My husband got his first melanoma at age 23. He just turned 76... The important thing is to monitor your body all the time and get anything suspicious handled quickly. Hugs to you!
Does he avoid the sun or carry on as normal?
@@adammadtin8451 He avoids being outside in the sun during the middle of the day. So for example if he needs to mow the lawn, it happens early or late in the day. He also applies sunscreen 100% of the time on any exposed areas if he goes outside. You have to make it a part of your routine and it becomes a habit. You cannot always avoid being in the sun so always wear sunscreen and wear the protective blocking clothes.

@@Ishikaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Yes, his first melanoma was on the end and back of his ear. He had surgery and they removed a good portion but skin grafted a replacement piece. It looks pretty good. Not noticeable at all. He just had some removed from his arm. I suggest going to your dermatologist every 3 months and if you see something that just looks off, call in and tell them you have priority since you have already had melanoma.
MY father had stage four melanoma. This was seven years ago. He was told he had six months to live. ( Washington State) - Today my father is 91, works out daily, takes college classes, etc. The cancer was in his liver, lungs, spine. He was told there was a new drug that he could try - Immunotherapy. Long story short... it saved his life. He was a patient at the University of Washington Hospital . I just wanted to share. He is in remission. Check it out.. It is good to know about this medication. just FYI.

I had my melanoma diagnosis and surgery this year. Like you, on my back, stage one. I see my dermatologist every six months, and any suspicious spots get removed. Thank you for helping me feel less alone.

I’m so glad you do videos about your health and art. I remember being a little kid finding your videos, and you taught me a form of escapism. I have a large scar in the centre of my chest, and you taught me to embrace my body by painting it. I became a lot more comfortable with myself because of you 💜 you are one of my greatest role models

I appreciate that you labeled the video as melanoma and that people can see how serious it is to get it treated right away. The fact that your doctor hunted you down to come in that day and removed it the next day is a testament to its seriousness. I think some people are confusing it with basal cell, which needs to be addressed, but isn't particularly urgent or scary.
Thus far you have nearly 500k views. You 100% HAVE saved lives by your willingness to be vulnerable. Again, thank you for posting.

I’m so glad they caught it early and you’re recovering! Melanoma is so common where I live (70% of us Australians are expected to get it at least once in our lifetimes) that I forget how scary it can be outside of this country to get that diagnosis. We live under the hole in the ozone layer so skin cancers are super common here: so common that they’ve literally developed a commercial spray-on melanoma treatment that kills the cancerous cells topically.
Would like to add, my partner's grandmother has had one melanoma for pretty much every year she's been an adult. She's had over 60 melanomas now. It's so normalised here I forget it's a genuinely scary diagnosis outside of Australia.
Oh my gosh, I had no idea it was so common. Scary.
I'm from Germany but my great-grandma was just as pale as I am now and had skin cancer a few times in her later years. So I'm prepared for the same thing to happen to me too. I basically don't go into the sun unless I have to walk somewhere, I wear sunscreen and wear cover ups but yeah I'm pretty sure it will still happen.
For now I do self checks but I turn 30 next year and then yearly check ups are paid for me by my insurance so I will use that.
Some of my more tan family members act like they are invincible and bake in the sun like it's going out of style and tell me to do the same, yeah I'm pretty sure they will get skin issues too and they are not mentally prepared for it like I am so it will hit them way harder.
@@DieAlteistwiederda I will pray for their health! I love the sun, and am blessed to be an Asian woman from the tropics so my skin is more resilient to sun damage. I can’t imagine not being able to freely enjoy the sun and I understand why they are not ready to give it up. Hopefully they come around and at least use sunscreen.

Me neither. I did chemo, surgery, currently I'm doing radiotherapy and I still don't think it fully sink in that I had/have(?) cancer. But, the first time I felt like beat it was when I was able to go outside for the first time without my wig. I never felt more happy and free.
I had a scare last year which was thankfully found to be only a cyst, but the numbness mixed with terror when I found a golf ball sized lump was.. awful. I can only imagine the process of processing bad news of that sort and then everything that comes after.

So you made me cry. About a month ago I was diagnosed with cancer. Not the same, kind but terrifying. I have my surgery next week. Here's what made me cry. I'm 61, you're so much younger. I've had a great run. You're just beginning. I couldn't breathe till you said they got it all. It's your turn to have a great full life. I'll be ok.

I had cancer when I was 14 and have been in remission for 15 years. I'm now 29 and my cancer has returned. it was quite a slap in the face hahaha. I am going through chemo again and taking one day at a time. some days are harder than others, but watching your videos and other youtubers help lighten my day.

Getting told you have Cancer really makes you stop and look at your life and be thankful for all that you have. I was diagnosed last year with stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, I had to do 6 months of chemotherapy. I was told I was cancer free this year, 11 days before my 22nd birthday. So happy you caught it and got it removed so early!! Hope you stay healthy and you never have to deal with this again! ❤️

When I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. My immediate thought was “what did I do wrong?” “Am I a bad person who deserved this?” It was pretty tough. But I’ve still got 8 years left 💪
I have multiple health issues, some rare some not. I have gone through cancer scares and live with chronic pain as well as PTSD from childhood trauma. I have learned that as the bible says, "rain falls on the good and the evil just the same". The whole idea of karma is just how we try to make sense of things. In reality, the good and bad that happens has nothing to do with our character. We are not punished with bad health for being a bad person, it just doesn't work that way, if it did criminals would be dying from horrible diseases left and right. Bad things just happen. Good things just happen.

I just turned 40 this year and I've had 74 surgeries in my lifetime. Some have been minor like lithotripsy, treatment for bladder stones, etc. I've had some major surgeries like multiple reconstructive hip surgeries (one of which caused me to be in the hospital for 3 months with an open wound that was 22 cm long and 8 cm deep and I had to do wound care for 7 years), spinal surgeries (to include having surgery to fix a tethered spinal cord, twice), an Ilizarov external fixator (a limb lengthening procedure where they break the bones in your limb and stretch it to whatever length. Note: do not look this up on the internet if you are squeamish or don't like graphic medical pictures. The pictures they have up on the net of this procedure are pretty rough!) and multiple abdominal surgeries. During one of my longer spinal surgeries, when I was around 7, I "died" on the operating table. Luckily (and obviously), they were able to bring me back. I've had a few really close calls. I was born with 14 different birth defects, like spina bifida, having only one kidney, chiari 2 malformation, etc. The list could go on. I've also had personal tragedies like my mother dying from cancer (that started in her tear duct, of all places) when I was a senior in high school. My best friend of 23 years died in March of this year after only knowing that she had cancer for 10 days. In 2014 I was in a pretty bad car wreck. I broke 9 bones throughout my body. A guy fell asleep at the wheel, going around 60-65 mph (we were going about the same speed) and crossed over the center line only a car length and a half away from us, hitting me and my aunt head on.
Anyway, the point of all of that is, like @@YTistooannoyingsaid, (more eloquently than I ever could) stuff happens to everyone. It doesn't matter if they are good or bad. My family has no history of people with disabilities, physically or mentally. They only have average health problems when they get older like high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. But then there's me. My parents had genetic testing done when I was younger and apparently the cause for all of my issues is one of my chromosomes didn't form correctly. That's it. One tiny little thing caused all of my problems.
It's normal to question and wonder "why me?". I've wondered from time to time if maybe I did something in a past life and maybe I'm being made to learn something. But, ultimately, I'm actually grateful for being the way that I am. Firstly, I could have been so much worse off than I am. For all my health issues, I'm not in a wheelchair or anything. Back when paper medical charts were a thing, mine was 3 charts stuffed full of papers and rubber-banded together. Any time I had a new doctor, they'd come in the room and could never believe that I was the patient. They always said that I looked too healthy. Lol! I also think that being this way has taught me a lot, like how to be patient and not sweat the petty stuff. I can sympathize with most people.
I try to not get too religious/spiritual on here but I personally think that everything happens for a reason and you don't get dealt anymore than you can handle, no matter how heavy the load can feel. And sometimes I have to remind myself (especially during a bad pain day) that that life is changing. It's never static and whatever is happening, good or bad, will be over soon enough.
I'm not sure any of what I said matters or helps. I was mainly just letting you know that you are strong enough to handle anything that comes your way, even though it may not feel like it at the time.
Oh and sorry the post was so long! I'm long winded as is but it doesn't help when you've had a ton of health issues as well. 😄
When you hear the word cancer, it changes your life. My mother was diagnosed in February. She is going through chemo and radiation, and it' had honestly been the most difficult time.

Sending best wishes Lex. And your "cold responses" to the doctor is a very common trauma response. I do that myself a lot. And I'm sure that doctor is used to those kind of responses as well.
Never been to a dermatologist, but I'm honestly considering trying to get an appointment for like once a year just to check up and make sure I'm all good.
I'm so glad they caught it early and got it all. Can't imagine the whirlwind it must've been to hear you got cancer and then you're cancer free. It's good it went so well, but still, that's a lot.

I’ve heard that yearly routine skin checks are a important, especially depending on if you’re fair skinned or have red hair, or a family history of skin cancer
Good thing about skin cancer is it’s very treatable if you catch it early enough 👍

Bit of surgery info for anyone interested 😊
The 'tissues' they layed down around the surgery site is to help set up an area of sterilisation, they make a square over a patch of completely sterilised skin so they don't have to worry about contamination from accidentally touching a part of your skin or clothes that hadn't been cleaned
And the shape of the surgery site itself is simply because the 'eye' shape makes a much nicer (flat) suture line then a circle (a circle would have left two little peaks of skin sticking up at the ends of the suture line)
That makes total sense!
i've had two moles removed, one got stitches and the other didn't. both left me with raised, circular scars. not sure if that has anything to do with how they did the surgery
@@toxxicx it’s possible one of the biopsies was a punch biopsy where the dr will take a tool like a small cookie cutter and takes a deeper/thicker piece of skin which is why it was closed with stitches. The second one could have been a shave biopsy which was most likely just a biopsy where a dr will take a small razor blade and will just take a thin layer of the top of the skin. Usually depends of the lesion itself and what they rule out on how deep it will be at the time of the biopsy. You can always mention it to your dermatologist at your next visit just so they can evaluate it and make sure it is alright. Everyone’s body reacts differently which also means it’ll heal differently as well 🙂

As a stage III melanoma chick, thank you for sharing your story. The hardest year in my life was making it through my treatments for melanoma. I'm coming up on 8 years from my diagnosis. Had a gotten yearly skins checks, this spot would have been removed well before it got weird. My primary care (at the time, I got a new one after this) brushed off any concerns I had about my spot.
Please please get your skin checked. It can literally save your life.
I just got diagnosed with melanoma and my gp STILL HASNT CALLED ME! Luckily I have a friend who works in the office and told me to check my electronic chart. Still haven’t gotten a referral. It’s been a week. I’m calling the doctor every day. It’s ridiculous and our health system is broken 😞

You feeling nothing at the doctor's office is a natural response for your body. You are correct when you say that you might have been in shock, you most likely were. Cancer is a scary thing and I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I hope you do get better ♥
Is skin cancer the least harmful cancer?
@@rocky-jy5nx it depends on the type and how early it is caught. Melanoma is a very serious cancer if not caught soon enough. Other skin cancer BCC and SCC do not typically spread to other areas. All cancer should be treated seriously. Take care of your skin peeps and get checked as soon as you spot something you're concerned about.
For the love of God and all that is holy, Lex, please take breaks when you need to. Taking time to process any kind of trauma is the hardest yet most important part of healing. We will all still be here to watch your videos and support you when you feel you are ready to get back into it. ❤

i’m a 21 year old t1 diabetic w/ a rare chronic disorder called Erythromalegia, both happened within a year of each other, I was 11 when it happened. didn’t know what my chronic disorder was until I was 18, so the time in between of not knowing made me feel like i had some wrong w me or i was over reacting. it sucks, but we’re strong and I’m proud of y’all 🖤

I know exactly everything you experienced and explained. I was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer on my forearm at the age of 19 and had a similar experience with the removal process and recovery after. I'm so glad you caught it early and were able to have it taken care of so quickly! 💗💗
This is very weird timing - I was diagnosed with a stage 1 melanoma a couple of days ago. Most bizarre phone call I have ever had, I said a lot of numb one word answers. I go back in to get more skin removed tomorrow, as there was not enough clearance around it. I only went and got it checked because it was really itchy. It was on my back, I live alone and hadn't had a skin check for at least 10 years before. If it hadn't been itchy it could have been such a different story! Also, I don't go in the sun pretty much at all, but had a few bad sunburns when I was a child.

all it takes is one bad sunburn. it increases the chance by almost 50%. just recently got really bad sun poisoning n now this is a big concern for me

Annual checks are so important - my surgeon was shocked my derm caught my basal cell because it was small to the eye. I am so glad you are doing well.
BCC has a 100% 5 year survival rate. It can still be problematic and must have killed some people but if you had a choice of cancers that’s the one you’d choose.
I'm glad this was caught in time! You were my inspiration to start my own channel (unfortunately I had to stop due to school and a lot of strong life events) but you were the person you kept me inspired. I hope you can make a full recovery and live peacefully.
Your diagnosis reminds me so much of my cancer diagnosis, the going emotionally numb and potentially creeping out the doctor is so true! Girl, I understand your “I felt the trees. I felt the lights.” I went through that stage, too, after my cervical cancer diagnosis.
I get it. Totally & utterly.
I had an added complications to that emotion due to having kids. Teenagers. Before my surgery, I wondered how my kids would survive if I died.
Then I got through it and had the “I felt the trees.” moment. I cried for days. But cried that time because I was happy and thankful.
I get it.
I went through the same thing, once I knew my cancer was gone. It was like being given an ultra HD version of life for a while when I had been using a 16 bit version. Every breeze, every sunbeam, every drop of water in the shower felt like a blessing.

@@lemons_66 I've lost loved ones to cancer, too. Cancer susceptibility runs in my family. Two of my aunts had cancer multiple times and breast cancer claimed one of them. It's scary to know that it could come back somewhere else, but I'm grateful for the time I gained. I'd have been dead before 30 if I hadn't gotten my symptoms checked out.

I'd been putting off finding a new dermatologist after my last one moved away 6 months ago. Searching for one now. Thank you for the wakeup call, and I am so glad that everything has turned out okay. 🖤
How do you even just casually find a dermatologist? Where I'm from, you have a gp, but then unless the doctor sees something they think is concerning, you don't have any other doctors. I've never been to a dermatologist in my life, even when I had horrible acne. We tried to get a referral once but the gp said it was normal at my age and wouldn't give one. My uncle had cystic acne and so we were really worried when I had croppings that looked like his... anyway... it'd be nice to go, I've got some moles that have worried me for a few years.
@@sequincook6046 in my city, healthcare is through medical centers/clinics. So family medicine and specialists are under the same medical center umbrella. Yes, some specialists here do require referrals, but I've found dermatologists are not one of them. I am fortunate that I can search for one at the medical center that I go to. I know not everyone is as lucky.
@@NyxNamor That does sound nice. In my town, we do have a hospital, but no one goes there for regular doctors visits. We have a clinic with general practitioners, and if they want to send you to a specialized doctor, they send you to one of the larger hospitals that are two hours away. I've been to an endo once, but that was the only time I've been referred out. When I lived in a larger city, I did have an ortho doctor for a car accident that was in the same network as my gp up there, but I ended up moving back home when my living situation changed. I did love that hospital though... they were so nice. Really listened.

My husband gets melanomas removed because of his albinism and it does worry me. We’re all praying for you!! I’m also a redhead with light skin. I’ve had surgeries (I have Spina Bifida) since I was basically born and am so used to being in the hospital but i also have medical ptsd (undiagnosed) from all of this since being a young child. Now that I’m an adult, it’s a little better.
Hey, I’ve got spina bifida as well, and my first operation was with six months! Going to the doctor is still tough for me, but ironically enough, I work in a hospital myself now, and it’s nice to help others through those scary times!
I haven't really seen many other people with spina bifida. I was diagnosed with occulta (the least serious one) and also had severe scoliosis and ended up getting my whole spine fused when I was 18 and then had that taken out and different material put in only my lower back a couple years later. I've always had lots of medical issues/pains since I was little, but I get bad anxiety whenever I have to go to the doctor, which is every month, still.
Also spina bifida (myelomeningecele). First operated on within 48 hours of life (Hydrocephalus) which if i remember has a 90 percent cohabitation with spina bifida.

That’s because with cancer they take way more than they can see. All it takes is one cancerous cell to multiply and metastasize. That’s why it’s a good thing they made a larger incision than the mole size
The talk about “feeling alive” realllyyyy hit home as a chronically ill person. I have a fun and rare heart condition that we’ve recently learned is probably the cause of a majority of my problems, and every now and again it’ll just hit, and it’s so strange to try to describe.

4:00 - to your comment about "feeling nothing", I can sort of relate! I was in a pretty bad car accident and had 0 relatable emotions until I actually got to the hospital and saw my brother (he was my emergency contact). I had been running on adrenaline since the moment of impact and my brain didn't allow me to feel any emotions or hold onto any fear. It also took me at least 6 months after the accident to even remember what the accident *felt* like because it was so deeply burrowed away in my brain to keep me safe.

I was in a very very minor accident on a golf cart (as far as accidents go, still had some nasty bruising, and definitely busted the wheel on the cart pretty badly...)
But right after it happened, I just got right up feeling fine and said "Well that sucked!" rather jokingly... I put the windshield back on the cart, tried to keep driving to work... realized the wheel was totally screwed, and was going to WALK HOME to get a ride to work... a couple that had witnessed the accident had refused to leave (i think they knew more than I did...) and they insisted on giving me a lift back to the house...
By the time we were pulling in the driveway... I was feeling it. I was starting to hurt. I was very glad they'd given me a ride... by the time I got inside and was trying to explain what had happened to my roomate, I was starting to sob and hyperventilate and couldn't even speak to call my workplace to let them know. She had to do it for me.
And that was just a minor accident that resulted in a couple weeks of feeling sore (steering wheel had jammed itself like.. behind my hip, when I went forward and hit it, and I'd hit my shin on *something* and bruised it pretty badly too). I can't imagine what recovering from a more serious accident would be like!
going off the few traumatic experiences I've had, I think my brain is pretty prone to PTSD... I'm extremely wary at that intersection where my small accident happened! And I still glare at the tree I hit.

About that part where you're talking about looking at the trees and going "wow", the way I see it is that it was basically your brain registering the fact that "it could have been/gotten worse, I could've lost all this". The realisation that everything is temporary, that one day you are, next day you're not. I've never been through anything like this, it's just my opinion based on everything you said. My mother, after years of basal cell and AKs, noticed a growing spot on her face. It wasn't dark, but it had the irregular border and was growing fast. When she initially asked for it to be biopsied, her dermatologist told her it was an age spot and that it couldn't be removed without her being charged. This continued for a long time with my mother consistently pushing to have it tested at both her appointments and mine before going to a different doctor who immediately biopsied it with a cheerful "it's probably nothing". Luckily it was stage 0, and when she got the call, it was the same "yes", "okay", "absolutely" intense calm. It's healed so well too, and you can't even see it now.
Everyone needs to see a dermatologist regularly. None of us are exempt from skin cancer, and if you feel like a doctor isn't taking you seriously, a second opinion is the best thing possible.
I'm so glad that you caught it early and were able to get it removed. Cancer is so scary, and even having it removed, the surgery scars are such an intense thing to cope with mentally afterwards. I hope your healing is going well.
Cancer survivor here: 13 years. Mine was similar to yours. Stage 1, removed my Uterus. Cancer free! I really respect you!! It is not cheesy - it does make you feel alive!!

I'm super terrified of surgeries, especially ones where I would have to be awake, and I do plan on eventually getting a surgery to fix a problem I am currently having, so hearing you talking about your experience was at least a little comforting. I'm so glad everything was caught and resolved so quickly.

I have lost family members to melanoma and some at a young age and I’ve always been scared to check my moles out because of that. Your story reminded me of the importance of getting them checked out. I’ll be booking an appointment on Monday to get all my moles removed as a precautionary measure (we are able to do that in Canada). Thank you for sharing your story.
Same here. My dad died 3 years ago from melanoma. I feel like people just don’t take skin cancer as seriously as they should. Before my dad passed away I’d tell people the kind of cancer he had and they’d act like “oh that’s nothing “ and sadly it took his life. I need to get checked too.
Not gonna lie, every time you almost started crying I did as well. When you told the sub club about you having cancer my heart absolutely dropped. I lost my step dad a few years back to cancer and it was the most awful thing to watch. I am so grateful that this was caught and fixed so early on. We love you Lex

Me and my boyfriend are going through this currently. He's had a spot on his neck for YEARS that I finally nagged him into getting it looked at because my aunt died from melanoma. They told him at his initial appointment that it was probably melanoma. So we waited a long 5 days for the biopsy to come back so we could find out how far along it is. Luckily, it's stage 2 and will be able to be removed in surgery, but he has to be put under due to the size and location. It's been a super scary experience.
Wait YEARS?! You can have this for YEARS with out symptoms? .......I hope so much he will be ok *hug
@@andreamarie9526 really, most cancers don’t show symptoms. Like breast cancer, colon cancer, and skin cancers don’t show symptoms until they’re in the late stages :/ By the time a family friend of mine showed symptoms, it was too late and he died within 9 months.

@@KnaughtyKnancy Most skin cancers don't show symptoms and when they do start showing symptoms such as itching, bleeding, burning or whatever, they have been there a while. But Melanoma progresses so quickly that his cancer could not have been there for years, but just recently changed from being a mole to a cancerous mole. If he had not listened, it could have been just a month or two before he would have needed much more serious treatment, not just removal!

I'm so glad you were able to catch it early! I had a scare from a spot on my lower back and another under my chin, near my neck. Luckily it turned out to be nothing, but between the biopsy and the results, it felt like a lifetime. You really do get a reality check and appreciate this life and what we really DO have. I tell my son that scars tell a story... yours gets to be that you faced something potentially fatal and you beat it... you gave cancer the mental middle finger and didn't let that monster take over. Things only look up from here! ♡♡♡

My mother had an experience like this all the way back in 2013, where she had a mole on her back that her doctor had checked before, but it had since had changed color. Instead of contacting her doctor, she went straight to the dermatologist for an appointment. The first thing the dermatologist said when he came into the room when he saw my mother was, “That’s coming off.” A biopsy revealed that the spot was melanoma, and she had it surgically removed. As with your case, it wasn’t a problem because they had caught it in time due to early detection, which is important.
I understand the feeling of being bullied by what if's. I'm a quiet watcher of the channel and have been for I don't know how long. I just want to say how glad I am that your cancer was caught so early and that it was all removed successfully

My sister had a large mole on her back that turned into melanoma when she turned 30. She had the surgery, and luckily it was caught in time. She is cancer free now ten years later and a mother to two stinkin' cute kids.

Same... I have a lot of moles and freckles on my body, primarily on my arms.... I have one mole on my stomach, that I've had since I was so little. I don't remember not having it. And I have another, on the back of my head, that one I've had since I was a teenager. I feel fine though. Never had my skin checked. Because all my moles... look fine. They look like hers, you know? Not all of my moles are the same colors, they're various colors of brown and tan, but this... is making me so scared.

This is why I also do yearly checks when I see my dermatologist for acne, as many people in my family have had melanoma and caught it early I dont plan on taking chances. Routine checks are essential guys, or instead of a mostly invisible scar you could die from aggressive skin cancer.

I can't fully understand a skin cancer diagnosis but on March 23rd this year I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Like 2.5 weeks before my 22nd birthday. I was incredibly lucky with the diagnosis I received as it could have been a much worse form. I'm just about to finish my sixth, and final, round of chemotherapy. I completely understand the feeling nothing and then feeling being alive. I feel like having cancer really gives you a whole new look on things and you become a little more grateful for the little things. I've definitely been soaking up all the love from my toddler 100x more because for a while I was so scared I wouldn't be around to watch her grow up. I'm so glad you had a similar experience as in getting the best possible diagnosis in the given situation. I'm glad you are doing well. I absolutely love all of you're content and absolutely take breaks, it's best for you all around to take breaks when you need them. You are so loved by this community I'm sure everyone will understand when you need to take some time or yourself.

I'm so glad you caught this early. I got a terrible sunburn on my neck and shoulders, maybe the third sunburn I'd ever had in my life, but definitely the worst and was diagnosed with melanoma shortly after it had healed. At 12 years old. I definitely appreciate your message to everyone - let me also be a lesson to always wear sunscreen and get checked regularly.

Im a nurse and I've recently started working in a theatre that does operations like yours. I found your video really fascinating. I see my patients for an hour maybe to get their lesion removed I don't see the thoughts and worries before and after it so it's really helped me empathise with my patients even more.
