- In mid-2004, billboards were constructed in Melbourne Australia that would lead to one large online mystery that plagued the internet for years. This involved a mysterious organization that had paid $10,000 for this billboard and was looking to recruit members in very unorthodox ways. @@DickDickstein @Forrest Swanson it seems to be a thesis in performance art, so not only would his teachers and opponents be somewhat versed in the concept of participatory culture and public art, but the "thesis" itself isn't as strictly defined as in other fields of study. His statement had to do with the drive in people to participate in a mysterious society. Market research 1. Doesn't seem to be the case, especially as he doesn't seem to be funded by any particular brand or market research org. 2. Is a very cynical theory.

It says this on the screen. He is exploring the boundaries of what constitutes art and who the author of an artwork is when the artwork is actually, in part, developed and created by the audience participating in the artists work, which is what happened in this case.
He is saying, is this art? Who created it? Why is it art if the audience creates it as much as the artist? Is a hoax art or not? Is art created using new multimedia technology as much art as any other type of art when it is not something obviously "art" (like a painting or sculpture for example.)
Personally, while I have reservations about making people do thing that are verging on illegal or even illegal for art, I find the rest of it to be fantastic, and very clever. It is art, as far as I am concerned, but it blurs the lines. It is not like looking at a painting in a gallery, which is a very passive art, it is an interactive artform, where the participants actions form part of the artwork itself, and the creation of things like the online communities and blogs by the participants are as much part of the artwork as anything the artist did.
Props to the guy, this is genius.
It reminds me of Andy Warhol in a way - a lot of his paintings he just came up with the design and made one, and then other people made the others. He made Brillo boxes, and even went so far as to ring Brillo and find out who their cardboard supplier was, and then used that exact same cardboard. Heck, he even called his studio "The Factory." So is it art if it is a Brillo box, the same design as a Brillo box, the same cardboard, but made by Warhol and sat in an art gallery?
This would be a brilliant thesis in pretty much any social science field, and it almost feels like a waste that it focuses on the artistic aspects. It is a social experiment with quantifiable results, that promoted interactions under strange rules between individuals who might otherwise have never met, and perpetuated itself. Tons of other aspects of this you could focus on depending on the field to have a superb thesis. How did those interactions go? How many people broke protocol? How many times did the cycle self-perpetuate? What were individual reactions to the experiment? What are the implications of people feeling like they are being manipulated and yet still engaging in explicitly risky behavior because they were instructed to? The answer to any of these would tell us something very novel about human behavior that would certainly quantify as independent research.
watching these types of videos has taught me to assume everything is an ARG until proven otherwise.

@@actionjaxon7570 ARG stands for alternate reality game. It is basically a sort of game/story where the creator uses several different mediums (images, videos, coordinates, cryptic messages, etc.) to make the game itself. When first discovered, these games seem like rabbit holes until it is proven that they are args. A good example is the "AshVlogs rabbit hole." Nexpo made a good video on it.

I myself was thinking this was one massive social experiment for the same reasons. It's always a great question to ask "Why?" and in this case, why would someone go to all these lengths to create something that for the participants, had no explicit payoff whatsoever throughout the entire journey, no money was given out or taken. On this scale, with this many people involved and my studies into psychology, this seemed to me to be a open/shut case for it being one large social experiment.

That opening bit, about feeling like people are staring and waiting for something made me think of Darren Brown. He convinced people he was orchestrating a massive hidden camera show and engineering coincidental events and asked people to record when they thought they had caught it. But he did nothing, and people still reported things. Basic psychological priming. I was ready for this to be a cult.

I mean, I haven't seen that specific Brown thing, but I'm aware of his work in pointing out how we can be manipulated.
I was a bit disappointed to learn that this experience wasn't actually genuine, but just "as imagined by the artist". I would've loved to hear about examples of confirmation bias by real people.

Brown, a mentalist, convinced people a hidden camera show with hidden actors would make things happen like manipulate small situations or coincidentally give them things or say something to them. There was no show. But people still reported when strangers talked to them or they felt watched or thought something had been arranged. They were psychologically primed to believe coincidences were intentional.

the thing that blows my mind about this is the fact that he created an arg that was almost entirely self sufficient, meaning he had essentially become a god in a sense. This man is/was extremely intelligent and charismatic, imagine what he could've done if he wasn't an artist/author.
@@I_Hate_RUclips_Handles Intelligent for sure, but I wouldn't necessarily call this charisma. Basically the subjects never met him personally. Based on this video they only get messages/tasks in written form. There was little to no effect of personal charm.
In reality just a bunch of extremely curious person mislead each other unknowingly, while 'fearing'/'adoring' a mysterious company they know about nearly nothing...
I rather use the word manipulative and cunning.

Sure, he pranked a bunch of people. But you gotta hand it to Robin, he sure made an interesting study that says a lot about human curiosity.
The meta-ness of it sure should have sold the "original contribution" aspect of the dissertation. Did they say what "field" this PhD was in? Art Theory? Theater? Psych? Did I just miss it?

The last line in the trailer for the documentary sums it up" why are we doing what we are doing"this is just a guess but since he's a performance artist maybe... the point of this whole "art piece" is to get everyday people to really think about what they're doing and why .

The PhD covers some interesting topics, particularly at the end with the 'interview'. He's the only person to ever discuss the ethics of running ARGs (or I guess we might call them Unfiction today) when you could be really messing with people in bad ways.

Technically, no I can't. I believe it is still covered under Copyright - Don't ask me how I found it at first I was in a mad data-harvesting binge for my own studies. I remember I used to trip over it everywhere but it seems harder to find these days. The title of the PhD is "Project Neurocam: An Investigation" by Robin Hely published in November 2012 for Monash University. I'm sure you can find a copy on your own somewhere - worst case you could ask the University for a copy?

What really blows my mind is how the idea that curiosity drives humans more than a financial bottom line especially in this instance. As you said there were no fiduciary benefits to collect yet people were driven, almost beyond their voluntary means, to continue performing these menial tasks.
This is quickly becoming a favorite channel of mine. I love that you cover stories that are more obscure and unheard of.

I usually hate perfomance art (and most "installations" are self-indulgent bollocks too), but this was clever. Of course, the whole thing is an ARG precursor, and there's incredible creativity and novelty in that genre...can't wait for Disney to buy in to it. /barf
@@Trollificusv2 PhD research projects usually get funding in some way or another, student loands, scholarships, sponsors etc (in the UK, post doctoral loans can be up to £25k). Possibly funded, possibly rich kid

So my takeaway from this, and I could be wrong since I've not read Hely's paper, is that some people would be willing to complete tasks and go to lengths clearly unreasonable (like going to an unknown location) just not to be "terminated" from the organisation's programme, inspite of not knowing what the programme is actually about. Quite the way to recruit personnel. The need to feel included. Curiosity captivates you, and then entraps you. Interesting

This made me reconsider what Randonautica could be. The intentions, the seemingly random places...I don't know if it's even remotely related, but seeing how deep these ARGs go, it just makes me wonder.

I have a Masters of Fine Art. Beyond the scale of the work (which ultimately comes down to budget) Neurocam is a fairly typical example of post-graduate thesis work. Honestly, the most impressive thing is that Hely got it passed his school's Ethics Board.
I mean, it isn't actively harmful, just weird, and weirdness shouldn't be unethical.

I think that part was also a clever and subtle reinforcement that while the whole thing was ominous and a bit scary, violence and conflict was not to be part of it.
I couldn’t imagine the university I attended green lighting a project like this.

I'm so happy that this is something other people do, and not just a result of me being the only shallow person alive. I don't fully shut off the video, but I can absolutely relate to feeling uncomfortable watching an old video due to its visual/audio quality, even if I would have accepted it in the past.
It's rare when a RUclipsr that's been around for years has a back catalog that remains entirely watchable. Even someone as prolific as Vsauce's early videos are... well, it took him a lot of time to hit his stride.
Barely Sociable is lightning in a bottle and I pray he's not gonna be one of those channels that vanishes a year from now.

I found a poster of Neurocam sometimes in or after 2018. It offered $25/h to volunteers for research into dream visualization. My city is a tech hub with a university and a paid medical volunteer clinic so it seemed perfectly normal. When I googled it years later most response was that it was a scam. I appreciate this video shedding light on a minor mystery for me.
Interesting experience on human curiosity and quite an adventure actually, really cool that the participants later on had to spread this movement to the initiates and so on!
What I think played a big part in the success of this was the wait (1 week), mixed with requiring actual hours of your time to commit you into this experiment and the intriguing mystery! Since your mind ran loops for 1 week between every assignment.
The writer doesn't mention that he brought someone along to take photos of him at the safe, yet there are photos over his shoulder, plus the 'hermetically sealed envelopes' are just put in zip-loc bags lol :P

Nah, makes sense - its not "scored 7/10", its "you had 7 of a possible 10 traits we look for in any combination".
Part of what makes this not totally unethical is that it is pretty open about it being manipulation. It is performance art in the same way stage magic is. People know they are being lied to and it is their curiousity that drives the whole project. It is really interesting given this that people completed the self perpetuating cycle multiple times anyways.

This is SO DAMN COOL!!!! It reminds me of Wreck this Journal in a way. The first thing about recording everything you do for a few hours and documenting it is totally a prompt I could see in Wreck this Journal. Wreck this Journal is all about exploration, creativity, getting out of your comfort zone, and doing things that feel crazy or stupid in the name of art. I would have loved being a part of something like this. This is amazing.

What doesn't make sense to me in the Neurocam procedures is that the hidden safe contained about a hundred envelopes, presumably for about a hundred recruits to be picked up from there. They were not instructed when to pick up their personal package, only that it needed to be done before a certain date. They would probably go there at their earliest convenient opportunity since they were already curious enough to get to this point in the first place. A hundred different people picking up a package from the same location would pose a potential risk of some of them running in to each other. Heck, if it was me, I would hang around near the safe for quite a while to see if anybody else would come pick up their envelope!
This man really wanted his PhD! I’d be pissed if I was one of his operatives but as an outsider I’ve got to respect his commitment to the whole charade.

I love these videos but they normally make me super anxious. I’m actually scared to watch a nexpo video because his voice and the tone of the video freaks me the fuck out.
