I appreciated this song before I found out the meaning behind it. Completely different perspective now. It's even more incredible. RIP to the 19 Tuvaluan girls.
It's a song sung by a Tokelaun band about an incident that happened in Tuvalu. 19 girls lost their lives due to a fire that occurred in their dorms. But because it was a boys/girl school, to make sure they wouldn't sneak out at night they barred the windows, thus why they couldn't escape. Tragic event and you can definitely feel it through the song.
Native American passing through, but I can't describe how happy this movie makes me. I'm so glad the Islanders are finally being recognized and portrayed in movies more often, and it makes me glad to also consider Hawaiian islanders as part of America with me. Being indigenous to the mainland, I have first hand experience of what its like to be overlooked and ignored as though we don't exist. I truly can't explain how happy it makes me that you guys got a movie that wasn't white washed and twisted such as Pocahontas was, though you can correct me if I'm wrong. Much love ✌🏽💕
I am not Polynesian, but my partner and his family are and naturally our daughter shares Polynesian bloodline too. It is a honor to be bought into a world which is so full of culture and incredible beauty.
Jeon Jungkook This song is about 19 young woman's in Tuvalu who died in a fire at school, they tried to escape but all the doors we're locked, the fire was cause by a young lady with her candle under her blanket studying overnight and the candle fell over and burnt the whole building, very sad story 😭😭💓 happened in 2000
i don't know why but this song calls somethings inside my soul. i don't understand the language but it made me tear out because it is so beautiful. this movie makes me eager to visit Maui and Samoa and other islands and learn their about cultures and people.
So weird re-listening to a song from my childhood. You've come a long way Te Vaka, especially for Tokelau. How much more can I proud can I be to be Tokelauan. Thank you, Alofa atu x
Te Vaka, finally Disney found you, THEY DESERVE IT MORE THAN ANYBODY IN THIS WORLD. For as long I can remember, they were there and I'm old you guys. PROUD
Mark Sapigao its actually to represent, the 19 girls that died in a fire😢😢😢😢, then the producers of moana put it in the movie to make it look like it was meant for her(moana). 😄😄😄
the song is in the language called Tuvaluan. heres is the english translation of the song. its actually a song about the 19 girls that lost their lives in a school fire in the islands Tuvalu. Let the tears fall down My heart is filled with sorrow For we have lost Many loved ones Let the healing flow over me and wash this pain away For we have lost Many of our young women It¹s hard to understand That 19 lives were taken And along with it The future of a small nation Let the tears fall down My heart is filled with sorrow For we have lost Many loved ones
that's really sad but isn't this the soundtrack for when lil moana is guarding the lil turtle back to the sea? i feel like it doesn't suit the scene.... but the music is really amazing
Ella Amba In the movie they change up the words. The lyrics you hear on this track are the original version. Te Vaka switched some things for the Moana movie
When you think the song is happy ... but then you read the lyrics RIL Let the tears fall down My heart is filled with sorrow For we have lost Many loved ones Let the healing flow over me and wash this pain away For we have lost Many of our young women It¹s hard to understand That 19 lives were taken And along with it The future of a small nation Let the tears fall down My heart is filled with sorrow For we have lost Many loved ones
“Your eyes so full of wonder Your heart an innocent warrior There’s a task for you Our dearest one Let it flow over you This freedom you feel And your deep thoughts Our young girl You'll come to understand There's not much time left To save the future Of all our islands”
Those are the lyrics for the Moana song "Innocent Warrior", not the ones for this song "Loimata e Maligi". This one is about a fire that killed 19 young girls in a school in Tuvalu. The Moana version is based on this song, but the lyrics are not the same.
Now everyone will kno bout Tuvalu, bc im poly n its sad Idk know much bout Tuvalu. The language is very similar to Samoan. Im so proud that Moanas father is a samoan chief bc he has the full traditional samoan tattoo/pe'a. I like how they incorporate a mix a of otger poly cultures..luv dis song!
Yes the tokelauan version to "loimata e ma ligi" in MOANA is so beautiful too 😁😁😍 love it and am proud that the Polynesian culture is displayed to the world 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #PolyFresh 😁
The song in Moana is different to this one. In this song 'Loimata E Maligi' there are lyric changes to fit the movie. :) And the meaning to this song is extremely sad..
I was looking into this song because of the trailer, I found this video yesterday and I couldn't get out of my head the fact that they couldn't have possibly used a song with such a tragic meaning and put it on top of a very positive, bright looking scene just like that, unless Moana had a very tragic past. But now I just watched the trailer again and I realized the lyrics were not the same. I would love to find out the new lyrics because they sound beautiful. Just as much as the original ones, all due respect to them, I just hope these facts are addressed properly.
I highly doubt they'd put a song with lyrics meaning something tragic where they don't belong... It's Disney, they do their research... The music from the Lion King is also very fitting, even after reading the Swahili lyrics. I expect the same for this song
This song made me ball in theatre out of all the other songs and I didn't know why. But I knew through the sound and passion it meant something.Music is universal even though I didn't know the language. RIL
Thank you.... With this song, this can calm me down from freaking, panicking, and being stressed at memorizing, projects, and recitations, i love this song..
I had a Samoan friend (more like a sister to me) who introduced me to Te Vaka and poly music years and years ago. I remember when the fire happened and how devastating it was. The second I heard this song in theaters it instantly brought tears to my eyes. The scene and the song together are such a beautiful tribute. To this day it still tugs at my heart every time I hear it
People who don’t know although there’s a million comments about it I’ll keep it short - In Tuvalu there was a fire in the woman’s dorm, apparently they locked the entry/exit because of meet ups with their loved ones. This unfortunately trapped the women inside due to a candle that lit up the dorm, there are a few survivors but 19 girls lost their lives to the fire. The band ‘Te Vaka’ is typically known as a Tokelau band, but the leader is part Tuvaluan from his mum hence why he has a Tuvaluan song “Toku Matua” (My Mum) which is dedicated to his mum, so The band made a song for it.
Mata means Eye in Indonesian as well as many Austronesian languages. Man... I'm proud to be Austronesian :) especially after watching this movie I suddenly remembered an old but still famous song phrase in Indonesian telling about our ancestors: Nenek moyangku seorang pelaut (My ancestors were sea-farers) Gemar mengarung luas samudra (Love to sail vast oceans) Menerjang ombak tiada takut (Having no fear on crashing waves) Menempuh badai sudah biasa (Sailing through storms, it's been natural)
In case if anyone is wanting the English translation is for this the Moana version of this song, which btw was written in honor of 19 girls who died in a fire in Tuvalu in 2000 (which certainly makes it even more emotional), here it is: Your eyes so full of wonder Your heart an innocent warrior There's a task for you My dearest one Let it flow all over you This freedom you feel And your deep thoughts Our young girl Your eyes so full of wonder
This song is so beautifully sung and orchestrated, it made me cry. All the tracks I've listened to give me the 'feels'. By far, the best Disney movie IMO--great soundtrack, inspirational story, wonderfully cast, just spot on in aspects
This song is already on I*Tunes. I am so happy about that. This group has such wonderful songs. I can at least listen to this song until the official soundtrack for Moana comes out.
This song brought me to tears the first time I heard it when watching moana, it just touches my heart. Now that I heard its original and who and why it was writen for, I understand the tears. it's a beautiful way to honor the memory of those girls.
I'm full Samoan and I can barely speak it let alone understand, and people mock me for the way I do things because they are wrong instead of trying to help me they decide to laugh. Please just understand that I don't know the language fully and that my spelling is going to be wrong sometimes so please, help instead of mock me because it feels like crap to be mocked for how you write things in you native language.
Hey i know how you feel :) Don't be discouraged you not being able to fluently speak Samoan does not make you less Samoan than someone who does. They can never take away your genealogical/ancesteral roots. And all those who say that are probably full of themselves anyways.
I know that, but I wasn't talking about the lyrics. I know the lyrics are Tuvaluan, I can tell the differences between the languages but they are both equally beautiful.
Seriously the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Im from England and wish our culture played more non-English speaking music from around the world rather than the riff raff we listen too all the time.
I heard this song in Moana the first time and I had to look up the whole song bcus it just calms & soothes me so much & its soo healing. I have no idea what it was saying but I cry when i hear this song 💚✨️
Sheng Feliciano its a song abou 19 school girls who died in a fire in a boarding school.. Let the tears fall down.. My heart is filled with sorrow, for we have lost many loved ones. Let the healing flow over me and wash this pain away. For we have lost many of our young women. It's hard to understand that 19 lives were taken.. And along with it, the future of a small nation. Let the tears fall down.. My heart is filled with sorrow.. For we have lost many loved ones.
I swear this song calms me down all the time. It’s so beautiful. I legit wanna cry. It’s my favorite song, whenever I’m stressed I just listen. Her voice, the music, the children it’s just beautiful.
Guys (and girls), Moana is a movie that combines all the islanders. So please don't go saying that it's only your culture. The movie was made to show ALL island cultures. Just watch the movie and be proud that your island is included in something big, that your able to show the world what your culture is like. :)
here you go.

RIP to the 19 school girls killed in the fire that this song was written for.... wonder why it was used for this movie? I haven't see the movie so have no idea.
Yes this song and the one in Moana have different lyrics and meaning, the words for this song is somewhere in the comments but here is the one for Moana; Ou mata e matagi Ou loto mamaina toa Manatuatu Taku pelepele Pa mai to mafanafanaga Saolotoga tenei Manatunatu Ki tamafine Maua ai te lumanei Ki tamafine Ou mata e matagi Your eyes so full of wonder Your heart an innocent warrior There's a task for you My dearest one Let it flow over you This freedom you feel And your deep thoughts Our young girl Your eyes so full of wonder
This song is a Tuvaluan song, sung by a group called TeVaka, a Tokelaun/NewZealand band, in honor of the 19 lives that were lost in a boarding school in Tuvalu. A young girl was studying at night. She fell asleep and left her candle still lit. Because there are so many mosquitoes, they slept in mosquito nets which then unfortunately got caught on fire from the candle. The school was locked up and boarded for protection and to separate the boys and girls, preventing the girls from escaping their dorms. 18 young girls and 1 teacher died. R.I.L💜❤🕊
Loimata e maligi Let the tears fall down
Toku loto fanoanoa My heart is filled with sorrow
Ko galo atu For we have lost
A fakapelepele Many loved ones
Omai te fakamafanafanaga Let the healing flow over me
Solo te mae tenei and wash this pain away
Ko galo atu For we have lost
Na tamafine Many of our young women
Faigata fakamalamalama It¹s hard to understand
Tino gafulu ma te toko iva That 19 lives were taken

I had a Samoan friend (more like a sister to me) who introduced me to Te Vaka and poly music years and years ago. I remember when the fire happened and how devastating it was. In Tuvalu there was a fire in the woman’s dorm, apparently they locked the entry/exit because of meet ups with their loved ones.
Wow that was actually very accurate a koe se tino Tuvalu?
not many know that but Tokelau is next to Tuvalu...
Mata means Eye in Indonesian as well as many Austronesian languages. Man... I'm proud to be Austronesian :) especially after watching this movie I suddenly remembered an old but still famous song phrase in Indonesian telling about our ancestors:
Nenek moyangku seorang pelaut
(My ancestors were sea-farers)
Gemar mengarung luas samudra
(Love to sail vast oceans)
Menerjang ombak tiada takut
(Having no fear on crashing waves)
Menempuh badai sudah biasa
(Sailing through storms, it's been natural)
as you are a proud austronesian, I am a proud polynysian. we share blood from over 5 thousand years ago. even yet, we are connected to the ocean.

Beautiful song, and beautiful movie ❤️ emotional and funny and beautiful all in one.
Tbh, I cried when I heard this song because it reminds me of my Samoan Grandma singing to me
In Tongan, the words "Loimata e Maligi" is said to be "Lo'imata Ne Malingi" which I believe in English means "pouring tears."
finally a Polynesian princess💞😍
In case if anyone is wanting the English translation is for this the Moana version of this song, which btw was written in honor of 19 girls who died in a fire in Tuvalu in 2000 (which certainly makes it even more emotional), here it is:
Your eyes so full of wonder
Your heart an innocent warrior
There's a task for you
My dearest one
Let it flow all over you
This freedom you feel
And your deep thoughts
Our young girl
Your eyes so full of wonder

Don't care about what people think, do your best and stay yourself :) Greets from France :)
Thanks :)
+08kemitc yeah, thanks :). I spelt something and it must've been spelt wrong and then that person laughed at me.
I LOVE THE PEACE 😪
it puts you in a beautiful place and your soul feels happy
Seriously the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Im from England and wish our culture played more non-English speaking music from around the world rather than the riff raff we listen too all the time.
Respect 💯
Loved it as well as the movie, made me flipping cry.
this makes me miss my grandfather and my cat from years ago :.. (

Sheng Feliciano
its a song abou 19 school girls who died in a fire in a boarding school..
Cidi Huia EXACTLY!! SAD BUT BEAUTIFUL😭😭😭❤R.I.P LITTLE KIDS!!

DontLiveInDogma yass
Very beautiful song and it fit the innocent tone of the scene in Moana.
I swear this song calms me down all the time. It’s so beautiful. I legit wanna cry. It’s my favorite song, whenever I’m stressed I just listen. Her voice, the music, the children it’s just beautiful.
this song really highlights to me how similar austronesian languages sound. in a very vague manner, this reminds me of malagasy.
Guys (and girls), Moana is a movie that combines all the islanders. So please don't go saying that it's only your culture. The movie was made to show ALL island cultures. Just watch the movie and be proud that your island is included in something big, that your able to show the world what your culture is like. :)
Exactly😊

Many loved ones
Let the healing flow over me

@timothy donald ?
sympa la version wallis !
Yes this song and the one in Moana have different lyrics and meaning, the words for this song is somewhere in the comments but here is the one for Moana;
Ou mata e matagi
Ou loto mamaina toa
Manatuatu
Taku pelepele
Pa mai to mafanafanaga
Saolotoga tenei
Manatunatu
Ki tamafine
Maua ai te lumanei
Ki tamafine
Ou mata e matagi
Your eyes so full of wonder
Your heart an innocent warrior
There's a task for you
My dearest one
Let it flow over you
This freedom you feel
And your deep thoughts
Our young girl
Your eyes so full of wonder
This song is a Tuvaluan song, sung by a group called TeVaka, a Tokelaun/NewZealand band, in honor of the 19 lives that were lost in a boarding school in Tuvalu. A young girl was studying at night. She fell asleep and left her candle still lit. Because there are so many mosquitoes, they slept in mosquito nets which then unfortunately got caught on fire from the candle. The school was locked up and boarded for protection and to separate the boys and girls, preventing the girls from escaping their dorms. 18 young girls and 1 teacher died. R.I.L💜❤🕊
