I respect Wayne Brady for standing up for himself and setting his boundaries but I'm really glad he said that line because it was the funniest shit ever.
The duality is key. :) The stereotype of a misogynist black man is deeply uncomfortable for him, even if everybody knows it's fiction. But he committed to the line anyway, because the *entire point* of the sketch (in which Wayne SHOOTS Donnell Rawlings lol) was to clap back at Paul Mooney for *implying that Wayne Brady is too straight-laced/courteous to be Black.* (And what does that say about black men if that's true, Paul? 🤔) Sometimes in comedy, there's no choice but to "cross the line" in order to get your point across. Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a b*tch? 🤣
Apparently, Brady didn't want to say the famous line because of his strict upbringing and deeply held respect for his mother. How can you not like the guy?
I find it funnier that "Wayne Brady" is two of the whitest, white names Independent of one another...but Wayne Brady, a black man, is named "Wayne Brady".
That's what makes this Skit one of my favourites. It's a (Mirrored) play on his moral character as a person. Knowing that he really is a nice guy makes it all the funnier because everyone knows, it's just a joke.
I am so relieved that he actually said the line he was uncomfortable with saying. Because it is one of the most hilarious moments in Chappelle Show. I laughed for 5 minutes straight when I first heard that line. That whole sketch was hilarious but that line made it even funnier that's why to this day it's my favorite sketch from Chappelle Show. I still laugh to this day whenever I see it.
It's awesome seeing his discomfort knowing he still went through with it. It really shows his commitment to the script and the joke. He knew he was taking serious professional risks with this skit if it didn't come off right. Because he was such a pro about it the result was he actually solidified his popularity and credibility as an actor and comedian.
1:30 I think it’s cool that Chappelle is brainstorming and offering alternatives that can still land if Wayne Brady put his foot down on not saying the line. This really does work with most people: if you show that you’re open to working around their concerns, they’ll be more open to drop those concerns.
Someone needs to bring back the Chappelle show and just let him have free reign with his creative genius and his writers. One of the greatest sketch shows of all time.
I knew a girl who worked on the show. She said Dave was such a perfectionist and wore so many hats that he only slept like 3 hours a night. Going to Africa was largely because he was exhausted, but working any less and the show would not have been as good. No way could he put himself through that again.
It is the most brilliant sketch I have ever seen. A genius self-parody within a parody. How cool is Wayne Brady to literally have fun with his own perceived persona AND to basically appear on a show that had lampooned him just weeks prior? It was basically a wink and a nod from Brady through Dave Chappelle to the black community that he was much more 'down' than people might have thought. That's what makes the scene with the cop so hilarious...turning his real life persona into something much more dangerous was brilliant. Because NO ONE still thinks of Wayne Brady like that. So well done...the best of what is the funniest show I ever saw on television.
He is not "down" he is just a guy. The whole concept of being "down" has ruined the black community imo. Being square > Being down any day of the week. In the 50s getting good grades or being a working jazz player was something to aspire to and now look at us. The joke of the world.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot I get what you are saying but I just don't agree with the idea of "down". Any black person who isn't involved with their black community is a fraud and a sellout. They deserve what they get. being "down" is entirely different than being an active member of the community and working directly to uplift the people who are struggling while working with those who have "made it" to devise new strategies to help those who have not. David quit on this show for a reason. Maybe this is too militant for your taste.
@Proton1 I've seen Benny Hill. Funny. And comedy is subjective. You telling me that something is better...you must be white. Go eat your mayo sandwich and take a walk Chad.
I was at my cousin’s house first time seeing this skit. We were dying laughing hours after the show ended. We were waiting for re runs to come on so we could burn a recording of the episode on a vhs tape. Still have it too. Great times
What made this my favorite skit was that it was similar to Training Day in the sense that Denzel was mostly known for clean-cut roles before that. He won an oscar for his portrayal of Alonzo, and in this sketch Wayne Brady does one HELL of a acting job playing a thug-role. The part where he sings before killing the cop never gets old.
Wayne Brady earned major "cool kid points" for saying the pivotal line! I remember watching this skit for the first time and was shocked and laughing my butt off. It never gets old and kudos to Wayne Brady for being seriously epic! That skectch was hands done one of the funniest on the Dave Chappelle show!
I grew up enjoying Brady on Whose Line, then when the joke premiered on Chappelle it was kind of shocking for his character but that made it 10x funnier. Now seeing these outtakes where you can get a feel for his genuineness, it makes me like him even more. I also think "Wayne Brady makes Byrant Gumbel look like Malcom X" is one of the funniest roasts of all time.
Wayne is a comedy god on Whose Line Is It Anyway. Good on him for going all-in on the "choke a bitch" line. It was just perfect, and nobody would remotely think it was Wayne's true feelings lol. One of the greatest comedy sketches of all time.
And, as they say, "The rest is HISTORY"! Thanks, Wayne Brady, for breaking all the rules to make America (and the world) laugh and forget our problems. We are forever indebted to you.
I feel there was a group of us who truly loved Wayne Brady as kids, then as slightly older kids it made this one of the greatest sketches we'd ever see

Weird that the line he had reservations about ended up having one of the biggest reactions of the sketch.
Yeah that line cemented Brady as straight comedy
Thats not weird at all. Its causal even, id say. It got the big reaction and he didnt wanna say it BECAUSE it is so extreme.
It got the biggest reaction because the guy is so pure. No one expected that to come out of his mouth.
