This is actually a very good randori demo. Segal, though a bit of a sensationalist, does very well at multiple attackers and is an excellent teacher for this principle. Of course, this is a demonstration, so it's a bit more planned, but check out Segal's black belt test video. It gives a better idea of what randori is all about. Aikido is an excellent art for anyone wanting to know how to defend against multiple attackers. If the attackers are drunk or not, Aikido will be effective.
Okay, for everyone who says this is fake... remember this: Seagal is a master and the people he is sparring are also very experienced in aikido. He really is redirecting their force, and the reason that it looks fake is that they know it will really hurt, or even break something, if they don't roll with it.
It was a thing of beauty to watch him take the guys off balance in one fluid motion. He made it look so easy (I know it's anything BUT easy of course!). That is the result of years of trainning....
Wow. He makes it seem so easy... it just looks like he's knocking them over! I mean, I know there's more to it than what mets the eye, but that's pretty cool!
i like aikido. it's elegant and effortless. and i agree with those who say that the point is not kicking someone's ass but peace and the experience of harmony
I've been doing Aikido for just over 8 years now and I reached my black belt in December 2009 when I was 15. It is the best thing I have ever done and anyone who says that Aikido is a rubbish martial art should try fighting someone who's done it for so long! I'll agree that its not a good attacking style but if anyone starts on a good Aikido martial artist then they don't stand a chance.
I started Aikido but due to transportation issues, I had to stop. I live 30 min from the nearest Aikido dojo. I have to admit that I am not an expert on the subject of any martial art but my brother was going with me and he is not going to do anything that is fake. We never got the chance to test for our first belt but I want to go back so bad. I love it. I can't drive but I am trying to figure a way to get back into it.
Great video. I have heard that Steven segal studied the old style of Aikido (aiki-jujitzu) before it became the harmonious dance it now is. My school was the later and when we practiced with the school nearby that was more "old style", our students werent used to the hard throws and take downs and would often suffer some injuries. Anyhow, as for the video. Most aikido practitioners don't care for Steven Segal but I have to admit, the video is impressive. The thing about aikido is that wet
@wotsit555 I think what makes people doubt it is the rolling done during demonstrations. And people don't realise that if you don't roll, something's getting broken or dislocated.
it is a real shame to see so many, who has actually trained in aikido and other martial art disciplins, and yet lack the mental ability to see what aikido has offered the world, let alone the aikido society, O sensei left a legacy for the world to heal and unite,to harmonise with one another and the universe,if you are aikidoka, then it is time to respect and carry on the legacy of O' Sensei, aikido is not only about felling ones apponent, but rather rectifying ourselves
Yeah, I went to train with a buddy today and he taught a little Tai Chi to me, which is a lot like Aikido, zero muscle strength, pure technique and levers applied against my own attacks it all flows.... I ended up on the ground every single time lol. It's a beautiful art, I'm going to start learning it taking things from Aikido if I cant too.
I kinda like how seamless it looks, they aren't throwing roundhouse kicks and throwing lightning punches. It's just a slight adjustment of movement and a resulting one-shot.
Wow, thanks all three of you... that's interesting. What you're saying makes a lot of sense, astrochess. I'm not quite sure I grasp what you're saying about the rotation, but I believe you!
@ArK50 i don't practice Aikido but as a former Judoka and a current Sambo player, we have used many of the Aikido wrist locks, etc... and that stuff works for self-defense.
@ AciddReign When it looks like they are falling themselves, he is performing a joint lock, and the way they counter it is by flipping themselves to avoid injury
@BlackGhost574 Scripted isn't the word, however this is a demonstration of a training drill called "Randori." It's not meant to be a four on one sparring match. The opponents goal is to surround, restrain, and subdue Nage (the guy practicing Aikido in the drill.) It's an exercise meant to teach how to move so that multiple attackers can't surround you, by maneuvering them infront of each other.
@S714A The two things are totally different, in fact they can be both used more efficiently as complementary to other styles ... (ever thought about what fight really is?)
@mmaandrew13 The problem is: ppl think Aikido is only about circles round and round with your opponent. We train lots of atemi, timing concepts, distance and many others. if you take a look a the last fight "Silva Vs Okami" you'll notice Anderson staring at okami in "Kamae position". And the only kick pratcticed in Aikido, is the front kick. He did not told them how to kick, but timing and position to apply an invisible kick. Watch Machida training with Seagal and you'll see. Keep in peace...
@ChiningFox I think you mean Muai Thai @blackgatedef3 They are rolling because they are being thrown to the ground each time, and instead of just slamming to the ground they use that momentum to roll back to their feet.
Kalaripayattu is the original martial art of the world from the Vedic society in India dating back past 25,000BC. All martial arts like gung-fu, muay thai, taekwondo, karate etc. are derived from Kalaripayattu. In any case, my favorite "modern" martial art is Aikido. Highly refined and sophisticated Budo.
@123adenn oh and the students are flipping and rolling with the motions because if they didn't their arms and wrists would simply snap. Aikido is all about momentum, all he's doing is taking their forward intertia and twisting it in a different direction, if they were to try to move against that force something wouldn't be able to handle the pressure and would either hyper-extend or break.
i concur. aikido has a spirit to it. any practitioner who values it as such would not compete in an ufc style fight. but i'm sure some of the guys who have entered those kinds of things have had some experience with aikido, but as a whole, the hand to hand combat aspect of aikido is a small sliver of what aikido embodies. so there's ur answer. its kind of a catch 22, there's only the pursuit of being masterful in aikido with only competition being yourself kind of mentality etc...
@MissSweetHyuga yes,and if you dont know how to position your body for that fall, thats when bones get broken, hence aikido being so effective against thugs.
was it difficult when you first began? i'm going to start training for the first time in aikido... and i want to know how it will go! how is your experience so far and when first beginning?
Go to any local Aikido dojo and you'll see that it rarely looks like this. This is a demonstration for an audience, it's made to look more exciting. I'm a first dan in Shotokan. I done Aikido for about a year and some of those guys would destroy me in a fight. Aside from anything else, their wrists are like tree trunks...
Does anyone know why the people being thrown onto the mat keep slapping the ground with their hand? I'm assuming it's a way to balance themselves and catch themselves when they fall? Or is there more to it?
@acrimoneyius oh yeah nd did you see the silva vs sonnen fight? steven seagals training is really showcased there, i think its especially funny how confident seagal is when asked if silva will win the fight, he says it'll be easy lol
WorldCheese. He's a master. There's a difference between experience and mastery, a huge difference, and it's pretty common for people to overlook it or think they know everything. Mastery is something most of us will never attain, including you. Aikido is not about winning, it's about defense. A master of aikido, whether or not they are demonstrating, is untouchable.
Aikidoists are like any human group. Some fat, some skinny. Some pretentious, some humble. A few have found the path. Most either don't know what to look for or have gotten lost along the way.
@wotsit555 What most people tend to forget is that the reason it looks "fake" is because it looks like uke is falling from no real input from the aikidoka. This is because the only alternative uke has to falling is serious injury. I take falling over that any day. Uke falling is a way to prevent injuries while practicing.
@B3nBo1194 OK, so in a real fight if I use this technique your saying I'll break their arms then? Why instead of just fally they don't show what it can do (Obviously without breaking their arms)
@BlackGhost574 well in reality the flips are just to prevent their own wrist from being broken if you stood still and got your wrist locked like that it would take little extra pressure to break it
All martial arts are practical in someway and Aikido can be useful in certain situations. What gets me is the people that say, "it's the gentleman's art because you don't hurt your enemy." but then reply to haters, "they roll like that because if you don't you're arm will break." ..so basically, in a real situation you will break the enemy's arm.. real gentle.

I speak from experience, not just theory like some of these people on here. I respect all styles and their teachers.
@goliuo the opponenet doesn't throw himself, but he cooperates in practice. you throw them. with resistance the throws don't look as cool, but since the opponent doesn't know how to fall right, the throws can break bones.
@B3nBo1194 yeah i understand what you mean by using technique over power...i used to do Karate but only for a few months before i had to quit. But i fully agree that technique is everything in martial arts. I mean some people can watch these videos and say "he's not doing anything why are they falling down so easily"..it doesn't look like anything but when it happens to them they'll understand why they fall down so easily..i was interested in aikido cause i think this can help in situtations

@cockapoody4 there are a few judo throws ik that need wrist control im sure there are some of the similar if not the same in aikido. but it is ridiculously hard close to impossible to grab someones wrist while they are trying to punch you i could see some wrist locks working in the clinch and on the ground but thats about it
PLEASE READ MY COMMENT AND REPLY!!... so im moving to a new place and i found that i could take aikido 3 times a week and muay thai 2 times a week. If i can do both in the same week, should i? or are they both so different that i would get mixed up? MY REAL QUESTION IS are they complimentary? could i mix them both in self defense? or would they cancel each other out.
After re-reading some of your posts i can see that you are clearly messing with me. haha very funny =P It is hard to pick up when you see all of the serious posts made by aikido practitioners. Funny though, you had me going for like 20 posts.
@KellyTheAlien in fast demonstrations like this, all participants have a similar knowledge of the techniques. they are not necessarily all blackbelts, but they know at least how to move, how the defender will respond to an attack, else they would be in serious trouble. moving in the wrong direction would put you into a lot of pain, especially at high momentum. so theres more to it than "just" learning to fall.
@bergis81 probably because it's one of the most common things people do in a fight - get in close, grab and punch for the head, or push them other to the ground to lay into them.
Sweetsweatyface; While I am an Aikidoist, a few of my cousins, in addition to both my brothers, all practice and compete in MMA. Their coach was telling me one time that they do teach Aikido to their guys. I said something like "But Aikido techniques aren't offensive". He replied saying they can be, and if applied in a 'non aikido' way, are quite sneaky and effective. But most Aikido techniques break bones and joints, which you can't really do in the octogon.

Best comedy routine I've ever seen!
Me gusta mucho el aikido. Todo fluidez y armonia.
Un saludo desde España
love aikido.i'm training it i saw steven seagall aikido teacher when they came to presentation in slovenia.
Mr. Seagal You are the best! I'm very proud that You visited the Budojo in Warsaw! Arigatou Gozaimas!
I love his movies. Especially "under siege" they were epic.
Wow. He makes it seem so easy... it just looks like he's knocking them over! I mean, I know there's more to it than what mets the eye, but that's pretty cool!

I have been in the hands of an Aikido grandmaster and they can make you dance fly and crawl all day long as they see fit... this is not fake.
I started Aikido but due to transportation issues, I had to stop. I live 30 min from the nearest Aikido dojo. I have to admit that I am not an expert on the subject of any martial art but my brother was going with me and he is not going to do anything that is fake. aikido is a nice martial art, steven shows how to work with the energy, what is the basic, for understand this you must train
i nice to see your so determined to learn martial arts , good luck to you : )
Great video. I have heard that Steven segal studied the old style of Aikido (aiki-jujitzu) before it became the harmonious dance it now is. Nice video. And Steven Seagal is a genius.
@MartialArts247 Ever heard of Unit 731? Lots of respect there amirite?
I like how he takes on all four at once!
These Aikido demos are beyond comical!
it is a real shame to see so many, who has actually trained in aikido and other martial art disciplins, and yet lack the mental ability to see what aikido has offered the world, let alone the aikido society, O sensei left a legacy for the world to heal and unite,to harmonise with one another and the universe,if you are aikidoka, then it is time to respect and carry on the legacy of O' Sensei, aikido is not only about felling ones apponent, but rather rectifying ourselves

It's a beautiful art, I'm going to start learning it taking things from Aikido if I cant too.
hey, i'm trying to choose an art. Any suggestions for a robust body type that builds muscle easily?
I kinda like how seamless it looks, they aren't throwing roundhouse kicks and throwing lightning punches. It's just a slight adjustment of movement and a resulting one-shot.

@MMAandBJJ So tell me then, how do you defend against a knife using muay thai? Do you kick them? go into the clinch?
@ AciddReign When it looks like they are falling themselves, he is performing a joint lock, and the way they counter it is by flipping themselves to avoid injury
@BlackGhost574

karate, muy thai, akikido, chinse kenpo, and jeet kune do is all i need
Yes, they do have submissions. It will compliment your TKD very well. Much respect to you for trying different styles. That's a good idea believe me.
Can you imagine just reaching out to him for a hug?? Or even a hand shake?? Dam.
@S714A The two things are totally different, in fact they can be both used more efficiently as complementary to other styles ... (ever thought about what fight really is?)
:D you are actually teaching me much, whether you realize it or not.
He is really good at off balancing them.
@mmaandrew13 The problem is: ppl think Aikido is only about circles round and round with your opponent.

quite interesting to watch. keeping in mind that seagal's style is more oriented towards fighting...
Thank you, sir. I have faith in Omote Gyaku again. But if they did know you knew it, is it still possible to use it?
@theTicklemehellmo Well do you think he would punch and lock them seriously?
@ChiningFox I think you mean Muai Thai
@blackgatedef3 They are rolling because they are being thrown to the ground each time, and instead of just slamming to the ground they use that momentum to roll back to their feet.
i agree i love aikido i do many martial but aikido i the best for me

@Nostoch Nothing illegal about wrist bending. Wrist doesn't qualify as "small joint", only toes and fingers
@123adenn oh and the students are flipping and rolling with the motions because if they didn't their arms and wrists would simply snap. @MissSweetHyuga yes, there is, they are teaching them how to fall so they won't hurt and how to use opponent's strength for defense ( counter-attack)
Oh man the fitness center at my college has Aikido classes I'm really tempted to take them now O:
i concur. aikido has a spirit to it. any practitioner who values it as such would not compete in an ufc style fight. but i'm sure some of the guys who have entered those kinds of things have had some experience with aikido, but as a whole, the hand to hand combat aspect of aikido is a small sliver of what aikido embodies. so there's ur answer. its kind of a catch 22, there's only the pursuit of being masterful in aikido with only competition being yourself kind of mentality etc...

@cwkinser Lol so pretencious, what criteries you have to explain what you just said?
does the weight of them fighters make any major difference for Aikido artists?
Does anyone know why the people being thrown onto the mat keep slapping the ground with their hand? I'm assuming it's a way to balance themselves and catch themselves when they fall? Or is there more to it?
if i have done karate for 3 years will basic aikido teach me anything? i hope so cause im starting this saturday
@blacksashman Do YOU think that O'Shitta(=O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba)
was the Antichrist?
@acrimoneyius oh yeah nd did you see the silva vs sonnen fight? steven seagals training is really showcased there, i think its especially funny how confident seagal is when asked if silva will win the fight, he says it'll be easy lol
@jason3000ize No, it takes someone running around falling to the ground or flipping every time they get touched.

Holy crap. He was owning all four of them. xD
Aikidoists are like any human group. Some fat, some skinny. Some pretentious, some humble. A few have found the path. Most either don't know what to look for or have gotten lost along the way.
what is the difrene between black blue and red pants?
Do you know which 8 bones are they and where can I find a source which explains it? Thank you!
LOL 1:52 he even had time to brush back his hair LOLOLOL
@wotsit555 What most people tend to forget is that the reason it looks "fake" is because it looks like uke is falling from no real input from the aikidoka. This is because the only alternative uke has to falling is serious injury. I take falling over that any day. Uke falling is a way to prevent injuries while practicing.
awesome, its useful on hotheads, bullies and young brothers. LOL
How many times do you actually struggle with each other, like if 2 people are doing a match only 1 can attack and 1 can defend all the time?
How would you describe Aikido ?
@B3nBo1194 OK, so in a real fight if I use this technique your saying I'll break their arms then? Why instead of just fally they don't show what it can do (Obviously without breaking their arms)
@BlackGhost574
well in reality the flips are just to prevent their own wrist from being broken
if you stood still and got your wrist locked like that it would take little extra pressure to break it
All martial arts are practical in someway and Aikido can be useful in certain situations.
What gets me is the people that say, "it's the gentleman's art because you don't hurt your enemy."
but then reply to haters, "they roll like that because if you don't you're arm will break."
..so basically, in a real situation you will break the enemy's arm.. real gentle.
They stayed back from me then for fear of getting cut. Had I not had my blade and the stranger hadn't come to help, I'm sure I would have gotten seriously hurt or worse. @Drums107
He will stand a slim chance if normal rules of competitive combat applies however in case of a real life combat , survival or possibly in a fight to death situation he will have the upper hand . Of course this depends upon how proficient he is in the art .
you would knock out a beginner,, i would love to see u trying to do this with someone with experience like seagal... xD
wow Seagal is a master! i wanna learn Aikido
Seagal Sensei uses a very direct hard style of Aikido. Some throws start with a very disabling hold or aikido joint lock. In aikido you learn to take the falls gracefully as part of the training technique. In a real combat situation a "normal" person would either fight the hold or fall badly both resulting in injury. Moving backwards he never loses his posture forward, never giving up his power, proceeding to move to another uke/opponent. Watch it again=)
but then again when are the participants ever Aikido masters, or even martial artists for that part?
@mmaandrew13 nah once you get in a wrist lock your balance is off and it becomes really easy to throw someone down like that.
@desolatepurgatory where is that video???

It seems like Steven was showin off by the way he was just walking around and that sorta got the best of him when he walked off the mat
Seagal is amazing!
I'm going to take up Aikido. It's amazing.
After re-reading some of your posts i can see that you are clearly messing with me.

I'm not sure how serious to take this. The opponents aren't so much being thrown, as tumbling?
@bergis81 probably because it's one of the most common things people do in a fight - get in close, grab and punch for the head, or push them other to the ground to lay into them.
@acrimoneyius can u show me a video where aikido is used in a real self defense or sports situation? if you can i will eat my words
Sweetsweatyface;

agree the harder you try the more damage you take if you go hard on sifu the rebound can be very bad. same for tai chi push hands etc
