I’m not normally into Christmas. But, Maker Secret Santa is the one thing I look forward to every year. Excited to see what all of the brilliant makers get into this year.
Practical people and stupid nails don't mix... which is I suppose the point of them, they're supposed to show that their wearer doesn't have to work. Me old mam used to say they were a sign of the dreaded "high maintenance woman". Gave my niece a lift to a Christmas party last week... She'd had her nails done for some reason but after a minute faffing with the seat-belt and another with the catch of her bag to get her phone out she asked if I had a nail file in the car and spent the rest of the trip rasping away with the file on my glovebox Gerber.
I gotta hand it to you, both the acting and editing in the style of This Old Tony at the start was, hands down, one of the best executed imitations I’ve ever seen! 👏
Funny thing, a few years ago I watched TOT make a knife for Xyla and started watching this site. Minute ago I finished watching TOT make a gift for someone else and get sent back here to see what she made for him. Love both sites, channels, whatever the cool kids call it and it has been many years since I was a cool kid. Merry Christmas
This isn't my favorite time of year but am I so dang thankful for the youtube makers channels. You bring a sense of joy to me that I just can't find anywhere else.
Many years ago I worked in the sculpture dept. of an art school. You can cast a hand, face, or other body part without silicone or gel--just grease the skin with vaseline and do a two part plaster mold directly against the skin. It works very well and is incredibly detailed; every hair and pore is captured. When you do it this way, it's best to wait to remove it until the plaster starts to get hot so you know it will be strong enough not to break or spall when removing it. His hand was cast it two parts, sort of like the mother mold in your video. When the second half was done and it started to heat up, the subject said, ok, pop it off, and that's when they discovered there was no mold release between the plaster halves. As it heated up more and more, the guy started to panic, running around the room yelling, smashing his plaster covered hand on anything solid, trying to get it off. The plaster only gets warm on the outside, because the evaporating moisture cools it, but inside it really does get hot! Finally, a couple of us had to hold him still while the embarrassed mold maker broke it off with a hammer. No serious harm was done, but his hand was bright red. It was hilarious to all concerned in retrospect, but in another minute or two he would have been seriously burned.
For foundry options, you may also consider reaching out to Universities with a Metallurgical Engineering program and an on campus foundry. You may have better luck than a commercial foundry.
Another option would be universities with a sculpture specialization in their art department. When I did sculpture, we absolutely would have loved to do a video of a pour for an educational video. And it was exactly the sort of challenge that would be simple fun.
makers secret santa is my favorite series every year. i nearly cried the year tony made you the knife and your reaction to it. im happy to see tony finally get a really nice and thought out gift. you and tony consistently make the best gifts IMHO.
Yeah, the brass would be funnier, but the rubber handmer seems like it would actually be useful. After all, if you're using a rubber mallet, you don't usually need a perfectly parallel surface.
I actually thought the same thing but I have a dirty mind so I thought that looked like a terrible idea of her making a fist of her own on a stick to give to a dude from a pretty girl. Cracks my ass up. Pun intended.
My favorit holiday tradition! Gotta hand it to you, the is definitely the handyest set of had tools the world has ever seen. High five! The Handmer is definitly my favorite, though the hand clamp made me chuckle and the hand tightener is brilliantly executed. Thanks for sharing! I started with ToT this year, so you're my final stop. Looking forward to next year!
Haha, that impression of TOT at the beginning was actually pretty great! I love the Handmmer, it definitely turned out way more awesome than it had any right to 😂 I think the thing I love about this playlist the most is just seeing how excited everyone is when they unbox the gifts. You all have so much energy and enthusiasm and it bursts from the videos and makes for a very enjoyable and exciting watching experience. Plus you all are stupendously creative (a group of makers is creative, who'd a thunk?) and it's always an adventure seeing what everyone came up with.
Those builds are exquisite! That OG Stanley color is spot on and brings back memories of all of the ones that belonged to my dad that I broke or lost as a kid. The handmmer is pretty damn cool and useful anytime you need to put your fist down. Those are some stellar gifts!
Happy to see you shine! Thank you for the video and I hope to see more of your funny/crazy/entertaining projecys! You and your colleagues are fun to follow!
Absolutely FAN - TAS - TICK ! ! ! I love the whimsy of the whole idea. And kudos at trying to match that ubiquitous yellow-orange color of those classic plastic handle tools. That and the red nail polish. And I wish I had a Handmmer myself. A great idea! Great fun all around.
I found your channel last year from the Secret Santa videos, and it happened to be the last video of the series I watched that year. This year, yours is the first of the that I am watching!
Hot damn you are getting so confident and expressive and in your element with building stuff these days. Love to see it! Merry Christmas, excellent build 😁
Das ist wirklich Handarbeit, tolle Ideen und schöne Werkzeuge. Der Handhammer aus Metall wäre es gewesen, doch aus Gummi ist auch gut. Frohe Weihnachten.
One suggestion, Xyla, instead of hot-gluing the popsicle sticks, would be to get a clamp and stand, a la chemistry class for holding a burette. I suspect that would allow you to hold stuff at any height and pretty much any angle. And Merry Christmas, hope you have a wonderful holiday...
Happy Solstice! (I'm a firm believer in everyone just wishing folks the joy of whatever holiday is relevant to the speaker.) Also, next time your brain is misbehaving and telling you awful things, remember that you made a usable, good-looking box from *nothing* using only your intuition and estimation, in roughly an *hour*. You are good at doing things, and the tool box proves it.
O. M. G. love it! will 100% bring those tools to the job site. can't wait to get my hands on those hands! thanks XF!!
You said you'd be surprised with us! I'm glad I didn't wait for your follow up video and cheated so we really did get surprised together!
Fancy seeing you here
Just... No MATTER how much your wife asks, never let her borrow the handmmer, Tony!
You just had to spoil your surprise didn't you!
come here often?
A very hands-on approach to a project for sure!
You and breaking taps should be in on this. Then again you guys might go overboard. Adam the machinist would be a good fit too.
@@Nathan_Whaley-g8m When has going overboard, ever (relatively) been a problem? :p
@op4000exe Well when you bring relativity into it, I suppose it's never been a problem ever.
Gotta keep your finger on the pulse...
The second you go "my hands are down here" I immediately was : Hey this is a nod at this old tony!

We need Xyla's nail care series. Each one brings the question: is this about the metal kind you hammer on or the ones on the fingers? (toes?)
Agree love Kids Invent Stuff. They need way more viewers.
