Sega Saturn on MiSTer FPGA is now on update all and while its still in beta there are still a ton of of best Sega Saturn games and Sega Saturn hidden gems to play! MiSTer FPGA Saturn core fun times! and the FPGA Core has been updated again! Bringing in some important fixes to some of the best Sega Saturn games! so let's do ANOTHER testing update video on the Sega Saturn FPGA core because why not! The ram controller has been rewritten and fixed up in dual updates! and we have another new core as of 5/16/2024
and as of last week we have a new core that fixes a lot of the MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core bugs on VDP1 and VDP2 for games like Sega Rally, Tomb Raider and Panzer Dragoon Zwei! MiSTer FPGA review time! Just remember these TEST cores are not the same core you get in Update_All today
and if you need a MiSTer FPGA guide I have them on the playlist :)
I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
SRG320 just updated the Sega Saturn core with new code...AGAIN......so of course we are going to test the new binary and see how it performs. and now it's been folded into MiSTer Main and Update_all! Seriously...the improvements in performance and compatibility is a small retro gaming miracle! A LOT of games we tested previously have HUGE improvements and some new games work that never used to! and some games that STOPPED working on previous cores are now back and better than ever! Plus Burning Rangers has a seriously awesome improvement!
and now we have new working games that never worked before as well! Amazing. This is a core testing video with user requests! So enjoy!
This core fixes a massive ton of issues from the last Saturn core. Also make sure you update MiSTer main as there are some CD loading fixes in there that benefit Saturn!
and now it seems like more people that have older RAM modules / the four chip ram module variants are seeing more success running the current Sega Saturn MiSTer FPGA core too!
and game saves are here! Which is HUGE for the core! Because playing Sega Saturn in FPGA on MiSTer FPGA without being able to save your game was NOT easy!
So that means its time to test a new batch of games...viewer requests too!
Note: this is the current build of the Sega Saturn core for MiSTer FPGA and NEW GAMES WORK! but really its the save functionality that is the huge thing! Also this is a MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn setup guide as the core is once again manually installed and you need to switch to MiSTer Unstable Main vs being on Stable main...which I will show you how to do in the video!
This is part of the MiSter FPGA Sega Saturn testing series...but now with a brand new core build! So lets put it through its paces! Because the audio quality on the new core just sounds PERFECT...in spots!
Note; you may need to format memory depending on the game. See here vampier.net/Sa...
and thanks to Andy D!

Even when it's Sunday, it's still Saturnday for the Saturn faithful!
Every day is Saturnday
You should really test out and demo incredible PWM branch of this core! It's revolutionary for analog v1 board output on this core/psx and n64
I will at some point in the future
Pandemonium is one of the first games I ever saw on PS1 as a kid and it blew my mind. Will probably replay on Saturn for the superior dpad.
Def worth a replay
I forgot that was on Saturn!
I haven't updated my MiSTer in a while yet, I've already forgotten the new stuff I was supposed to check out.
It’s so hard keeping up even for me
NGL I just clicked the video to hear you say FPGA Core. I love the way you say FPGA and Core. 😏
Haha glad you enjoy
The Japanese "version" of Pandemonium was insanely changed, and the Saturn version got the lion's share of the animation budget.
Also IIRC that's the studio that eventually gave us the Tomb Raider reboot of the last decade 'n a half.
I wish we could get a Pandemonium reboot
You literally made me fire up Burning Rangers! I was playing a week ago but now I'm ready for another go! The graphics and colors are so dope on this one!
It’s got such a good use of color that really sells the atmosphere
@@VideoGameEsoterica I would argue it aged very well
I’d love a remake all the same
We do like the insight about your personal situation! (Tho I doubt I have seen ads on TV here that you would have directed 😅 And I haven't watched TV in a loooooong time)
Haha well if you don’t watch tv then yeah….probably didn’t see them
I would like to say "Hi, Saturn!"
This is cool!
@@VideoGameEsoterica You know, because the firmware. 😁
It's so friendly!
I have so many things I want to play/read/watch.
Same. I’ll never get to them all
hope saturn light gun works one day!
I’m sure it will
So, you're saying this is a real Saturn. Got it.
👍
Isometric games are interesting. Project Overkill has a phenomenal engine. Jun Furano (Super Castlevania IV) worked on it.
They always have a unique look and feel to them
I've been studying 2d isometric techniques extensively and plan to bring some new tricks into an old style for new indie games, I do wonder if people will care for it.
I’d be down
The Cotton audio is on point, really sounding good, FPGA really does render amazing sound-quality when the core is refined enough, some ways to go until it reference quality, but at least Cotton sounds good.
The sound in core has improved a lot lately
@@VideoGameEsoterica The Saturn might just be the hardest system there is to get the sound quality right and on par with OG hardware, that SCSP ASIC is a special piece of hardware (Yamaha YMF292 & the DSP) along with the Motorola sound CPU and the DAC, there is a lot to get right, which is why software emulation for Saturn sounds like a turd to this day, only console that has better audio that will be even more difficult to simulate in FPGA is the Dreamcast, which is an upgraded SCSP plus full-fat XG MIDI and other some extra audio hardware special source, the Saturn & DC has incredible audio hardware, which was criminally underused on the DC (someone is porting Sonic Mania to the DC, canny wait to hear that soundtrack on the Yamaha YMF292).
Everything on Saturn is a bit difficult. Sega really just went wild with the hardware
@@VideoGameEsoterica They did lol, which is a big reason why an FPGA core is such a big deal, so many awesome games on Saturn too that I never knew about.
I don’t envy Srg320 trying to make Saturn work in FPGA
You should put some VGE easter eggs in the ads you direct 😂
Haha you never know. I do put Easter eggs in all my work
Why isn’t this finished yet, the Saturn is hella old, how hard can it be!!!!
Extremely hard
Pandemonium! is a real classic, IMO. I think the PS1 version is better, but the Saturn one is good. Was on PC, as well.
It’s def a classic more people need to play
Its crazy how the Saturn was never designed for 3D but studios wanted to move into 3D so bad so they made it work.
Where there’s a will there’s a way
Once the Saturn core is "completed", should I stick with one sdram module or get a second one?
One should be fine
I like Dark Savior. Are you also a fan of Landstalker? Also if you like Pandemonium then try the Japanese version Magical Hoppers and spot the changes.
Landstalker is a fun time for sure
Afterburner now has a long line where the hud should be..
Must be another regression
Is Linkle Liver Story, Princess Crown, and the rest of the Sega Saturn Library playable on the Sega Saturn FPGA core?
Last I checked those two are
“On the previous core, Burning Rangers had a ridiculous amount of polygon clipping issues. On the current version, Burning Rangers STILL has a ridiculous amount of polygon clipping issues, but now it’s the normal Burning Rangers-y amount.”
Haha gotta specify
I saw Silk in the thumbnail.
Haha nobody could miss it
@@VideoGameEsoterica Who couldn’t?
Exactly 🧐
@@VideoGameEsoterica She’s hot after all.
I wonder what would be an equivalent processor to what the de10 nano can do
Sorry not sure what you mean
@@VideoGameEsoterica Some of the game systems start to exceed the limit of what it can do so what exactly is that limit and in terms of raw power what would be an equivalent SOC or PC processor
Hey there, just a small question which isn't related to the video, but I just can't find reliable information: is it possible to create savegames/savestates on the mister fpga, especially on the snes core? greetings!
Only some cores allow for save states. Not many of them
Have you done any gaming related commercials?
No sadly. Number 1 thing you’d probably have seen are some pretty comedy KFC commercials
If we can get 100% of Sega Saturn games running I know we can get Conker's Bad Fur Day running if not Conker's Bad Fur Day and Jet Force Gemini. 🤞😫
Maybe one day. Working on it
Since we are talking about the mighty Sega Saturn, do you have anything to say about the Saroo cartridge that people have been talking about recently?
I have one in the way :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica me too, I’m actually really excited about it
Seems promising for sure
im gonna head off all the "Sega Saturn Hidden Gems" videos, and just say yes. almost the whole console counts as a hidden gem
So few people played it when it was on store shelves
Update_all or just for beta users?
Just manual install currently
Are these updates in the latest Update All? I am lazy. Sorry.
No. Manual install only still
@@VideoGameEsoterica OK thank you. Whenever it becomes Update All available, could you let us know, like make it very clear in the video? I'll be watching and waiting!
I always do :) it’ll be in the title
