His face lit up when he was asked about Jesus. I think his answer was meant to be relatable to the average warped tour audience who may or may not be Christian. Plus it's hard to put how you feel about Jesus in a sound byte. Let's cut him some slack.
@Random dude Sorry random dude but the existence of Jesus as accepted as history whether his divinity is true or not. Personally, I believe saying the Bible is supposed to be more of a moral compass is a cop out for most people that say it than an honestly held opinion.
Yeah like he's (so far) not turned out to be extreme with his beliefs, and if you're a fan of this band you can't NOT know their religious base. I no longer believe but I still find a lot of strength and solace in the messages they sing.
It’s because of petty nonsense like that why I couldn’t deal with being raised in the church. His response was honest and down to earth, and wasn’t the usual canned lines like “the alpha and omega”, “the almighty”, “our redeemer”, etc.
The members of Relient K are passionate about music. They are also passionate about their Faith. They are from my home town and I graduated with them. They always have had wonderfully strong faith in Christ. But they are MUSICIANS not pastors. Where people are in their comfort in talking to THE MASSES about their faith is between them and GOD not YOU. Judge not lest ye be judged. Sound familiar? It's not up to YOU to say ANYTHING about their faith. They aren't professional speakers or pastors or teachers. It isn't up to YOU weather or not they are "worthy Christians" that is strictly up to God.
john 7:24 states judge rightously not by appearance-jesus judged many pharasees were hypocrites who would go to the deepest part of hell-people dont complain if people judge they are beautiful but judge someone one on one that they are waaahhhh judging me
@@thankyou2532 I know this is from 6 years ago, but that's a very... loose interpretation of that verse. Here's the full context, 23 For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath? 24 Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” Jesus wasn't approving of their judgment, rather saying they should look beneath the surface before judging. He was really saying, don't judge others based on surface appearance. Psalm 75:7 It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall. Matthew 7:1,2 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. "Pardon me while I throw up. I guess some people never grow up. What happened to the salvation you claimed? Rhett Gedies dude thank you songs like Who I am hates I've beenand be my escapeto be a reference to Christ and salvation as far as Christian songs go by Reliant K and in this interview they can I'm just kind a straight away I think and I really think Matt need to get back on the horse as far as Christianity goes and really devote himself really do a moral inventory about his music and what he's doing with his life
This guy handled the interview like a champ. Most interviews ask what the sound of the new album will be. But to do an interview involving religion depression ect and handle it well. Props to you man.
Matt is such a great songwriter and lyricist. Matt Hoopes seems super down to earth and loved his comments here. Listening to Two Lefts Don't Make a Right was one of the points that made me decide to make music. And all these years later still love their tunes.
i met them after their show on Warped tour and theyre the most inspiratoinal and nice people I've ever met. Been a fan since I was little, will be a fan until im old.
Very good interview. All that matters is that your content with your life and with what you have. Don't pay attention to materialistic things, focus on Jesus and you'll be much happier !!
Oh man,.... I remember the days of warped tour, went once in Indiana, I feel like Noblesville.... Good charlotta, reel big fish, new found glory, all the favs....even met wee-man! Great times..... Wow the stupid things I did.....🤔🤦🤷🏽♀️ To be young, dumb, and broke again....well still broke,...but ya know...❤️
I like this interview. They've really grown up a lot and are more mature with their music and are more open minded about things instead of trying to be preachy all the time.
Love the comments guys. We did not edit anything short. We are a Christian-based media group, so we ask all kinds of bands about Jesus. But we did not tell them that going into the interview. So Matt's "weak" answer (as many have described) could have been his attempt to not upset us, perhaps thinking we were anti-God or trying to start an argument. But that was our intent. WE give any band an equal opportunity to claim Christ. Watch our interview with Austin from Of Mice & Men!!!
He answered the question rather than using it as an opportunity to testify. *shrug* "What's your perception of Jesus?" - "everything" - coolest person to hang out with - gives great advice on how to live your life - a friend After reading the Gospels manymanymany times, I think that's a legitimate perception of Jesus as a person.
I never comment on videos, but I have to say, in Matt's defense, the question was "what is your perception of Jesus' and, not for nothing, the "awkwardness" in Matt's answer probably has a lot to do with the hypostatic union being a MYSTERY of faith. It's not something you can easily put into words and that's why Matt is so amazing for what he does. I am currently getting my Master's degree in Theology and this kid is right up there in my book with great Christian theologians for his charisms
I suffered from depression for a number of years, and while I do think that medication is helpful, it's by no means a final solution. I found that if you rely on medication to solve the problem, you will only subdue it, not get past it. In order to work through depression and other mental illnesses, there is a matter of will that one must have to work through it. That's why I'm finally able to be free of medication. And, yes, faith is a struggle, especially in our culture. I've kept my faith.
You know what I totally agree with you! While I love Relient K and their music, I do feel like they should all be much more open about their faith as hard as it is. Although it isn't my place to judge, the bible explains that those who are unashamed will be blessed.
God has been starting to convict me about how much I care about celebrities' spiritual lives versus my own or my friends or families. I think that we should care only to make sure their music is helping our own spiritual lives and to pray for both of them as brothers in Christ. We don't know Theissen or Hoopes's spiritual life based on this interview partially because it's just an interview(it could just be Hoopes is more articulate than Theissen) and partially because it's an old interview and their relationships with God could be better or worse than when this interview happened. With that being said, if it just so happens Theissen is struggling with his faith(it's quite a jump to say he's not a Christian,) I'm glad he has Hoopes. Based on this and other interviews(like the one where Theissen says Hoopes takes his kids to church every Sunday, not to be legalistic but it could be fruit of a deeper faith,) Hoopes seems to be really serious about his faith. In conclusion, we should care more about our own and our friends and families' faiths and those who are personally closely to Theissen are the ones who should care the most about his.
@Galitzen724 I completely agree. Relient K has always been one of my favorites and I've always been one to defend their faith, but this revealed a lot about how he is afraid to offend anyone. It's okay to pursue a more secular label to reach a broader audience but when you're asked a straight up question like that you can't shy away from that.
What Matt Hoopes said was good: "you have to make a decision: was it true or not? You can't just say he was a good dude." Matt Thiessen was kind of wishy washy in his answer, It seems like he's not so assured now. If this is true it's sad to listen to their early songs like 'What have you been doing lately', because future Matt T would be the one he was singing it to. I know it doesn't involve me directly, but as a fan you want to be able to look up to your favourite artists.
Yeah dude, I've been finding to my dissapointement that a lot of the singers I thought were Christians almost seem to have lost their faith. But I saw Relient K last year live and Matt T still seemed to be a Christian. I don't know, but I agree with what you're saying, I wonder if they ever play that song anymore...
But isn't that what most evangelical preachers do? Religion is all about money these days.. Therefore with music, if you like a song listen to it. Who cares of its origins if you enjoy it 😊
Wow, I use to disregard this band based solely on their genre, but now I see how stupid judging them, or anyone, for that matter, can be. His music and lyrics are real and honest, and that's something that I believe everyone should be able to appreciate. Not to mention that Matt seems to be a great guy and a good role-model for those who may find their self struggling with things like depression or self-conscious feelings: you choose to be happy.
Guys...I've followed the band for about 8 years and Matt T. has had some trouble with his depression resulting in sins. The guy had his music to help him. The lyrics say it all! Forget and not slow down was the album where he got over it and he is now on a ladder up from his sins. He hasn't changed.....
@PrettyTiaF That's a great insight. Most people become (or try to ) musicians to speak what they truly feel. And if it's hard to answer questions in an interview it must be easier to do so in song with a lot of thought put into lyrics. (like "Friday" XD)
@TeaPartier22 I totally agree-very nicely put, by the way. I was a little unsettled at Matt T's response as well. Do I hate him and Relient K now? Absolutely not. Am I disappointed? Yes.
I just want to point out that nearly ANYONE would be put-off by a direct question about what they think of Jesus unless they were expecting to be asked that question. I am confident that Theissen's love for Jesus is deeper than some neatly packaged words. That being said, I feel like if you are going to be a Christian who creates art that people consume you should convert your motivations into words long before you even think about being interviewed.
I agree. He also seems a little sociably awkward. He seemed nervous. I truly believe he is a devout Christian. It's just more comfortable for him to sing it. :)
I think Matt's faith was shaken from the depression and he's still not 100% about it right now but he still like believes in God and stuff but I think he still needs some time to think about it. Also I think that he is a shy kind of guy and he expresses his feelings better in song. Therefore, what you must take into consideration is his latest work, which is what he has been feeling recently. That will tell you what he thinks :)
It can be really hard to say everything that is really in your heart on camera when a question is thrown at you. He may not be as quick as Tebow with those answers, but I think he knows his Jesus
yeah I would agree total. I am not very well speaker at all and when I do references many don't understand it as well lol but yep God knows your heart and when you judge, he judges you. people need to remember what he said as not to be like the pharisees but like Him. teach and show others his great love and mercy and His wonderful gift that Christ has given us. :)
I didn't interpret it as Theissen not be a Christian anymore, but caught off guard and nervous by the question. Like others have said, Hoopes covered for him.
@dafterlife I THINK he was using the word if as an example ya know? it sounded like he struggled with words at the beginning, but i think he sort of straightened it out at the end
Guys, I think thats just the way he talks (to all the upset christians out there). I mean his first answer to the depression was "i dont know." He may not know how to express his thoughts all the way--may be a little tounge-tied. He might even be shy for all I know. But listen to what he has to say in his music. That just might glue everything together. I heard the wonderful Jon Foreman say "I'm a better singer than I am a talker." some ppl aren't very good talkers (like me) so cut him slack.
@TeaPartier22 Your view on Matt T. is completely spot on. I was extremely disappointed to hear his answer because it did not seem like the Matt T. that wrote all those beautiful songs! Rock On And God Bless!
Hi! I actually just got back from a mission trip in Illinois, and happened to see that I have top comment on here, which is crazy! Anyways, I see exactly what you're saying. I commented a while ago, and it seems like I'm stronger in my faith now. Point is, Jesus is real and alive, but I can see both sides of the coin. Have a good day.
Wow at everyone who is dissing Matt for his answer. Judging him for what he said in one interview? Saying you're ashamed of him? Throwing him under the bus for not giving the CORRECT Christian answer? Should he have spoken in tongues and prayed for the interviewer? O_o All the things he listed are true anyway: Jesus does give good advice to live life, He IS everything, He IS the coolest person to hang around with, and if we listened to Jesus we would find ourselves happier than we are.
I thought their descriptions were a little bit lacking too, at first. Then I thought about it and realized that their music speaks for itself. More than likely, as many have pointed out, they wanted to be able to reach out to all of their fans, not just the Christian ones, with what they said. Bring the listeners in first, then hit them with the Message in the music. And, if you have ever listened to the "Unknown" song in "Two Lefts," you know that Matt isn't the best conversationalist. Haha.
I love RK ever since the beginning. Look at the lyrics of their songs throughout the years, Matt obviously loves Jesus. He is human though, again listening to some of the music, I feel like he has had up and downs in his life. Who hasn't? Don't judge lest ye be judged. Only God can see his heart. To me this interview mad RK a little more human to me instead of just being music.
@TeaPartier22 dude, thats exactly how i feel, especially about their album "forget and not slow down". i hope its only a phase and the chrstian lyrics are coming back :( but now first there the karaoke album...
His face lit up when he was asked about Jesus. I think his answer was meant to be relatable to the average warped tour audience who may or may not be Christian. Plus it's hard to put how you feel about Jesus in a sound byte. Let's cut him some slack.

So because Matt T. is asked to explain a worldview in a few sentences and it catches him off guard, he's not a Christian? Come on people.
It’s because of petty nonsense like that why I couldn’t deal with being raised in the church. His response was honest and down to earth, and wasn’t the usual canned lines like “the alpha and omega”, “the almighty”, “our redeemer”, etc.

IIIII pretty much love those guys.
And I very much agree with you right there
What Matt Hoopes said was good: "you have to make a decision: was it true or not? You can't just say he was a good dude." Why does it matter though if you like the music and the message of the music?
Robert W Livings Because I don't want a messenger delivering me a message they don't believe. Not saying he doesn't, just wondering.
But isn't that what most evangelical preachers do? Religion is all about money these days..
Therefore with music, if you like a song listen to it. Who cares of its origins if you enjoy it 😊
Maybe he just got nervous and didn't realize the interview was a 'Christian' and tried to make it sound simple...?
thanks!! :)
They're such rad dudes!
Apparently Matt T. has trouble with words when it's not to music. Poor guy, under pressure. I LOVE YOU RELIENT K! ♥
I am entirely atheist but still love Relient K and their message!
i love him
love them
My inspiration. c:
Wow, I use to disregard this band based solely on their genre, but now I see how stupid judging them, or anyone, for that matter, can be. I agree, I was hoping for a more clear answer, but then again I don't know their hearts.
I hope, that will be some proshot video from Warped Tour with Relient K :D
@hermansung Curl Up and Die. one of my favorites :)
Relient K!!
Guys...I've followed the band for about 8 years and Matt T. has had some trouble with his depression resulting in sins. The guy had his music to help him. The lyrics say it all! Forget and not slow down was the album where he got over it and he is now on a ladder up from his sins. He hasn't changed.....
"natural things"...thiessen gets lit every day
hey can anyone tell me which song is playing in the video? i liked it and haven't heard it yet!
Miss this scene in music
what song plays at the beginning?
Is there any new songs
@PrettyTiaF That's a great insight. Most people become (or try to ) musicians to speak what they truly feel. And if it's hard to answer questions in an interview it must be easier to do so in song with a lot of thought put into lyrics. (like "Friday" XD)
"What happened to the salvation you claimed? It breaks my heart to see how much you've changed."
-What have you been doing lately?
Nathaniel Byers :(
what is the title of the background music?
He is my savior. And so thank you Lord.
And even in hard times rich or poor.
Please let God be the roller of your life.
what song is playing in the background of the interview?
whats the song playing at the start? thanks
Well I am done here.
Good day sir.
Song Name: "Curl Up And Die" Album: "The Bird And The Bee Sides" (2008)
What's the name of the song in the background?
@TeaPartier22 I totally agree-very nicely put, by the way. I was a little unsettled at Matt T's response as well. Do I hate him and Relient K now? Absolutely not. Am I disappointed? Yes.
What music plays in 0:16?? please!!!
I just want to point out that nearly ANYONE would be put-off by a direct question about what they think of Jesus unless they were expecting to be asked that question. I agree. He also seems a little sociably awkward. He seemed nervous. I truly believe he is a devout Christian. It's just more comfortable for him to sing it. :)
I'm proud of the guy who interviewed them, disappointed with relient k and matt theissen :(
...i'm gonna pray for them all.
Could someone please tell me what the background song is called?
"Curl Up and Die" from Relient K's 2008 album "The Bird and the Bee Sides."
Aww he said he can't complain ;)
I wish they had gone more in depth too, but I do like Hoopes' response :)
This is pretty rad.
What's the song?
i was only gonna watch this for a little bit, but i stuck with it because i couldn't stand to turn off the song in the background :3
"Before I even speak, you let me know I am understood"
It can be really hard to say everything that is really in your heart on camera when a question is thrown at you. He may not be as quick as Tebow with those answers, but I think he knows his Jesus

@jefro2020 Curl Up and Die is the song. It's sort of a depressing tone, but I really love it.
^ Exactly
And besides that, the huge smile on matts face when the dude said Jesus. : ) says a lot. I think so anyways.
what is the song in the background?
Thank you! I actually learned what it was a while after I posted that and bought the album/ep or whatever and found one of my new favorite songs!
can someone tell me if he is still a Christian? It's hard for me to tell after what he's just said!
@TeaPartier22 What's wrong with his answer?
Curl Up And Die it was on there Bird and the Bee Sides cd
@TeaPartier22 who said he was scared? its best not to assume too much.
@TeaPartier22 dude, thats exactly how i feel, especially about their album "forget and not slow down". i hope its only a phase and the chrstian lyrics are coming back :( but now first there the karaoke album...
