$2500 ROOT CANAL/CROWN vs $150 CAVITY FILLING MISTAKE!

  • Dr. O shares why detecting and treating a tooth cavity with a proper dental exam and diagnosis can save thousands of dollars and maintain your dental health. Tooth decay works through the dentin much faster than the enamel and can quickly reach the nerve with little to no pain. This cavity was very close to the nerve and almost resulted in a root canal. The root canal treatment would have required a lot more expense and a crown to help hold the tooth together after the crown.
    Fortunately with advanced x-ray technology, we were able to detect and fix this cavity before it caused this patient pain in the tooth and in the wallet. When filling the tooth, Dr. O explains how we utilize a special matix system to fix the tooth and return it to its natural looking state with a well contoured composite filling.
    Cosmetic dentistry helps address many of these issues such as dental fillings with an aesthetic and beautiful option that does not compromise strength and longevity. Don't make the mistake of avoiding the dentist because nothing hurts. Tooth decay/cavities can be extremely sneaky and cause lots of damage to your teeth without you ever being aware of them. It is our recommendation that you see your dentist at least once a year for a regular exam / check-up with proper x-rays to maintain your dental health and help you avoid expensive surprises that may damage your smile.

    Root canal treatement + ceramic zerconia thingy (non metalic) crown treatment all up, costs NZ$4,200 (incl. GST) for my back molar. Well worth the investment as I have several decades before I hit retirement and don't want the teeth shifting or bone loss. Lumino dentist is one of the largest dentists in Australia/New Zealand.

      Yes. That's what he's saying. Many dentists are too quick to refer out for RCT if they think the decay is remotely close to the pulp. If the decay reached the pulp chamber and made the pulp necrotic, root canal or extraction are the only options. But if it's just affected dentin near the roof of the pulp chamber, there are other choices.

I got my 2 upper canines drilled and filled back in summer 2015 due to minor cavities and they used a state of the art electric dentist drill which stripped away all my fear of getting my teeth drilled right when they turned it one.

    I thought I wouldn’t like you because of speaking while driving but I was wrong. 13 years in the dental industry and you are spot on especially with communicating how a cavity being formed doesn’t have to be physically seen or pain felt to be an actual cavity pressing near the root of the nerve. Would you rather invest $150-300 per tooth afflicted every 6-8 months or wait 2-5 years for a $3,000 investment bill. Take the $150-300 per tooth

    So I did end up getting front teeth crowns because my tooth structure was too weak. It’s been 6 years since they identified my cavities and the gum disease made that worse. They didn’t hurt unless pushed on or cold substances touched it, I didn’t have insurance when I tried to get it done 3 years ago, so I understand why I got crowns, but I’m making sure that I never need another one.

    I got sealants when I was 16 and have had beautiful, perfect teeth all my life despite being a smoker but last year I tell into a coma and was put on full life support for a month. When they intubated me they broke 2 of my lower left teeth. They were both split down the middle and literally half of each tooth was missing. So, after a year of suffering I went to the dentist and they did my x rays and exam etc. They said I needed over $8k in dental work...which included 2 (@$2500/each) root canals on these broken teeth. I can't comprehend why anyone would pay over $5k to "save" 2 broken teeth....that were causing constant, extremely debilitating pain, btw.So, I had them both pulled for a total of $425 (included exams & x rays etc.) Over the course of 2 separate visits. That's half of my entire monthly income at the moment!!!!
    While in the coma, I also lost both of my kidneys and am now on the transplant list but in the meanwhile, I'm on dialysis 3 times a week. I'm anemic and am taking vit. D supplementation due to severe bone loss. (The vit.D deficiency was diagnosed & treated by my nephrologist at my dialysis center), It's my understanding that my teeth will continue to go bad and there doesn't seem to be anything I can really do. Within a week of getting rid of the second tooth and finally being out of pain I was struck with another toothache!! Now on my lower right!!! I do seem to have a cavity that's appeared from where the bone has began to recede. I don't have dental insurance and am currently on disability and will continue to be on disability well into the foreseeable future. So, I'm helplessly watching my once, amazing smile, rapidly chip and crack and fall away. I need some help and good advice on what I can do, if anything, to try to preserve my teeth or should I just start making plans to get dentures? That seems to be my only option since I don't have the money or insurance coverage to do anything else. Help!! Please!!😁

      Do you have other amalgam fillings or crowns still in your mouth? Get them out. Mercury toxicity is very real for people with immune disorders. Not sure about those lucky few who have perfect genes. The immune system reacts and initiates an inflammatory process. This is what destroys the teeth (and sometimes the bone too). And I can tell you from experience, the inflammation is not limited to the tooth with the filling. Do you have any immune disorders? Hypothyroidism? Diabetes? Any past reactions that seemed like an immune response (i.e. hives, sweating after ingesting certain things). Notice any tenderness around your metal crowns when flossing?

So , what will next step be when that happens. Is it still going to be a root canal? Or tooth extraction. Since new filling is close to nerve.

I had no pain or problems when eating, but I wanted to get them filled so that I don't have problems in the future. Now 1 week later I've had pain everyday, I can't pinpoint which tooth it is, but at times its unbearable. I went back to the dentist 4 days after my filling and she said I might need a root canal. Should I get a second opinion? Is this a common problem after fillings? Why didn't she recomend a root canal in the beginning?

However, there appears to be insufficient interproximal contact between the two teeth. Instead there is a large gap. As such I'm having painful vertical food impaction into the gums between the two repaired teeth. Your video didn't mention the importance of having sufficient interproximal contact between the teeth. However, your repair, using the bands, seemed to close the space between the teeth very nicely. I'm wondering what my options are now. I'd assume I'd have to have the two teeth drilled out again and refilled to eliminate the space.

    • @shaskins15
      @shaskins15 6 лет назад +2

      Vanessa gallegos Yes!!! If your dentist suggests it, please take his advise. Front teeth have a tendency to break and chip far more frequently than molars due to the fact that biting area is a ridge and not like a table like molars. A root canal means the cavity is into the nerve, and you'll need a crown to provide stability and functionality to the tooth.

      Tell him to start the procedure & if it can be done without needing a root canal so be it...be adamant about not wanting a root canal. DO YOUR RESEARCH. just remember if it istoo close to the nerve be ready for a root canal. Recently I had a molar break when biting down on a nice ol cherry pit and the dentist said it requires a root canal and a crown. I said no way to the root canal and he said he would try but if it was to close then no luck.. and it was ALMOST to close to the nerve but he said he could do the crown without a root canal and he did! This one time tho when I was having a cavity filled the dentist said (a different one) that I needed a root canal.. and he did give me one. Anyways the tooth HURT LIKE A B after the numbing subsided for the rest of the day!! It brought me to my knees! :/ but then it stopped & was perfectly fine... until 4 weeks later it started to hurt again and you would never guess an abscess formed right above that same tooth!! I had to get the tooth pulled after that! WORST EXPERIENCE WITH A DENTIST EVER!! fortunately it was a baby tooth...

      Yes u could re- mineralized up to D1 lesion successfully with intensive fluoride therapy (for the initial treatment ) and diet control.
      This is called the medical model of caries control. Most dentist take the surgical model ( drill and fill ), or u can use the icon caries infiltration system which seals the enamel and prevent the progression of the carious lesion.

    • @igormorari380
      @igormorari380 5 лет назад +2

      If there's a cavity with bacteria inside, you can't clean there, so the cavity will advance and reach the pulp of the tooth. So you can only control with hygiene and fluoride when the desmineralization is in the surface of the enamel and there is no cavity, or only a small and open cavity that you can clean easily.

    Had a 10yrs old filling on my 2nd, redone because of added cavity and started to feel weirdly sharp sensitivity while biting anything, feeling redone, worked ok for a month and back to the biting sensitivity again, btw, the whole time i had cold (more) and hot sensitivity there although the feeling is bit away from the pulp; last checkup verdict? Root canal... Dry ice test won't calm down for about a minute and even after an hour, was having tingling sensation. I have another filling very close to the pulp but that's quite fine grinding wings!
    I guess my docs are good and suggesting what is really needed!

    I had partial RCT in my lower back molar (tooth 18 or 19) a decade ago & the crown came off now while I'm in USA, as the tooth developed some cavity. I definitely cannot crack a walnut but the tooth seems to be strong enough to eat vegetarian food & has no sensitivity or pain or crack. I'm not a grinder. Doc in USA told me to put back the Crown by laser gum contouring after cleaning the cavity. Will it be a good idea to just get the cavity removed and not get any crown? I'm hesitant to unnecessarily cut my gums, user laser, add pin to my tooth &/or subject myself to tooth sensitivity or tooth/gum/crown pain. Your thoughts please? Thanks!

    I had deep cavities on 2 teeth. My dentist said they needed root canals, I was so scared. Then the day came to have them done, he was able to save them with composite fillings! He said bacteria might get in and I would have to get root canals then.
    After my teeth were filled, they were very sensitive for a while(about a year). Now, they are not as sensitive, but I noticed one side is more sensitive than the other , after about 2 years. If I chew on chips or anything hard and crispy I feel a chill sensation on those teeth. I have mostly avoided chewing on hard and crispy food. Is this something to worry about? . I tried chewing gum on the tooth that is more sensitive and it has seemed to have made it less sensitive.

      Yes! you want to get that checked out ASAP. I’m currently having that same exact issue and was told I have to get a root canal and a crown due to the cavity/bacteria reaching the nerve. That’s why I was feeling that. A simple filling isn’t enough. Two different dentist told me the exact same thing, I didn’t believe the 1st dentist because my tooth looked perfect on the outside so it didn’t make sense to me but now this video definitely brought some things into light.

    Just wondering if a visible cavity not hole that is 1/3 the size of surface "size of a BB" of one side or outer smooth surface of a back molar, that has turned the majority above roots of tooth a little dark or blackish when seen on x-ray possibly need a crown? No pain or signs of infected roots on xray . This would be a back molar where a lot of chewing force happens. Tooth itself doesn't look black on outside but dentist recommends crown instead a filling. Endodontist says no root canal necessary fill it. Regular dentist wants to place crown in fear of too big a filling. Without removing cavity/decay and seeing for sure if the xrays are in fact showing more damage inside "dark areas" is it possible to know you need a crown for sure. I have had 3 root canals 3 crowns and the were obviously cracked or larger holes painful etc. So for a seemingly medium to large cavity is it dumb to lose some of the real tooth for the stability of a crown. Also maybe the risk of cracking the molar with a larger filling further damaging the tooth possible irreparably? What would you do for yourself in this situation thx.

      Sachi Fernando thanks man. Can’t afford it right now so thinking of doing extraction and then pay for implant as soon as I graduate and get a job. Appreciate the help 🙌🏼

    I was told today that I have a cavity on my top front tooth and would need a crown. Was told the cavity is growing horizontal and not vertical toward the root. Question filling or crown?

      What did you do then, filling or crown?

      We are in Springfield, MO. You can usually see on their website if they have a CEREC machine and cone beam x-ray technology for better 3D imaging.
