    • @worldofaquariums5534

      All good, I've made a beginners guide on all those parameters: ruclips.net/video/vWGSfKKCNsM/видео.html. But basically pH measures how acidic or alkaline your water is (different species prefer different ones). kH is the buffering of your water (Will Stabilize your pH at a certain point) and gH is the general hardness of your water (calcium and magneisum). Shrimps use these for there bodies and shells and during molts so its very important.

    • @eliegbert8121
      @eliegbert8121 4 года назад +6

      kH ist really necessary to know most of the time, and hardness is usually nothing to worry about unless ur tap water is weird

    love your vids and thnx for sharing your knowledge. i'm a beginner and trying to keep and breed cherries in a 3 gallon low-tech nano tank (marineland contour 3), with lots of plants and some drift wood and mineral rocks. it's taken me 2.5 months of learning, trial and error, and sadly killing a bunch of shrimps in the process. i finally have the water parameters within range, with ph @ 7.1, kh @ 4, and gh @ 7. however, the tds likes to stay around 250. i tried water changes and lowered it to 200; it eventually slowly creeps back up to 250. i don't know if tds will continue to rise; i guess time will tell. so my question is how accurately should i monitor the water parameters, esp. tds? i keep hearing to do less and keep it stable. at which point do i need to lower tds? and besides water changes, what else can i do to lower tds? 2nd question is my water temp fluctuates from 72 to 75 everyday, depending on day/night natural room temp. is that ok? last question, how many shrimp in a 3 gallon tank is too many for them to breed? many thnx. your fan, david

    • @worldofaquariums5534
      @worldofaquariums5534  3 года назад +2

      Tds isn't as important as keeping the parameters stable. The recommended is just between 150-250 but at same time if your shrimp are used to tds of lets say 400, they will breed just as well. I've heard and seen a lot of breeders (even shrimp competiton breeders) keep their high end shrimp in very high tds conditions, well beyond the recommended.
      3 gallon tank can have up to 100

    • @astro8boy
      @astro8boy 3 года назад +2

      @@worldofaquariums5534 appreciate the reply. yes i am trying to keep my water parameters stable; would you mind elaborating on what 'stable' mean? so far, my ph, kh, gh, and temperature are all pretty stable, fluctuating up and down just a tiny bit. however, my tds slowly rises each day. for example, from 200 last week to 255 today. at which point does my tds become unstable?
      i'm glad you brought up tds differences between breeders, i've been getting my cherries from 2 different local aquarium stores (in san francisco); one keeps their cherries around 220 tds, the other around 600).
      thnx!

    • @worldofaquariums5534
      @worldofaquariums5534  3 года назад +1

      @@astro8boy stable as im your not drastically changing the parameters constantly. For example doing a large water change with water very different parameters to your tank parameters would be not stable. If your keeping your parameters constant it is fine. I bought a 120 gallon for cheap but now I don't think I'll be able to bring it to my apartment for college next semester. If I have it heavily planted and cycled well and buy like 20 shrimp and then just have an auto feeder set up for shrimp food (on top of the algae and biofilm i accumulated), would they likely be fine if I only did maintenance every month or so? Or even longer? I'm thinking with 120 gallons it'd take a long time to get too polluted from just shrimp waste.
    How quickly do you think they may breed if they had that much space and available food? I'm thinking I could actually probably sell some of them because I know sometimes the population can just explode, in theory it seems like I could have like 800-1000 before too long based on videos of smaller tanks, but idk if it scales the same way

    What does it mean to cycle the tank? Sorry I know dumb question but I'm really new to this

    • @worldofaquariums5534
      @worldofaquariums5534  4 года назад +5

      So to cycle a fish tank, it means you have no ammonia or nitrites in your tank and a colony of nitrifying bacteria (beneficial bacteria) in your filter. These live in your biological media such as ceramic media or sponges and convert waste products (ammonia) produced by your fish/shrimp into less toxic ones (nitrites and then nitrates).

      Yes of course, start with 10. My general rule for maximum amounts of shrimp is 10 shrimp per litre (120 shrimp max for you) eg if you know are experienced. However this is a maximum, generally will get around 30-40 when breeding at that tank size

      Amanos are a safe bet. Or ghost shrimp. You can try to keep cherry shrimps but it it’s a toss up whether your betta will kill them all or not. Better not to risk such expensive shrimp. Amanos are big enough to be safe from getting eaten.

      But you have to put something in there to make biomatter. Food, biomatter from another tank. Something. Otherwise, youre just cycling water.

    Do you know how to get more bacteria growth during the cycling process? I had dumped in spirulina powder, almond leaves and some nitrifying bacteria about a week ago, but I hardly see any particle bacteria in my tank.

    • @cristianchan5402
      @cristianchan5402 4 года назад +1

      don't see your tank... see your bio filter... if the color change like a biofilm algae there... must be any bacteria there...
      but... do not think your tank is mature yet... the nitrification process is about 1 month... the bacteria will breed alot and your tank will mature...
      remember... fungus.. dust... bacteria... and any spore of algae can stay at bio filter too..
