just the moldy cherry on top of a shit sundae, but what made it so much worse was the attitude of the devs, who took a decent series and ruined it, then told us to piss off for disliking it.

    Immortality
    Tunic
    Plague tale Requiem
    Nobody Saves The World
Pokemon Arceus (Stripped down Pokémon without the tedious BS...bit rough, but decent)

    Bayonetta 3
    God of War: Ragnarock
    Sifu
    Rollerdrome
Destiny 2: Witch Queen (Banger expansion...best since Forsaken...but not ideal jump-in for new players. An actual story...from Bungie!)

    Stray
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
    Dorfromantik

Get a high class escort to alleviate the disappointment. No quality gaming memories available, so may as well get something to think back on., top tip..for a REAL ign 10/10 experience, get 2 at the same time for the cost of the 5 good games you won't get this year. Best use of the ds5 controller by far... for budget gamers, old decrepit Meg is available on request for small quantities of scrap metal, discarded aluminium cans etc and empty toothpaste containers = 1 rim job. It's not half life 3 or prey 2, but it's something you will never forget (unfortunately). Happy 2023 fellow gaming companions.

Wow evil west was bad? I saw it as pretty average. Old game design was the biggest downside but besides that it was really enjoyable with the boss fights and gear upgrades and hidden chests per level. Hell I couldn’t even find another copy in a 50 mile radius because it was sold out in my area at local brick and mortar stores to gift a friend.

I don’t think we give the worst games of this year enough credit. To include more abysmal story lines, more boring fetch quests and to claim the game has more “Unique RPG elements and a vibrant open world” than the average game of this year, is incredible. I admire it.. surely they’re doing this on purpose… maybe this is just one huge joke..

Duckstation and PCSX2 are the GOATs, can't beat them. I started gaming on a desktop PC recently for the first time since the 90's and something I'm really liking there is that a lot of older games either just run well at higher resolutions "out of the box", have fan mods/patches to make them work, or in the best case scenarios; have full blown source code based ports that completely modernize them. I've been playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein via the ioRtCW source port at 1440p 144fps and it's fucking amazing. Open Morrowind is good as well.
I'm happy to buy AAA games when they're actually good, like everyone else I did get around to buying Elden Ring in September. Fantastic game. Bought Devil May Cry 5 on sale then too since I missed out on that in 2019, also excellent. But AAA is rarely ever that good now.

The acceptable level in the industry (including gamers too) has degraded very much.
