the weirdest thing i saw was that people were complaining that yugioh series like cimo's progression series was causing buyouts of older cards. they are literally just playing the game. How does one even come to the conclusion that it's their fault for that?

    • @GeneralNickles
      @GeneralNickles 3 года назад

It's not specifically cimo's progression series that are causing buy outs of older cards, it's the concept as a whole.
A ton of people started doing sealed-only videos after gage did his, and a lot of people started doing progression videos after Alex did his.
These trends bring certain ideas into the minds of the general public. Ideas they may not have had otherwise.
Someone will see MBT pull a bunch of heros from various GX sets in his progression play offs, and they think "damn, heros are so cool. I wanna play old school heros again."
And they go online and buy all the heros they want.
Had they not seen a video of someone opening a bunch of heros, that thought wouldn't have happened.
And stuff like that happens all the time. A big name in the yugitube game brings a particular sunset of cards to forefront of people's minds, and that results in those cards being bought.
The content creators don't do it on purpose, and probably don't even realize it's happening, but it's definitely happening.
Hell, I've even done it myself. I saw a video somebody made about how they want ghost rares back and thought "ghost rares are so cool. I should pick some up before they get super pricey." And I went and bought a ghost leviathan dragon and a ghost heart earth dragon. They've since tripled in price.
It's not the yugitubers fault either. Most of these are purchases that would be made at some point regardless. The videos just inadvertently cause a bunch of those purchases to happen all at the same time.

When I started the game, I checked on some videos, I quickly got to TeamSamurai channel and saw some of his videos on archetypes comming from a "new set" and he was legit saying that one the deck was insane, competitive and some of the combos were broken. I spent my money, learned all I had to do to play it right and basicaly lost to True Draco, Dragon Link and Thunder Dragon on locals without any chance of winning.
So being new meant I couldn't really "be more cautious about it" since I could barely understand what was making a deck good at this point. When you start to play the game, you don't really expect poeples to be lying to sell sets and be in good terms with Konami. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that TeamSamurai is a good player that understand what's good and what's not, witch make him someone that just purposely lies to poeple. Unlike Cimo, who's way more honest about things and refuse to hype stuff that doesnt deserve any hype even if that means being in bad terms with Konami, the dude got my respect for that... (And btw... most of the poeples who trashtalk him about Adamancipator would have put Drytron tier 3 before we learnt about all those tech like Dawn knight, Eva and even more...)
So in the end of the day, the dude isn't in my mind, but when someone ask for some Yugitubers recommandation around me, if they're fairly new to the game or "not that good at judging what's good and what's bad" for themself, I just tell them to avoid TeamSamurai cause I don't want anyone to put money into things they'll regret... money doesnt grow on trees...

These types of players have one track minds: "if it helps me, it's good."

Thank you for this. I’d like to even expand on some things you said. Taking Sam as an example, he wasn’t my cup of tea for the reasons you mentioned, but, then my daughter got into the game (with help from you and your advise) and Sam became one of her favorites BECAUSE he was excited and memeing a lot. I then found myself watching Sam more with her and now I watch him as much as I watch you guys and the other YugiTubers I personally preferred. I even watch Sam without her now and comment and get engaged with his videos. It just took a different perspective for me to really appreciate his grind and his passion for the game. Sometimes, people just need a different perspective on things, too. He may not be your preference but he wouldn’t be acting insane if he didn’t have a true love and passion for this game and I have the utmost respect for him. Once Covid clears, I hope we can run into him at an event one day.
Same applies with Cimoooooooo. He was not my thing in the beginning. He reminded me of a guy I went to college with who I had a real distaste for, but then I realize the man wouldn’t be pouring himself into the game and making a life from it if he didn’t care deeply about it. Do I like all of his opinions? No way. But maybe he has some insight on things I don’t. His video about the penguins deck the other week ended up being completely legit. Every single yugituber tries to bring something to the table and those real folks just want everyone to love the game as much as they do. That old phrase “real recognizes real” gets a whole new meaning on RUclips and in this game.
Quick end cap: amazing point. Amazing conversation piece. We love and respect all our yugitubers in this house because none of you would be grinding like this if the game wasn’t your passion.
Please accept this novel of a comment for Pulitzer Prize consideration 😂

People put too much stock in what random people on the internet say... who knew?
This issue has been around since basically the dawn of public forums, and is prevalent in any kind of fan-driven media. Remember when people saw early reviews of No Man's Sky or, more recently, Cyberpunk, then flipped out because they weren't god-tier-perfect scores? Reviewers, developers, streamers, YOU NAME IT, consistently get harassed with death threats, doxing, and all sorts of over the top bullshit, and why? Because people don't like it when people on the internet say things they disagree with.
I don't know that I have anything meaningful to add to the conversation, just puttin' it out there that this is a pretty widespread issue with people in general. I genuinely do not understand what drives people to give SO MUCH of a shit about what other people think. People get harassed, stalked, threatened in their ACTUAL, real lives over opinions they gave on the internet. It's fucking nuts... but then again, I can't really figure out a LOT of why people say and do the things they do these days, so... guess humans just gonna be crazy idiots, yeah?

    2. I doubt the card price hype is just that, HYPE. After hype goes down it's just a matter of want or need. I think that maybe card prices are influenced through the mean of their sells.
    3. End of the day, I just enjoy yugitubing because it's a new way to meet fellow players and share ideas. Met a few I don't agree with, but I don't hate them. I do think though that when you start being more popular on RUclips or Twitch and getting more followers that there is a a sort of celebrity effect on those RUclipsrs, or in this case YugiTubers, that comes from a lot of sources, such as hate or admiration. I feel, especially these days, when there is this sort of following that everyone understands there are social implications, even though some of those implications are unwanted. I believe it just comes with the territory (even if its not healthy in some case) whether you are a celebrity or RUclipsr or Twitch Streamer. I can agree with this video for the most extent, but there is one thing that I will contest, while a Yugituber may not intentionally inflate the price of a card, there is a point that their platform and voice are heard much more in the YGO community. On top of that. Them exposing the cards and being hyped/hyping up the cards does have influence on the prices. I think Yugitubers do need to take responsibility that their voices and actions do have some effect either in the community or on the market, so I feel that also needs to be addressed.

While the Yugituber community is relatively small, I’m really thankful for the people in it to give us different takes on decks, archetypes, dueling, community, keeping Maxx C banned, and Top 10s.
Everyone has their own style, but I’m thankful for all of you.
EDIT: if someone says your deck or favorite card is ass, you have the option to play it or not. Remember: I still run Dustons in 2021, and idc how bad the deck is.

I'm new to Yu-Gi-Oh (I started playing with Duel Links when it launched because I don't have a lot of card shops near me) and I never realized how immature some people in the community are to take RUclipsrs' words as gospel. RUclips is definitely helpful for someone new to the game so they can discover what the meta is, how to build decks, etc. But at the end of the day everyone should play the cards they want, who cares!

That being said, I'm not the biggest fan of his content, so I only watch a few videos here and there because I do want to support him, but his style of video is a bit much for me. And that's fine, that seems to be who he is. I didn't really have a point to this, just wanted to input my two cents on Sam, since you talked about him.

There's a useful term that's used in conversations surrounding youtube personalities called the parasocial relationship. Both the audience and the content creator need to be aware of the one-sided relationship between them. An audience member needs to know the healthy ways to engage with big online personalities and not expect to make them part of their social reality. As well, the content creator needs to be aware of the expectations they set in their content and to make clear their own boundaries with regards to the relationship between themselves and their audience.

I think some of the pedestal issues are a misconception that people have inside knowledge. Clearly if a content maker gets some product early they must have inside knowledge. Which isn't true video game companies send out review copies to various sites and companies to help promote and same goes for stuff like card games. What better way to promote your game especially since the cards are no longer anime linked. If you send a few boxes out early to people then you can get people's attention.
I've seen similar issues with other stuff like some MMOs, where players straight up said "it must be true because x said so" because the concept of prediction escapes some.

Is it bad that I prefer this to the content to the OG channel? Don't get me wrong I like the fun stuff you post on there but I prefer more discussion based content. I prefer not needing to watch the video and sort of multi-task. I really love the discussions on here and hope it continues. This is not to be a criticism of the main channel but more just a preference as I sort of prefer more 'boring' content. Same with basketball, I will always listen to discussions over highlights or 2k videos.

To touch on this just a bit, some YugiTubers do speak about the Meta like it's a spoken truth, and so many flock to them for advice and thoughts. They speak confidently placing what they say into a realm of criticism if they are wrong, as they often wish to be right. Humility is often not an attribute of the normal YugiTuber (APS is an exception to this, Paul is VERY humble as is most of APS)
When you speak with confidence, it has an effect on others. In some of my psychology courses, we looked at Authority Figures, and what they often have in common are traits like, speaking with confidence, looking the part (an experimenter wore a lab coat, then didn't wear a lab coat, the experimenter was given more respect for looking the part than not.), as well as defending their points, people skills in how they approach others and talk to others, etc. Think in the realm of leadership as well.
Sorry for the rant, but that might explain why Cimo got roasted so hard on his prediction that went awry.

I feel like this issue of people being critical of people like Cimo is more a product of the community, who feel justified enough in their irritation at someone else’s opinion to type some excessively mean or backseat comment on RUclips or social media. I’m not saying this is exclusively a problem with the Yugioh community, as many other groups certainly exhibit this behavior, but it is striking to see so much of it on Yugioh videos.

If a yugituber (your example of TeamSamurai) says "This variant is the best variant" and it turns out that it isn't or the fact its one of the worst variants in reality. They are essentially lying to the viewers. Especially to new yugioh players who would take their word as fact when they don't know any better. To make matters worse, unfortunately Yugitubers do affect the secondary market and can cause people to waste actual money on a deck that isn't at its best. They'd feel betrayed when finding out the hard way.
As for my dislikes of yugitubers, I personally don't like TeamSamurai because he claims everything is broken and everything is Tier 0 or Tier 1 when I know in reality, that isn't the case. I don't like Mkhol40 because he looked down on other players during Nekroz Format saying the Djinn lock was "bad" and that people playing it are "stupid" (paraphrasing). Then acted as if Snatch Steal coming off the list wouldn't do anything outside mirror matches. I know these were his opinions, but how he behaved about it and how he addressed it acting like he was better than everyone else, was the driving point for me to unsub to him. Of course I left it at that.

My main problem with yugitubers is that they get a lot of products directly sent from konami to promote them in advance.
I have no problem with that per se but it happens way too often.
In the end they get all the "new shiny cards" that every single one wants to have essentially for free.
Yugioh is a very very expensive game and it seems like yugitubers always get a head start and ultimately may forget that the rest of us doesn't buy every single new release but would want to.
Every time a new special edition set comes out and i hear every yugituber begin their video with "yeah, konami just sent me these" i get a bit mad because i know i will never get these and they get it for free.
Don't get me wrong, i think most yugitubers are doing a great job and i enjoy most of the videos but i think ultimately yugitubers and the average player don't come from the same place to play the game.
I never see anyone on yt talking about the pricing of some products.

This game has so many man children it’s very sad. I feel like they don’t know understand how RUclips works and that people making videos aren’t gods and what they say is suppose to be what’s right, it’s just their opinion and they are human. I think my issue with Yugioh Youtubing isn't necessarily the RUclipsr themselves, it's the mob mentality, and for some reason viewers view them as some divine God and if someone says otherwise they're objectively wrong and stuff like that. I have been vocal about some popular yugioh RUclipsra that I don't watch, but I have my problems when I did watch them, and in my opinion some of the best Yugioh videos come from people who aren't Yugioh RUclipsrs, and I think there needs to be someone to make some change, and make some inventive content. Doesn't need to be artsy with editing, but come up with an original idea that a lot of people could be interested in

At the end of the day it's just a game, and there are some people out there that make it more than that. But I think you're touching on a deeper subject, which is that we (humanity) are lacking in respecting one another's free speech and not taking things personal to the point where you are treating others disrespectfully. The idea of saying you hate someone is pretty harsh, especially over an opinion they are entitled to, or slandering or bashing them instead of removing them from your life (like you said, you can block a channel you don't like for example). Yugitubers do put in a lot of work (I can attest to that), and everyone is different and unique, and that's okay. We all have to treat each other respectfully at the end of the day. It's okay to have a different opinion and disagree, even "argue" (respectfully), and still walk away with mutual respect for your fellow human being
