    Excellent lecture and very important. I feel all too often we forget the importance of the context and prudential decisions in which moral "rights" are actually situated.

    Why is this speaker committed to Richey? I still think you get a much better account from Aquinas. He does not talk about rights as absolute, but within the context of the common good.

    One could argue, contrary to enlightenment philosophers, that there is no state of nature that is apart from some kind of civil society. That is where the mischief was introduced. I don’t think Aquinas conceived of a state of nature that was apart from or free from, some kind of community structure, and thus a civil society.
